As Mamata govt reinstates 74 castes in Bengal OBC list, why BJP says Hindus deprived

India Todaya day ago

On June 10, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee presented the annual report of the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes (WBCBC) for the financial year 2024-25 in the legislative assembly, where she defended her government's recent decision to expand the OBC (Other Backward Classes) list.Speaking from the floor of the House, Mamata emphatically denied allegations that her administration was using religion as a criterion for reservations, asserting that socio-economic backwardness alone determined eligibility.advertisementIn a significant move, the state cabinet, led by Mamata, had earlier cleared the inclusion of 76 additional castes to the OBC list. Of these, 74 had previously lost recognition due to a Calcutta High Court ruling, and have now been reinstated following due procedure. The two new additions—Sadgope and Nepali Brahmin—are being included for the first time.In a politically significant move, the state cabinet, led by Mamata, had a day earlier cleared the inclusion of 76 additional castes to the OBC list. Of these, 74 had previously lost recognition due to a Calcutta High Court ruling, and have now been reinstated following due procedure. The two new additions—Sadgope and Nepali Brahmin—are being included for the first time.
Importantly, of the 140 communities currently recommended by the commission for inclusion under OBC categories, 79 belong to Muslim communities and 61 to non-Muslim groups—highlighting that, in terms of sheer numerical representation, the majority of recognised OBC sub-castes in West Bengal remain Muslim.advertisementThis religious composition has become a flashpoint in the political discourse, with the Opposition BJP alleging that the OBC policy has been meddled with to appease Muslims. In fact, this was the point of contention that led to the cancellation of the previous OBC list.In her address, Mamata pushed back against what she called a 'baseless' campaign. 'A section is trying to spread the falsehood that our government is giving reservation on the basis of religion. This is completely untrue. The OBC list is not—and will not be—prepared on religious grounds,' she said. The WBCBC conducted fresh surveys following a May 2024 Calcutta High Court judgment, which struck down the inclusion of 109 castes in the OBC list, citing procedural lapses. These inclusions, made since 2010 under the previous Left Front government and continued under Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule, were invalidated as they did not meet judicial standards for evidence-based backwardness. The ruling was a significant setback to the state government's affirmative action framework.Mamata clarified that the state government has challenged the high court ruling in the Supreme Court and, with the apex court's permission, resumed the process of inclusion based on new data. 'The Supreme Court gave us three months to prepare a fresh list. The commission carried out field-level socio-economic surveys, and based on that, we compiled a revised list of 140 communities—49 in Category A (more backward) and 91 in Category B (less backward),' Mamata said.advertisementDetailing the ongoing work, Mamata said surveys were underway for another 50 communities. According to sources, among these 50, 41 are very small in terms of population size, seven are newly applying classes, and two are undergoing re-survey. The chief minister said the aim was to complete the process before the Supreme Court's deadline. She also emphasised the empirical and scientific nature of the methodology. 'The WBCBC has done a meticulous job. We categorised communities into OBC-A and OBC-B based on the depth of backwardness. The more deprived sections have been placed in Category A, which is entitled to 10 per cent reservation. Those relatively less backward are in Category B, which has 7 per cent reservation,' Mamata explained. The revalidation of OBC status, she added, is critical for restarting halted recruitment processes in various government departments and educational institutions. 'As soon as the list is finalised, we can move ahead with pending recruitments,' she told the legislative assembly. However, the Opposition, particularly the BJP, was quick to push back. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari attempted to respond to Mamata's statement, but assembly speaker Biman Banerjee adjourned the House before he could speak, prompting BJP legislators to erupt in protest.advertisement'The chief minister was unwilling to take questions from the Opposition. The ruling party essentially fled the House because they know Hindus are being deprived. We will continue our fight for justice,' Adhikari told the media outside the assembly.Accusing the state government of communalising the reservation process, he said: 'I challenge the chief minister to publish the full list of the newly added castes. Let people see for themselves how many are from Hindu backgrounds and how many are Muslim. The BJP will be a party to the case in the Supreme Court, which is scheduled for hearing on July 15, and we will defend the interests of Hindu backward communities.'The state government maintains that all documentation, data and evidence used in determining eligibility have been placed before the assembly. 'This process has followed all legal and procedural norms. Religion has no role here,' Mamata reiterated. The political stakes are high. With the 2026 assembly polls looming, the TMC's recalibration of OBC classifications and the BJP's sharp counteroffensive point to a deepening battle over identity, welfare and the arithmetic of electoral mobilisation. For now, the debate is likely to intensify both in the courtroom and on the campaign trail.advertisementWhile, there would still be questions from BJP lawmakers regarding the authenticity of the list—since the majority of the classes classified so far are still Muslims—the WBCBC claims to have followed due process. 'There is evidence that proves that all these Muslim communities live in poverty and are extremely backward,' a source in the government said.Subscribe to India Today Magazine

