The New York Knicks made a big move on Tuesday, firing Tom Thibodeau as head coach despite making the conference finals this year for the first time since 2000.

Thibodeau was hired by the Knicks in 2020. He went 226-174 in the regular season and 24-23 in the postseason.
New York beat the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics to advance to the conference finals this year.
The Indiana Pacers defeated the Knicks in six games to advance to the NBA Finals.
'Our organization is singularly focused on winning a championship for our fans,' Knicks president Leon Rose said in a statement. 'This pursuit led us to the decision to inform Tom Thibodeau that we've decided to move in another direction.
"We can't thank Tom enough for pouring his heart and soul into each and every day of being the New York Knicks head coach."

According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the Knicks are interested in Jason Kidd and Ime Udoka.

Kidd coaches the Dallas Mavericks, while Udoka coaches the Houston Rockets.
Neither Kidd nor Udoka is likely to be available for New York.
'Two head coaches who are not currently available but said to interest the Knicks, according to league sources, are Dallas' Jason Kidd and Houston's Ime Udoka,' Stein wrote.
'One source with knowledge of the Rockets' thinking told The Stein Line categorically that permission to speak with Udoka would be rejected if the Knicks requested it. A similar response would be expected from the Mavericks, but a read on their position as conclusive as Houston's could not be immediately confirmed Tuesday night."

It will be fascinating to see who replaces Thibodeau, who has coached the Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves and Knicks. He has won two Coach of the Year Awards but has never coached a team to the NBA Finals.

There's a New No. 1 Team in College Football After Latest Poll Released

There's a New No. 1 Team in College Football After Latest Poll Released originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The college football season is weeks away from kicking off, and on Monday, the AP Poll officially released its preseason rankings. Although the now-defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes finished the 2024 season as the No. 1 team, they have already been bumped from the top spot. As revealed in the latest AP Poll rankings, which have been taking place since 1936, the 60 journalists who vote to decide the rankings ended up bumping the Buckeyes to the No. 3 team in the country. This paved the way for a team that Ohio State actually beat last season to supplant them from being the best team in college football. AP Poll Announces New No. 1 College Football Team Although the Buckeyes got the best of them in their College Football Playoff Semifinal matchup, the Texas Longhorns were tabbed as college football's newest No. 1 team. The Longhorns narrowly edged out Penn State in what the AP reported was the closest vote since 1998. In addition to being atop the AP Poll, the Longhorns were also tabbed as the No. 1 team in the Coaches Poll this past week. Why Texas is the No. 1 Team in College Football Despite having a program record 12 players drafted during the 2025 NFL Draft, the Longhorns have been stockpiling on talent over the past few years. Not only is former No. 1 overall recruit, Arch Manning, taking over at quarterback, but he is also joined by a roster flooded with blue-chip recruits. The Longhorns have had a top-six class in each of the past four years, with the 2025 class coming in as the No. 1 class in the country. 2025: No. 1 Class 2024: No. 6 Class 2023: No. 3 Class 2022: No. 5 Class The Longhorns are also coming off back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances, making it to the semifinal round in each of the past two seasons. They also have the luxury of returning 61% of their production on defense from a season ago, indicating they have a chance to field yet another dominant unit. While it'll come down to more than just one player, many believed Manning could have led them to a title last season instead of Ewers, but now that he is at the helm, he will have the chance to do just that. Why Ohio State Isn't the No. 1 Team in College Football Similar to Texas, the Buckeyes sent a ton of players to the NFL, tying a program record with 14. However, while Ohio State ranks higher in returning production at No. 101 to Texas' 103, the biggest question surrounding the Buckeyes is their quarterback situation. With Will Howard off to the NFL, Ryan Day is choosing between redshirt freshman Julian Sayin and redshirt sophomore Lincoln Kienholz. Unlike Manning who started two games and also had a significant role down the stretch for Texas, neither Sayin and Kienholz played any critical snaps last season. Kienholz hasn't attempted a pass since 2023, while Sayin attempted just 12 in mop-up duty last season. Week 1 Clash Between Texas and Ohio State The No. 1 Longhorns will have to defend their ranking quickly into the season as they'll head to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes in Week 1. Both ESPN's "College GameDay," and Fox's "Big Noon Kickoff" will be in attendance for the No. 1 vs. No. 3 matchup. The game itself will kick off at 12:00 p.m. ET and air on story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

