Mum horrified as racist on Scot street tells her 'go back to your own country'
The 40-year-old mother of two claims she was racially abused close to her home in Edinburgh.
A Mexican mum has been left shaken after she claimed she was racially abused by a man in a Hibs top in Edinburgh.
Rocio Martinez, 40, was returning home from a rehearsal when the incident took place close to her Abbeyhill home. The mum-of-two, originally from Mexico City but currently living in the capital with her young family, looked on as a man allegedly acted extremely aggressively while on the phone in a residential area, reports Edinburgh Live.
She describes the male as being around 5ft7 to 5ft9 with short brown hair and a beard, as well as heavy eyebrows and wearing black jogging bottoms with a Hibs shirt.
Rocio, who is currently studying an Msc in Data Engineering in the capital, unfortunately caught the gaze and rage of the man who allegedly hurled a tirade of abuse in her direction. She was particularly upset when the man is claimed to have said 'go back to your own country.'
The incident took place on Saturday May 17 at around 6pm.
'It started at the top of Waverley Place and Regent Place, at the steps, kind of next to the Artisan pub,' she said. 'I was walking down the steps to go home, and I heard someone on the phone being quite aggressive and loud to whoever they were talking to, they were swearing a lot.
'I looked back and saw it was a man, and I thought to myself, 'gosh this man is angry!' And then this street has a lot of children, including my own who were close by.
'At the time I just hoped it didn't escalate. But I guess he thought I was being nosey looking over, which was enough for him to shift his anger to me.
'He started by shouting 'what are you looking at?' But I said nothing, although I did give him another look of: jeeeez!!
'I kept walking, he then started to follow me and started yelling 'f**k you! F*****g whatever whatever!! C**t!, mind your own f*****g business.' At first, I told him calmly but firmly to stop.
'I said do not talk to me like that. But he kept going and he kept walking next to me shouting all these horrible things, calling me a b***h.
'At one point he started getting too close into my personal space and making chesty movements, almost like a gorilla. I worried he might punch me.
'I don't remember when, but I did say f**k you back but he kept going on and on, walking beside me as I walked back home. Then he told me to 'go back to your country.''
It was at this stage Rocio threatened to call the police and became embroiled in a verbal back and forth with the man. Although she never followed through with her threat to involve officers, she believes this deterred the man from escalating the situation.
However she claimed several of her neighbours checked in on her after the incident took place.
'I did try to defend myself by insulting him back but he was so vicious,' she added. 'It caught me completely by surprise and led to me speaking back in a way I do not normally.
'I was really shocked that this man would talk and behave like that to a stranger. He was acting like a child, or even an animal.
'Even his physical movements were just so aggressive, he was full of anger. I felt shocked, angry, scared and then hurt and sad that someone would tell me to go back to my country just because I look different.
'I have called Scotland my home for the last 11 years and it really hurts to be told to go back to my country. It was all really upsetting and hurtful.
'He thought he could get away with talking to me like that cause I am a brown woman. He would have probably attacked anyone, but he would have also thought about it twice if I were a muscular white man.
'I do not deserve to be intimidated and harassed by anyone. It is also scary to think that this happened so close to my home.
'It has kept me from sleeping well the last couple of nights. It is just awful to be verbally attacked.
'I recently married my husband who I met here in Edinburgh. This country has really given me a lot of happiness and a chance to be my true self.
'So this attack was really hurtful. Hopefully I won't see his face again and I can put this behind me. He needs help if anything, because his behaviour is irrational and dangerous, probably to himself and others.'

Chef wins £20,000 payout after boss 'ranted about unreliable Mexicans'
The former head chef of a gastropub has been awarded £20,000 after his boss allegedly threatened to get him deported and made comments about 'unreliable Mexicans'. Cesar Omar Perez Vargas, who is of Mexican origin, walked out of the Pot Kiln in Thatcham, Berkshire, after things 'came to a head' during a busy shift in August 2022. A tribunal heard the kitchen had recently gone from four chefs to two and he was told to serve 60 diners one day after agreeing to cook for no more than 45. He told owner Francis Rockcliff the workload was 'unreasonable' and he 'could not bear the pressure anymore', walking out after Mr Rockcliff dismissed his concerns. Mr Perez Vargas said the owner followed him out of the premises and told him: 'I knew that you Mexicans were not reliable people. I will call the Home Office and make sure that they send you back to the country that you belong.' The chef, who has a husband, also claimed Mr Rockcliff threatened to tell officials he had been 'sexually harassing all the male staff'. Mr Rockcliff returned to the restaurant to see out the shift but later drove to Mr Perez Vargas' home to collect keys for the restaurant. Mr Perez Vargas' husband told the panel he went to the door to hand the keys over while his partner remained inside, saying Mr Rockcliff then screamed: 'He doesn't belong here. I will report to the Home Office and make sure he'll be deported back to his country,' Mr Rockcliff denied making racist comments, but admitted he told Mr Perez Vargas that if he 'was so unhappy, which was something that I did not understand, why didn't he go back to Mexico'. He also accepted saying 'something along the lines that he had heard the claimant had been sexually harassing staff', the panel heard. The tribunal found neither man was 'likely to be a reliable narrator of the events'. But the judges said they were 'satisfied that something along the lines of the things that the claimant complains about occurred' on the basis of Mr Rockcliff's responses to the panel. The panel heard he sent a text message to another member of staff the day after the fallout saying: 'I'm changing the kitchen culture. I finally lost all the dinosaurs/old brigade chefs to my great relief. 'I'm not sure that Eastern Europeans or Latin Americans have an innate understanding of English regional cookery and/or Mediterranean classic cuisine.' He also wrote a social media post saying classically-trained chefs were 'people with sautéed egos who have lost their mojo for the love of cooking and who have overcooked their wallets for fame over food'. More Trending While Mr Rockcliff denied the comments were 'directed' at Mr Perez Vargas, the tribunal found anyone who was familiar with the situation would know 'exactly who they were referring to'. The tribunal accepted Mr Rockcliff was not racist and did not discriminate against Mr Perez Vargas. But it said his behaviour was 'offensive' and 'problematic' and found it amounted to harassment related to race and sexual orientation. Twisted Edinburgh man caught spying on woman while she used toilet at McDonald's

