I was a big orca fan – but their skincare regime is giving me the ick
But new research is giving me pause. Now orcas in the Salish Sea off the coast of Washington state have been filmed picking kelp stalks and 'massaging' each other with them. In sightings of this behaviour, reported and dubbed 'allokelping' by the Center for Whale Research, 'the two whales then manoeuvre to keep the kelp between them while rolling it across their bodies … During contact, whales roll and twist their bodies, often adopting an exaggerated S-shaped posture.'
Whether this weirdly acrobatic seaweed exfoliation is more about skincare or social bonding is unclear, but it's fascinating. It's also, however, off-putting. There's a nauseating 'mud-daubed couples' cute spa selfie' or 'wearing matching thong swimwear to give each other a scrub at the mixed hammam session' vibe to this kelp massage business. It seems out of character for my orca heroines: this is the kind of performative sensuality I can imagine dolphins indulging in (don't get me started on dolphins).
I'm choosing, however, to have faith. Hopefully 'allokelping' will be revealed to be a creative part of a greater orca plan – perhaps to destroy humanity by giving us a catastrophic inter-species ick? I can't become one, but I remain, as ever, ready to accept my orca overladies.

Caitlin Clark reveals major concern for Taylor Swift's New Heights special appearance
Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark will be sat in front of her computer like many Americans on Wednesday night, dialed in to watch Taylor Swift 's appearance on 'New Heights'. The podcast appearance for the 14-time Grammy winner alongside boyfriend Travis Kelce, and his older brother Jason Kelce, will see Swift show the album cover for 'The Life of a Showgirl' and likely give a huge glimpse into the relationship of the 'Anti-Hero' singer and Chiefs tight end. The most anticipated episode in 'New Heights' history will stream starting at 7 p.m. Eastern, with Clark clearly interested, but also revealing a concern that the live broadcast may not go as planned. 'Are we sure YouTube isn't going to crash tonight?' Clark said on X. Her question quickly elicited a response from the official New Heights account - 'See you in the live chat!' Clark is friends with both Swift and the Kelce brothers and beat her 'Karma' performer mate to being a guest on New Heights back in January. Her appearance on New Heights came a few weeks before she joined Swift in a luxury suite in Kansas City for the Chiefs playoff game against the Houston Texans. Clark's excitement to see Swift and Kelce interact on his podcast was already evident, as she shared the preview clip for the episode on her Instagram story. The Fever guard also commented on the same video, 'AHHHHHHH!!!!!! LFGGGGGG'. Clark and Kelce attended one night of the 'Eras Tour' together at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, with the Iowa alumnus going to three shows on Swift's stadium tour. The one night Clark did not attend Swift's three-show stay in Indianapolis, she admitted on New Heights to looking to the home of the Colts to try and get a glimpse of the concert from her downtown residence. YouTube has more than 120million daily users, making its website likely ready for the barrage of Swifties and NFL fans eagerly anticipating the episode.

