Siraj and Sameer sent to central jail in Visakhapatnam

The Hindu28-05-2025

With their police custody coming to an end on Wednesday, Siraj-Ur-Rehaman of Vizianagaram and Syed Sameer of Hyderabad, who had been accused of making improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and planning to trigger blasts in Vizianagaram and several places in the State, were sent to the Visakhapatnam Central Jail after being produced in the court here amid security.
The two accused persons had been arrested and later remanded in police custody for one week by the court.
Top officials of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Counter Intelligence, Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) and other agencies grilled the accused in the Police Training College.
Their arrest assumed significance after the Pahlagam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, India's counter attack on Pakistan.
The police had seized the bank accounts of Siraj and tried to know about his funding sources. They also questioned him on his links with Syed and other persons who were reportedly based in the Middle East nations.
The investigating officials were expected to seek police custody of the accused again to gather more clues in the case.

Pahalgam attacks: Patrons punished, perpetrators still at large

Even as six weeks have passed after 25 tourists and a local resident were brutally killed at a scenic meadow near Pahalgam in south Kashmir, the terrorists, who carried out the attack, remain at large. India responded to the carnage by launching 'Operation Sindoor' on May 7, targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and areas under illegal occupation of Pakistan, and sending out a strong message to the 'deep state' of the neighbouring country. A four-day-long cross-border military flare-up followed, which came to its end on May 10. New Delhi also put in abeyance its Indus Water Treaty with Islamabad, apart from other measures. But, despite a massive manhunt by the J&K police and Indian Army, the five terrorists, who went on a killing spree on the meadow that day, appear to have vanished like ghosts into the forests and mountains of south Kashmir. The April 22 massacre, claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadowy proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, marked one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in Kashmir in recent years. It also triggered one of the most intense security operations in the Valley since the abrogation of Article 370 in time for political consolidation in J& April 27, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) formally took over the probe. Its teams have been stationed in Srinagar and south Kashmir, working closely with J&K police and military intelligence units, combing through call records, travel data, and seized digital devices. Yet, there has been no arrest or clue leading to the terrorists, who turned the scenic tourist destination into a killing field. This is in sharp contrast to the terrorist attack at Pulwama on February 14, 2019, when, within 10 days after 40 CRPF personnel were killed in a suicide bombing, the security forces tracked down and eliminated the main perpetrators in a village just 12 km from the scene. 'The Pulwama operation showed the strength of the intelligence and response apparatus,' a retired senior police officer told DH. 'This time, the same ecosystem seems slower, fragmented – or perhaps outsmarted.' 'They (terrorists who carried out the April 22 attacks) have either exfiltrated through deep forest or are hiding in plain sight with local support,' he said. 'When we eliminated the terrorists responsible for the Pulwama attack, it restored some public faith. Today, that faith is shaken.' Intelligence agencies suggest that Pahalgam attackers – three Pakistanis and two local residents - were well-trained to operate without digital trails, making them hard to track. 'The terrain is their ally,' another former security official said. 'They can live off the grid for weeks. They're using our mountains and forests the way guerrilla fighters do. That's the real challenge.' In mid-May, six local militants were killed in two operations in Tral and Shopian. But as officials later clarified, none of them were directly linked to the April 22 massacre. The prolonged failure to trace the attackers is raising difficult questions. The public is anxious, especially in tourism-dependent areas. 'It's not just the killings — it's the silence since. That's what's most terrifying,' said a hotelier in Pahalgam. More worryingly, experts believe this could signal a new phase in Kashmir's militancy — one where handlers across the border are deploying mercenaries physically and mentally well-trained and capable of evading security dragnets for a long period. And, as long as the 'Butchers of Baisaran' remain free, the horror they unleashed will loom large over the fragile calm of Kashmir.

Gujarat Congress general secy held over post on Opration Sindoor

The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary, Rajesh Soni, was on Friday arrested by the Gujarat Police Cyber Crime Cell over an alleged objectionable social media post on Operation Sindoor, officials said even as GPCC president Shaktisinh Gohil criticised the move. According to police officials, Soni allegedly made disparaging statements about the Armed Forces in his post. Cyber Crime Cell Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Sharma told The Indian Express, 'Soni was booked under BNS Sections 152 (endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India) and 353 (making, publishing or circulating statements that could lead to public mischief) for demoralising the army.' SP Sharma confirmed that earlier in the day, Soni was detained from his home in Ahmedabad and subsequently placed under arrest. He was produced before court, which then sent him to judicial custody. Demanding 'immediate bail' from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel for 'social leader and political activist' Rajeshbhai T Soni, GPCC president Shaktisinh Gohil said, 'Last night, just like a terrorist is being caught, Rajeshbhai T Soni was arrested by Gandhinagar Cyber Crime. If we look at the post, the only thing that is clear is that the soldiers of our brave army should get credit for the bravery they have shown and the money from the public treasury should not be used for publicity and … political gains should not be taken in the name of Operation Sindoor.' Soni had uploaded around three to four posts on social media platforms on Operation Sindoor. 'This has been in the minds of all the citizens of the country that the credit for the brave work done by our army should go to them. Seeing the way the government is doing publicity, they have expressed their concern that the soldiers will not get credit. If they only raise their voice for the army or express their concern that they will not get credit, how can it be a crime?' Gohil said. He further said, 'The Supreme Court recently took note of the government's policy of filing cases through misuse of the Gujarat Police and severely criticised the police. I hope the police use wisdom…Rajeshbhai Soni is not a terrorist… he should be released immediately. The entire country and Congress are on the side of the army.' Gohil also put out his statement on the microblogging site X, saying: 'The whole country and the Congress are in favor of the army. If it is a crime to take the side of the army only, then all the Congress workers including me will post and raise their voices in favor of the army. if they have courage, then the government should put all of us in jail.' Gohil's post tagging Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi, Gujarat Police stated, 'When late Manmohan Singh ji was the Prime Minister, many BJP leaders and supporters used to write false things at will, but the Congress government at the Centre or the states did not try to curb the fundamental freedom of expression or register a case' Gohil demanded immediate bail for the political functionary.