More info A pervert pensioner has been caught spying on a woman while she used a toilet at a McDonald's takeaway - just four months after he was sentenced for a similar offence. David Levenson was spotted peering over the cubicle and watching the victim urinating at the fast food outlet at Cameron Toll Shopping Centre in Edinburgh in August last year. The disgusted woman was said to have looked up and seen 'a flash of white hair' as the sleazy 73-year-old attempted to conceal himself within the cubicle. Levenson, from the city's Broughton area, fled the area but was quickly identified by cops after he was caught on the restaurant's CCTV system. The OAP has now been warned he faces a jail sentence after pleading guilty to concealing himself within the McDonald's toilets and watching the woman urinate when he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday. Prosecutor Gillian Koren told the court the victim attended the McDonald's outlet at the capital's Cameron Toll Shopping Centre with her children at around 12.30pm on August 11 last year. Ms Koren said while waiting on her family's food order to be prepared the woman used the toilet facilities. The fiscal said: 'When [the woman] was using the toilet she became aware of shadows on the floor coming from above her and she saw the accused's head shoot down and saw a flash of white hair. 'She was shaken and appalled by the incident and she immediately left the cubicle area. The accused was seen, after being discovered by [the woman], to quickly leave the toilet area. The witness spoke to staff and the police were contacted immediately.' Officers attended at the restaurant and soon identified Levenson after viewing CCTV footage of him fleeing the scene. Solicitor Kirsty Harper asked the court to grant her client bail due to him being the carer for his 'frail' long term partner and remanding him in custody would be 'a punitive measure on her'. A custodial sentence is very much at the forefront of the court's mind in light of that.' Sheriff Cook noted Levenson was already subject to the requirements of the sex offenders register and said his name would again be added for this conviction. Sentence was deferred to next month. Levenson gave the middle finger sign and swore at the waiting press as he left the court building following his guilty plea. The OAP was caught carrying out a similar act at a McDonald's in the capital's city centre in August 2023 and handed himself into police following a public appeal. He admitted the offence when he appeared in court last March and was sentenced four weeks later - just four months before carrying out his latest offence. On that occasion Levenson was placed on the sex offenders register for 12 months and ordered to carry out 135 hours of unpaid work.

Influencer stabbed to death in shopping centre by 'cleaner who felt rejected'

Tais Bruna de Castro, 36, was having lunch on Monday, June 2, at the Beco Fino shopping centre in the Jundiaí neighbourhood of São Paulo when she was was stabbed to death. Without warning, the knifeman launched a frenzied knife attack, stabbing Bruna more than 20 times in front of shocked bystanders. Claudio Elizeu, a 40-year-old cleaner at the same complex, was arrested at the scene, CNN Brazil reports. According to local police, Elizeu, who was employed as a janitor at the mall, told investigators that he killed Tais because she had no interest in pursuing a relationship with him. Authorities say there is no evidence that the two shared a close personal relationship. Bruna was well known among literary circles online. She ran a blog titled Reader Fashion , where she shared book recommendations, literary commentary, and engaged with a growing community of followers. She also worked as a travel agent in the same shopping centre where the attack took place. Following her death, Bruna's family posted a heartfelt message on her Instagram account, which had over 8,000 followers, thanking her audience for their support and honouring her passion for literature. "This week, our dear Tais Bruna, the owner of this profile, left us in a very sad and unbelievable way," the post read. "'Reader Fashion' was one of her greatest joys. Talking about books, recommending new reads, and interacting with you brought light into her days. We, her family, sincerely thank you for the messages and prayers. Tais, we will love you forever." Her death is part of a disturbing trend of violence against women, particularly influencers and public figures, in Latin America. Just weeks before Bruna's murder, Colombian model and influencer María José Estupiñán, 22, was shot at point-blank range by a gunman disguised as a delivery driver. The shooting occurred outside her home in the northeastern city of Cúcuta, and was captured on chilling CCTV footage. Her mother can be heard screaming, 'No, not my daughter!' as the gunman fled the scene. In another recent case, Mexican TikTok star and beautician Valeria Márquez, 23, was gunned down while live streaming from her salon, Blossom the Beauty Lounge, in the state of Jalisco. The graphic footage shows her looking out the window moments before gunshots rang out, striking her in the chest and head. These incidents have sparked renewed calls for more robust protections for women and public figures in the region. Advocacy groups continue to demand urgent action from governments to address the systemic violence that disproportionately targets women, both online and offline.
