SIBU (May 10): A semi-detached house at Jalan Apollo Barat here was completely destroyed in a fire earlier this afternoon.
Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sibu chief Andy Alie said they received a distress call regarding the incident at 11.06am.
'Upon arrival, firefighters from the Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) along with backup from BBP Sibu Sentral found that the fire had engulfed a semi-detached permanent structure house, which was already 100 per cent destroyed,' he said in a statement today.
According to him, the operation involved 20 personnel and the deployment of two Fire Rescue Tenders (FRT) and a Hilux pickup truck.
'Firefighting operations were carried out immediately to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby properties.
'An inspection also found that firecrackers were being stored inside the house,' Andy added.
He said no injuries were reported in the incident, and further investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Operations Centre, the deceased was identified as Chang Chun Jie, 26, who was the driver of the compact sedan. 'Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that the accident involved three vehicles. The rescue team extricated the compact sedan driver, who was trapped inside the vehicle, using rescue tools. Rescue personnel working to extricate the victim from the wreckage. – Bomba photo 'The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer from the Ministry of Health (MOH) and was later handed over to the police for further action,' the statement read. Three occupants of the Toyota pickup, two adult women and a young girl, sustained minor injuries and were taken to Bau Hospital by an MOH ambulance. An adult male occupant of the same vehicle was unharmed. The driver of the Nissan Navara, an adult male, also suffered minor injuries and was brought to Bau Hospital by members of the public. According to Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) zone chief Wan Kamarudin Wan Ahmad, the incident occurred at Hotel Sing Soon Huat along Jalan Pasar. The man had reportedly climbed onto the hotel roof, which prompted members of the public to alert Bomba to the situation. A rescue team was immediately despatched to the scene after Bomba received a distress call at 8.53am. 'Rescue personnel managed to safely calm and persuade the man to come down without harm,' Wan Kamarudin said. The individual was later handed over to the police for further action. A spokesperson from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Operations Centre said they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 8.14am. 'Upon arrival at the scene at 8.23am, the team from the Batu Lintang Fire and Rescue Station found an adult male on the roof of a shophouse building at MJC Batu Kawa,' he said in a statement. Bomba and police personnel apprehend the victim who was safely brought down. According to the spokesperson, the victim is in his 30s and works as a manual labourer. It is understood that the man was previously reported to have been at the same location at around 340am, but disappeared before the rescue team arrived. 'An operation to persuade and calm the victim was carried out in cooperation with the police, before the man was eventually apprehended and safely brought down at 10.18am. 'Once the situation was confirmed to be safe, the operation was fully concluded at 10.24am,' the spokesperson added.
