China Open: Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai crash out in first round

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — The hopes of national mixed doubles pair of Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie of reaching the final of China Open Badminton Championship were dashed in the 2025 edition when they crashed out in the first round in Changzhou today. The world number six was shown the way out by Indonesian pair, Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu in 21-18, 22-24, 15-21 over an hour. This is Soon Huat-Shevon's second defeat to the same pair, apart from failing to retain their runner-up position in the tournament in the 2024 edition. Meanwhile, the national professional men's doubles, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, had to forget their desire to defend the championship title when they were shocked by a defeat to the world's 40th ranked pair from South Korea, Kang Min Hyuk-Kim Dong Ju 15-21, 21-15, 21-17 in 56 minutes. It was a double defeat for the world's third-ranked pair, who also failed to defend their Japan Open title when they lost in the final last Sunday. The country's number one men's doubles, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, started the Super 1000 tournament campaign on the right foot when they defeated Danish pair, Rasmus Kjær-Frederik Søgaard 21-19, 21-15 in 41 minutes. Awaiting them in the second round are either French pair, Christo Popov-Toma Junior Popov or Kevin Lee-Ty Alexander Lindeman of Canada. — Bernama

Aaron-Wooi Yik advance, Soon Huat-Shevon out of China Open

National men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in action against Taiwan's Liu Kuang-heng-Yang Po-han in the second round match of Malaysian Masters at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil on Thursday. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik redeemed themselves from last week's early exit in Tokyo by clearing the first round of the China Open in Changzhou on Wednesday (July 23). Aaron-Wooi Yik, who crashed out early at the Japan Open, made no such mistake this time as they ousted Denmark's Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard 21-19, 21-15 in just 41 minutes at the Changzhou Olympic Sports Centre. The world No. 2 pair will now wait for the outcome of the match between French brothers Christo and Toma Junior Popov and Canada's Kevin Lee-Ty Alexander Lindeman to find out their second-round opponents on Thursday (July 24). Meanwhile, mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie were shown the exit after falling to Indonesia's Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Pasaribu. Despite coming in as last year's runners-up, Soon Huat-Shevon were unable to repeat their strong showing and went down 21-18, 22-24, 15-21.

Aaron-Wooi Yik snap early-exit streak with China Open win

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik finally returned to winning ways after successfully navigating through their opening hurdle at the China Open today. The Malaysian pair battled past Denmark's Rasmus Kjær-Frederik Sogaard 21-19, 21-15 -- the same duo who had ousted them in the opening round of last month's Indonesia Open - to end a frustrating run of back-to-back early exits. Aaron-Wooi Yik, who also suffered a shock defeat to compatriots Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi at the Japan Open last week, showed far greater composure this time to exact revenge and extend their head-to-head record against the Danes to 4-2 from six meetings. The victory is a much-needed boost for the 2022 world champions, who had been in red-hot form earlier this season -- reaching four consecutive finals between April and May, and winning three titles in the process: the Asia Championships, Thailand Open and Singapore Open. Aaron-Wooi Yik are now expected to face France's Popov brothers, Toma Junior and Christo, in the last 16 as they look to rediscover their rhythm and mount another deep run in this Super 1000 tournament.