"Nuclear arsenal was ready; clandestine network was assembling them," Israeli envoy Reuven Azar underlines reason for Iran attack

New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): Israel on Friday launched pre-emptive strikes on Iran under Operation Rising Lion. The action was taken to negate Iran's attempts at assembling a nuclear weapon. Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar highlighted Iran's 'illicit military nuclear program,' and accused them of accumulating enriched uranium.' In an exclusive Interview with ANI, Azar said, 'In the last few months, they have sped up the pace of enriched uranium, and now they have enriched uranium for nine nuclear bombs. But what triggered this in the more immediate context is the fact that there was a clandestine group that had been working on actually assembling the nuclear weapon on a ballistic missile. So that would create a situation in which Israel could be attacked by nuclear ballistic missiles, thousands of them.' The envoy said that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has determined that Iran has breached the safeguards agreement and has been conducting illicit and undeclared nuclear activity. 'And we are a state just half the size of Haryana or the size of Mizoram. For us, this is something that we cannot bear. We have also seen that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has determined that Iran has breached the safeguards agreement and has been conducting illicit and undeclared nuclear activity outside of the scope of what they have been agreeing to abide by under the umbrella of the Non-Proliferation Treaty,' he said. Azar said that while Israel has no issue with Iran having nuclear power plants for electricity generation, the country cannot be allowed to enrich uranium itself. 'Well, we haven't at any time mentioned that Iran cannot have nuclear power plants for electricity. What we didn't want was for Iran to possess the ability to enrich uranium by itself, because that would be an element in the composition of a nuclear arsenal. You have to understand. You need three components to launch a nuclear attack. You need the missile, which is the vehicle. You need the fissile material, that is the stuff that you need to put in a bomb. And you need a nuclear warhead. So if they have developed the plans, and we have already exposed that with the nuclear information that we have seized. About pairing the warhead with the missile. That since 2003. Iran has been conducting activities to create a nuclear warhead. So if they already have the ballistic missiles and they have the fissile material and they are capable of producing fissile material, then they would have the potential to create a huge nuclear arsenal. And therefore, that fissile material has to be removed from Iran. And the only material that can be used is that which is being imported to create electricity. We haven't said that that's not possible,' he said. He also underscored that Israel's military response had come after prolonged restraint. 'I think that Israel has been acting very responsibly because we've been postponing this military action for a very long time. Iran has been given many, many chances to retract from this policy. They have been sanctioned, they've been negotiating with, we have seen many, many attempts by different countries in the world to try to divert Iran from this line of action. And the fact that we have reached this point is because it's an imminent moment that we couldn't continue living with. And therefore, we took action. I think people appreciate the degree of our restraint. And I can tell you that many countries in the Arab world feel as threatened by Israel as Israel, if not more, because, you know, what the Iranians are doing is very clear for many countries. Iran wants to take Jerusalem, but it's only a stop on the way to Mecca and Medina. This is what they want to do. They want to control the Islamic world. And they have been attacking other countries in the past. Look what happened more than four years ago in Saudi Arabia when they directly attacked the oil production of Saudi Arabia. So I think that Israel is supported. And people, even if they don't support, they understand why we are taking this action,' Azar added. Meanwhile, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, the Commander of the IRGC, and the Commander of Iran's Emergency Command were all eliminated in Israeli strikes across Iran carried out by more than 200 fighter jets. SC seeks Karnataka govt's response to plea over non-release of 'Thug Life' in State theatres