Don't be fooled into microbladed brows or lip blush – I too was sold a lie but I'm still getting laser 9 years on
WAKING up with perfectly sculpted brows and a rosy lip tint - is what most people want after getting microbladed brows and lip blush. But for one beauty fan, this wasn't the case. The TikToker, who is known as ' mskittenheels ', has shared her story online and it's racked up over 218.2k views in just a few days. Back in 2016, she was sold on the idea of getting microblading, which is a type of cosmetic tattoo where a small blade is used to create tiny, hair-like strokes on your eyebrows, along with a lip blush. But she was told that it would fade away in around 18 months. But fast forward nine years to 2025, "they still haven't gone.' While the makeup did fade from its original "thin and brightness" she loved, the beauty fan revealed that it just didn't disappear. The lip blush, in particular, bled over her natural lip line as her skin softened with age, leaving her with a look she never wanted. But now she is trying to get rid of it, and now she is in the middle of a painful removal process, using saline for her lips and laser for her brows, with several more sessions to go. She wants everyone to know: "It's so much more painful to get rid of it than it is to have it done." "Don't be fooled," she writes in the caption section. She was told it was semi-permanent, but she realised it's just "a tattoo on your face." I tried the viral '53 method' to banish my 'chins' without going under the knife and the results were astonishing But she explains that her biggest takeaway is microblading and lip blush aren't temporary, they're permanent, and getting rid of them is a long and painful journey. One wrote: 'When I heard about these 10 years ago, I knew exactly how they would look within a few years.' To which she replied: 'I wish I had that foresight. I'm really regretting mine.' A second added: 'Don't forget the dreaded upper and lower eye liner that looks like eye shadow now.' 2 To which the TikToker replied: 'I'm so glad I didn't have that (I was too nervous about the pain around my eyes) but yes I've seen that on other people and it's turned a blue colour.' Someone else asked: 'I really want my microblading removed but worried about how much it'll cost and how many sessions I'll need. How much did your session cost?' And the TikToker replied: 'My original session was nine years ago and it cost about £240 at the time and then £80 for the top up a few weeks later. 'Honestly I wouldn't recommend it after all the pain I'm going through to get them removed but others have told me theirs have come out fabulous so I really think it depends on who you go to and the technique used.' Top 3 beauty products every woman should be using Hayley Walker, Beauty Expert at Justmylook shared the holy-grail products every woman needs to be using. A cleanser, SPF, and hair oil are must-haves within beauty routines. A cleanser is crucial for healthy skin as it removes dirt, oil, and other impurities for flawless skin. This skincare step not only cleanses the face and removes dirt, but also prevents breakouts and premature skin ageing, helping you maintain a healthy, youthful, and blemish-free complexion. The Aveeno Face Calm+ Restore Nourishing Oat Cleanser is a go-to of mine due to its gentle formula that soothes and restores the skin's appearance and texture. SPF is non-negotiable and should be in everyone's daily skincare routine. Even on cooler, cloudier days, our skin is exposed to the sun's UV rays which can be harmful to unprotected skin and even lead to damage. These damages include sunburn, pigmentation changes, and wrinkles which can impact the skin's texture and appearance. In some cases, prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause skin cancer. Applying SPF daily prevents these damages and protects the skin from harmful rays. I recommend the Beauty Of Joseon Rice & Prebiotic Sunscreen PA++++ SPF50+ for its lightweight, non-clumping texture that absorbs quickly for a natural finish and maximum protection. Hair oil has many benefits and should be regularly used. This treatment can strengthen and protect the hair from external stressors while improving its appearance and shine. Regularly applying hair oil can also reduce breakage and even encourage hair growth for longer, fuller locks. Hair oils also target the scalp, reducing dandruff and improving its health through exfoliation. I recommend using this deeply nourishing treatment a couple of times a week or more depending on the hair's moisture levels. The Hair Syrup Rapunzel Pre-Wash Oil Treatment is a nutrient-rich treatment that revitalises strands to promote a happy scalp and healthy-looking locks. Apply the syrup throughout damp hair before washing; massage from root to tip and allow the formula to penetrate strands before rinsing and styling.

Trump to host Kennedy Center Honors event as he expands his reach in Washington
WASHINGTON, Aug 13 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he will host this year's Kennedy Center Honors ceremony after announcing a lineup of honorees he approved as part of his effort to remake cultural institutions he has deemed too liberal. Trump, who installed himself as chairman of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in February, tapped country singer George Strait, action movie star Sylvester Stallone and rock band KISS for one of the highest accolades in American culture. "I Will Survive" singer Gloria Gaynor and English stage actor Michael Crawford, who originated the lead role in musical "The Phantom of the Opera," will also receive the honor meant for lifetime achievements in the performing arts. Trump said he rejected some candidates he considered "too woke," invoking a term sometimes used as a pejorative for anyone who appears politically left-leaning on race, gender and sexuality. Since returning to power in January, Trump has weighed in on issues big and small as he seeks to put his stamp on American culture and institutions to align them closer with his preferences. The Republican president, a former reality television star, said he reluctantly agreed to host the Kennedy Center Honors, which will air on CBS on December 7. "I didn't want to do it. OK?" Trump said. "They're going to say, 'he insisted.' I did not insist. But I think it will be quite successful." In the past, honorees were approved by an executive committee of the Kennedy Center's board of trustees, and in recent years the ceremony was hosted by an actor or comedian. Previous recipients have included Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Elton John. Stallone, the star of the "Rocky" boxing classic movie series and a three-time Oscar nominee, supported Trump's campaign for president and called him "the second George Washington." Trump appointed Stallone as one of three "special ambassadors" to Hollywood in January. The president also touted a renovation of the Kennedy Center, saying it was part of his effort to improve the nation's capital by taking over the police force and redoing Washington, D.C.'s roads and parks. Trump, a real estate investor who has also undertaken renovations at the White House, noted the marble walls and columns of the Kennedy Center grand foyer - where he unveiled this year's honorees - and lauded what he called the good "bones" of the arts center. "With a little fix up and other work we can make it unbelievable," he said. "These columns - when you see them the next time, they'll be magnificent." No details were immediately available about the work planned, but Trump said it would involve replacing all the seats in the venue's performance spaces, tapping more than $200 million in funds approved by Congress. Trump did not attend events at the Kennedy Center during his first term but has taken a keen interest in it during his second, vowing to overhaul an institution he and his supporters view as too liberal. Trump in February appointed his former ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, to lead the institution. In June, Trump visited the Kennedy Center for a performance of "Les Miserables," where he and his wife were met with boos and cheers. Republican Representative Bob Onder in July introduced a bill that would rename the modernist building the Donald J. Trump Center for the Performing Arts.