Stephen A. Smith says he and LeBron James have ‘no relationship' after bitter feud

Things did not end on a good note with Stephen A. Smith and LeBron James. During an appearance on former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas' 'Gil's Arena' podcast Friday, Smith said that he has zero contact with James and does not have any interest in ever speaking to him again. 'There's no situation and there's no relationship,' Smith said. 'He doesn't like me, and I don't like him.' Advertisement 3 Stephen A. NBAE via Getty Images Smith's comments stem from his feud with the 21-time All-Star earlier this year, when the two threw jabs at each other during various appearances on ESPN, which ultimately led to an in-person confrontation during a game in March. The ESPN sports personality added that other things happened between him and James 'behind the scenes' that the public does not know about. Advertisement 'All I would say is people don't know the things that have happened behind the scenes,' Smith said. 'Things that have been said, who they've been said to. The kind of things that have been engaged in in an effort to hurt me, along with contemporaries and others.' Smith also mentioned how he did not appreciate how James came at him on 'The Pat McAfee Show,' which airs directly after 'First Take' on ESPN. 3 Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James arguing with the ref in the second half of a game against the Knicks. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post 'There's a lot of s–t that I don't say. And there's a reason that I feel the way that I do. And the last straw was him approaching me and turning the Bronny thing into something about me attacking somebody's family, when it was him I was talking about. Not Bronny. Advertisement 'And then to go on 'The Pat McAfee Show,' which comes directly on after my show. On the channel that I work on. To insult me. Now, people can get into all kind of components that go into it and all that other stuff. I have nothing to say.' 3 Stephen A. Advertisement 'I'm never going to denigrate any employer, any partner, or myself by getting into anything excessively, unnecessarily, when it comes to him or anybody else,' Smith said. 'I'm going to do my job. I'm going to cover the game of basketball. 'But if I never, ever speak to him again in life, that will be OK. And I'm good with it.'

Cardinals Make Brendan Donovan Decision After Rockies Game

Cardinals Make Brendan Donovan Decision After Rockies Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The St. Louis Cardinals have unexpectedly surged recently by taking crucial series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs, two of the National League's top teams. St. Louis inserted itself back into the NL wild-card race. It is three games out of a playoff spot despite playing without veteran team leaders Nolan Arenado and Brendan Donovan. Notably, Donovan played during both series but not every day. He has been held out of the starting lineup for the last three games while dealing with a left groin issue. The 28-year-old utility man has been a bright spot this year due to his offensive production at the top of the Cardinals' lineup. Over 108 games, Donovan is batting .280 with a .756 OPS, nine home runs, and 45 RBIs. Brendan Donovan Returns to Cardinals Lineup Despite not starting Monday's series opener against the Colorado Rockies, Donovan came off the bench in the bottom of the eighth inning and delivered a clutch two-run double that gave St. Louis the lead and, ultimately, a 3–2 win. Manager Oli Marmol decided to put Donovan back into the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rockies. He was batting leadoff and playing second base. Brendan Donovan's All-Star Season Anchoring Cardinals' Wild Card Push This comes as timely news for St. Louis, who would capture their third straight series win and third straight win overall if they can take down Colorado again on Tuesday. Donovan earned his first All-Star selection this year after an excellent first half and was the Cardinals' lone representative. With St. Louis committing to a youth movement, Donovan's name appeared in trade rumors, but the organization chose to hold on to him for at least the remainder of the season. He remains under team control for two more seasons and is not eligible for unrestricted free agency until 2028. Donovan made his MLB debut for St. Louis in 2022. He finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting and earned his first Gold Glove award that season. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 12, 2025, where it first appeared.