New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Friday sought the Karnataka government's response to a plea seeking protection from threats against the screening of Kamal Haasan's film 'Thug Life'. Considering the urgency of the matter, a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan issued notices to the Karnataka government, the State police, Raaj Kamal Films International Private Limited and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) seeking their responses to the plea. During the hearing, the counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted that no action has been taken by the state authorities in Karnataka despite violent threats being issued against linguistic minorities in the State. 'No FIR has been registered. They have joined hands with extremist elements', advocate A Velan stated. After hearing the matter, the Court sought the responses of the aforesaid authorities and listed the matter to be heard next week. On Monday, the top court had refused to urgently hear Reddy's plea and had asked the petitioner to approach the concerned High Court. Subsequently, the matter was listed before the top court to be heard today (Friday). During the hearing on Monday, counsel appearing for the petitioner stated that a law-and-order situation is arising in the State, as cinema halls are receiving threats from certain fringe elements. Further, the counsel had stated that threats are being issued that the theatres will be set on fire. Hence, theatres in the State sought protection from the top court. The issue arose over an alleged statement recently made by actor Kamal Hassan, which said 'Kannada was born out of Tamil'. As per the petitioners' plea, there is an effective ban on the CBFC-certified film Thug Life in Karnataka, which is caused by violent threats from private groups, and the state authorities have failed to take action in this regard. The plea argued that such inaction violates the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. This right applies not only to filmmakers but also to the public who want to view films. The top court will hear the matter next week. (ANI)

‘Communal group' trying to create disturbance, shoot-at-sight orders at night in Dhubri: Himanta

People protested in Dhubri town on Sunday after pieces of meat were found near a temple. Prohibitory orders were imposed in the town on Monday and it was withdrawn the next day. Guwahati, Jun 13 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that shoot-at-sight orders will be in force at night in Dhubri district, bordering Bangladesh, as a 'communal group' is trying to create disturbances which the government will not tolerate. 'The order for shoot-at-sight will be issued immediately after I reach Guwahati today and anybody coming out at night or throwing stones will be arrested,' he said. Rapid Action Force (RAF) and CRPF personnel will be deployed in the district and all criminals in Dhubri will be arrested, he said. 'All those who have taken law into their hands will be dealt with severely,' the chief minister said. The law and order situation in Dhubri has been challenging for the last one week, he added. Sarma said that on the day after the Bakrid festival on June 7, a cow's head was found in front of the Hanuman Temple in the district headquarters, following which both Hindus and Muslims appealed for peace and harmony. The next day, however, a cow's head was again kept in front of the temple and stones were thrown at night, Sarma added. A day before Bakrid, an organisation named 'Nabin Bangla' had put up 'provocative posters' highlighting their aim to include Dhubri in Bangladesh, Sarma said. 'A communal group has become active in Dhubri to create disturbances and after coming to know about it, I have come to Dhubri and there will be shoot-at-sight orders in force at night in the district,' he added. All criminals in Dhubri will be arrested and all those who have taken law into their hands will be dealt with severely, he added. Earlier during Bakrid, a section of people did consume beef but this time thousands of cattle have been brought from West Bengal and a 'new beef mafia' has emerged in Dhubri who procured thousands of animals just ahead of the festival, Sarma alleged. 'This has come to my knowledge and I have ordered an inquiry into this. I have directed the authorities to arrest who has started this cattle trade,' Sarma said. He said that next year, he himself will come to Dhubri on the day of Eid and stay the next day as well. 'We cannot allow a section of the community to create such disturbances. Our government will not tolerate this and allow Dhubri to go out of our hands,' Sarma asserted. He said that if required he would guard the Hanuman Mandir for the whole night. 'We are fully committed to ensure enforcement of law and order in the district and defeat all communal forces,' he added. PTI DG NN This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
