Merab Dvalishvili a lock for 2025 Fighter of the Year? UFC analyst explains why he isn't
Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) is currently one of the frontrunners for 2025 Fighter of the Year after title defenses over Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC 311 in January and a finish of Sean O'Malley at UFC 316 in June.
Dvalishvili won the "Best UFC Fighter" at the most recent ESPYs last month, but Sonnen isn't ready to give him the Fighter of the Year award just yet.
"Fighter of the Year is going to be very tough," Sonnen told MMA Junkie. "It's very tough. Merab has done a very good job, but to get in front of Ilia (Topuria)? There's a buzz around Ilia that's almost unlike anything I ever felt. (Khamzat) Chimaev is going to be of interest. Should Alex Pereira come back and get it over (Magomed) Ankalaev. No, Merab doesn't have it locked up. A lot of that list comes down to popularity, which Merab has now.
"That dude is a star. I was at International Fight Week. The mobs and the crowd, they mobbed everyone through there. Dana (White) himself got more, but for active fighters, the crowd and the interest, Merab could not move around. He is over. He is very popular, and people are going to vote for him. But no, activity alone, no, it will not get you Fighter of the Year."
Dvalishvili, who is currently scheduled to defend his belt against Cory Sandhagen (18-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) in the UFC 320 co-main event on Oct. 4 in Las Vegas, has plans of squeezing one more title defense before the end of the year.
"That's very impressive (if he can get a fourth title defense in 2025)," Sonnen said. "Those stats do matter. Any time you're setting history, it moves you to the front of the list. Merab is a wonderful person. That's a nice man behind all this. One thing that takes fighters off their perch quickly is when they start believing what's being said about them. They go to practice a little less. You don't meet better people as you become bigger and better in life. You meet a higher quality scumbag. ... It doesn't seem like Merab is falling for any of that. He's in Las Vegas, which is a very difficult place to not meet a lot of scumbags. He seems very focused. He seems to know who he is. He seems to be still be hungry. I think he deserves credit for that. I think one thing that would help Merab is if people got to know him more.
"He really is a kind gentleman. You can't say that about a lot of fighters. Most of them are scumbags, too. He's in a different category. I only bring that up because of his popularity and where it could go. If people simply get to know him, if he finds a way to get his message out, he comes across what he is, which is very nice, but he's so nice that people think it's an act. But it's not. So if he does a little bit more time, I would love to see Merab coach 'The Ultimate Fighter.' ... I think that kind of exposure where people got him in the living room every day, I think Merab has the potential to be the top draw in the sport. That's a big claim for a 135 pounder. But O'Malley had it. It can definitely be done."

UFC on ESPN 72 books late addition on days' notice
A late addition has been tacked on to the bottom of Saturday's UFC event in Las Vegas. Opening the UFC on ESPN 72 prelims at the UFC Apex will be a clash between Cody Brundage and Eric McConico, the promotion recently announced. Although both fighters typically compete at middleweight, the bout is scheduled for three rounds in the light heavyweight division, likely do to the bout's short-notice nature. Brundage (11-6-1 MMA, 5-5-1 UFC) has had wildly mixed results thus far in his UFC tenure. In his past four appearances, Brundage has registered one loss, one no contest, one win, and one draw. The draw was recently made official by Georgia after Brundage successfully appealed his technical decision loss to Mansur-Abdul Malik. McConico (9-3-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) made his debut on short notice in February and was knocked out in Round 2 by Nursulton Ruziboev. Artem Lobov: Conor McGregor was in 'party mindset' before Khabib fight, hardly trained
Artem Lobov wishes Conor McGregor took his fight preparation for Khabib Nurmagomedov more seriously. McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) was submitted by Nurmagomedov in the fourth round of their lightweight title fight at UFC 229 in October 2018, marking the highest-selling pay-per-view in the promotion's history. McGregor's fight against Nurmagomedov came after he made his biggest-career paycheck against Floyd Mayweather in boxing. Prior to the Nurmagomedov fight, McGregor's most recent MMA fight was arguably the greatest performance of his career when he dominated and stopped Eddie Alvarez to become the UFC's first dual-champion. Lobov thinks that mindset of McGregor could have posed problems for Nurmagomedov (29-0 MMA, 13-0 UFC). "I would love to see him come back, because I feel that if he was at 100 percent, we would be able to bring Khabib back, as well," Lobov said on "The Ariel Helwani Show." "I think Khabib would come back for that fight if Conor was 100 percent and fit and making real moves, making real fights. He would just need one fight, knock the guy out, and then the whole world will be talking to Khabib and getting him to come back. I know that fight bothers Conor because he didn't train at all for that fight. "Twice a week he was training for Khabib. I tried to get him to Vegas and said to him, 'We have to do it, come on, brother.' And he said, 'No, f*ck off.' He just didn't want to do it. He was in the wrong mindset. He was in the party mindset. He was training twice a week, and that's it. So when I saw the fight, I was like, 'Oh my God, if only you trained four times a week, you probably would've beaten him.' But imagine him with a full camp, the Conor that fought Alvarez. Imagine that Conor fighting Khabib. That's what I want to see." Lobov and McGregor went from best friends and main training partners to now battling each in an ongoing legal battle over McGregor's Proper Twelve whiskey brand. Lobov announced that he'll be fighting Nurmagomedov's training partner, Zubaira Tukhugov, at a PFL event on Oct. 3 in Dubai.

Nassourdine Imavov predicts Khamzat Chimaev finishes Dricus Du Plessis in first two rounds
Nassourdine Imavov sees Khamzat Chimaev's early onslaught getting to Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 319. Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) defends his middleweight title against undefeated Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the Aug. 16 main event from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). Most observers have broken down the title fight in the same way: an early Chimaev finish or Du Plessis outlasting him. The experts have leaned toward the latter but not Imavov. "In my mind, Khamzat will finish the fight in the first two rounds," Imavov told MMA Junkie through an interpreter. "That's what I have in my mind, but of course I understand people thinking that the longer it goes, the more it can go in favor of DDP because of his cardio, but also his way of fighting that is very weird, very strange." Imavov (16-4 MMA, 8-2 UFC) takes on Caio Borralho (17-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) in the UFC Fight Night 258 main event on Sept. 6 from Accor Arena in Paris. Imavov thinks there's no doubt he should be next in line for a title shot if he notches his fifth win in a row and was even disrespected to be asked such a question. "You know what I've done.
