Dramatic fire destroys £4.5m Grade II-listed mansion in north London
A Grade II-listed 18th century mansion has been destroyed after a huge fire ripped through it overnight.
Seventy firefighters rushed to tackle the blaze at the £4.5m nine-bedroom Georgian home, known as Hollybush House, in Barnet, north London, at around 1am on Monday.
The building collapsed after the whole roof, as well as the first floor and ground floor, caught fire, the London Fire Brigade said.
The property was undergoing refurbishment after it was bought in 2020. There were no reports of any injuries while the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Ten fire engines were at the site on Monday morning, with firefighters still using water to put out the blaze as smoke billowed over the 2.2-acre site.
Hollybush House was built in the 1790 and sprawls over two acres of land including an attached cottage, according to planning documents.
The main building includes seven reception rooms and six offices, according to estate agents. It also has a pond and a large, heated swimming pool.
It also had a drawing room, library, kitchen, dining room, sitting room and art room, with an adjoining garage, estate agents added.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: 'Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled a fire at a house on Hadley Green Road in Barnet.
'The entire roof, as well as the first and ground floors of a detached house undergoing refurbishment were alight. The structure subsequently suffered a partial collapse.
'There are no reports of any injuries. One of the brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders was used at the scene as a water tower to tackle the fire from above.
'Control officers took the first of eight calls to the fire at 1.10am and mobilised crews from Southgate, Barnet, Finchley and surrounding fire stations to the scene.
'The fire was under control by 4.48am but crews remain on scene this morning damping down hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.'

A man accused of parking his luxury supercar in a disabled parking bay has defended himself with the ultimate 'clapback'. A Facebook page that regularly shares local news and updates in the Torquay area of Devon posted an image of a grey Lamborghini wonkily parked in what appeared to be a Blue Badge designated spot. In the background people could be seen walking around the car park, meanwhile various other cars were parked in allotted bays. Accompanying the photo was a caption that accused the motorist of 'depriving a disabled person of a space' with many adding to the backlash, including one person who claimed the driver didn't have the 'right to take other people's spaces'. 'Have Lamborghini so will park however and wherever I like, even if that means depriving a disabled person of a space' read the full caption. 'Just cause you own a car like that doesn't give you the right to take other people's spaces' exclaimed one person. 'We all pay for parking, whoever it is thinks he's above everyone else' they added. However a multitude of users empathised with the motorist, and pointed out that 'not all disabilities are visible'. 'Disabled people can drive lambos too' stated another. Elsewhere one user debated whether the parking bay could be used by families and said 'they [the motorist] might have their child with them'. Well an updated post certainly proved the 'haters' wrong as it showed an unknown man with a visible disability laying across the floor in front of the luxury sportscar. Tagged with the words 'a picture for all my fans', the image revealed the local to be a double amputee who had both his legs below the knee replaced with prosthetic limbs. In one hand the man displayed a document resembling a Blue Badge - the ultimate 'clapback' to the first post which suggested he wasn't within his rights to park there. A Blue Badge is a parking permit that lets disabled drivers and passengers park in designated disabled spaces. One commenter said the picture was the 'top five of all time'. 'I love this pic'. They wrote. 'I did ask if there was a blue badge. Almost didn't post but I'm kind of glad I did because this is a cracking pic, got to be top 5 of all time'. 'Absolute hero' commented another. 'Keep enjoying your car and winding up the self appointed parking police. People really do need to get a life'. Relating to the situation, one woman wrote: 'Love it. The amount of looks I get when I get out of my Sportage is unbelievable, with my blue badge... But I've gone past caring, especially now I've had a triple heart bypass'. 'You sir are a hero! People are too quick to judge these days' said another. Someone else wrote: 'Absolutely brilliant. Good on you for clapping back'. One person joked: 'Clearly just had his leg taken off just to get easy parking'. 'This made the news, and proven all the haters wrong, legendary' chimed another person. Meanwhile many users claimed they would use bays allocated for Blue Badge display holders whether they had a disability or not. While a multitude of users empathised with the motorist, others initially added to the backlash, including one person who claimed the driver didn't have the 'right to take other people's spaces' Blue Badge parking permits disabled drivers and passengers to park in designated disabled spaces. You automatically qualify for a blue badge if you are blind, receive a war pensioner's mobility supplement or the higher rate of the mobility component of the disability living allowance. All other applications are considered by local authorities on a case-by-case basis. One such reason that you have to qualify is if you have a permanent and severe disability which means you cannot walk or can only walk with severe difficulty. Generally children under the age of two are not eligible for a blue badge, as they are expected to use a pushchair at that age. But children over two may qualify for a blue badge if they have severe mobility problems. Certain children under the age of three may be eligible if they have a disability due to a medical condition and need to travel with bulky equipment, or be close to a vehicle for emergency medical treatment. Family members are allowed to use the blue badge as long as they are present with the disabled relative; using it without them present can result in a criminal conviction and a fine of more than £1,000. The laws for Blue Badge holders recently changed to include those with more hidden disabilities or disorders such as dementia, autism, stress, mental health disorders and anxiety.

Bennerley Viaduct visitor centre should open by autumn

Katherine Ryan faces fresh neighbour battle after husband Bobby's dream garden is ruined over the bank holiday
KATHERINE Ryan has opened up on drama with her new neighbour after her husband Bobby Kootstra's dream garden was left ruined. The comedienne, 41 - who has a background in urban planning - bought her swanky London mansion back in 2019. 6 6 6 She previously welcomed her third child during a home water birth at her pad in the English capital yet, despite the happy memories, issues with a host of neighbours have caused niggles. We previously reported how the stand-up had complained to the council in 2022 after her neighbours built a balcony overlooking her swimming pool. Now, Katherine has told how a different male neighbour on the other side of the fence caused issues over the recent Bank Holiday weekend. In her podcast, the Canadian described her outdoor space as "a beautiful garden that my husband takes such good pride in." Yet detailing the "big drama" to come, she told how their new neighbour had informed them he would be doing some gardening work ahead of their family trip to Costco. Her eldest daughter Violet, 15, stayed at home yet rung her parent to tell her "there is a giant tree in our garden." In the frantic call she told her: "The neighbours are chopping down trees, does Bobby want to see a photo?" Katherine then tells her: "I show Bobby the photo, a giant tree has fallen over and through our fence and is in the garden. "You can see many other trees were cut at the tree line." Katherine Ryan says she's planning £174k facelift at 41 as she reveals exactly when she'll get it done She told how it was a "big change" to their landscape and added: "Those trees have been around a long time, as someone with a planning background we are in a conservation area." She then reverted back to explaining her spouse's reaction, telling her Katherine's Telling Everybody Everything listeners: "Now we have got an entire tree in our f**king garden and Bobby is having a meltdown in the Costco. "Not angry just looking really sad, then he got quiet. I had to take the children away from the trolley." She then told how he had a chat with the neighbour when they got home, and arranged to have some more surveys done before any more trees were chopped down. Katherine added: "He loves nature and the garden and the shade those trees provided "He just takes a lot of pride in his garden "I don't think Bobby would chop down anything without telling a neighbour. "My concern is I have small children and dogs, if a giant tree is fell in our garden there are safe ways to do that." She added of her partner: "It just ruined the day, it's like his sports team had lost." The pair entered into a civil partnership in Denmark in 2019. She shares son Fred, three, and daughter Fenna, two, with her spouse - as well as Violet from a previous relationship - yet has spoken of her desire for a fourth child. 6 6
