Gulf Air Expands Fleet with 18 Boeing 787s Powered by GE Engines

Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa has secured a deal for Gulf Air to acquire 18 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft fitted with General Electric engines, marking a departure from the carrier's previous reliance on Rolls‑Royce engines. At a meeting held in Washington with U. S. President Donald Trump, the agreement was signed alongside a broader $17 billion suite of investments from Bahrain in the United States. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick estimated the aviation component alone at around $7 billion, with support for some 30,000 American jobs. The state-run Bahrain News Agency confirmed that all 18 aircraft will be supplied under the deal. Under terms agreed with Boeing and GE Aerospace, 12 of the 787s will be delivered as firm orders, with options to add a further six jets. Additionally, the arrangement includes up to 40 GE engines. Based on precedents, analysts estimate the aircraft element to be worth approximately $2.8 billion. ADVERTISEMENT This marks Gulf Air's first significant pivot away from Rolls‑Royce, which currently powers its fleet of 10 Dreamliners. Gulf Air CEO Jeffrey Goh has previously expressed concerns about the Rolls‑Royce Trent 1000's reliability issues, indicating this switch may enhance operational stability and reduce maintenance overheads. Industry observers note such engine shifts are not uncommon. The Boeing 787 was designed with interchangeable engine interfaces to accommodate either GE's GEnx or Rolls‑Royce's Trent 1000, simplifying transitions between manufacturers. The deal coincides with Gulf Air's strategic expansion, including resuming direct flights to New York's JFK from October, operated by the new 787‑9 aircraft. With plans to grow its network by 25 percent over five years, the carrier aims to boost connectivity to major financial and leisure hubs. U. S. Commerce Secretary Lutnick celebrated the sale, calling it a testament to American industrial and technological strength. Meanwhile, Crown Prince Salman stressed the authenticity of the deal, stating, 'These aren't fake deals,' and describing Gulf Air's move as both a fleet modernisation and a strategic step for Bahrain's aviation ambitions. Beyond aviation, Bahrain pledged further investments in U. S. energy, technology, manufacturing, and security sectors. These include initiatives to enhance domestic aluminium production, LNG output, AI chip partnerships, and server infrastructure supported by firms like Oracle and Cisco. A memorandum of understanding on commercial nuclear power development was also signed. The announcement follows a wave of Gulf deals brokered during Trump's Middle East diplomacy. In May, Qatar placed Boeing orders valued at $96 billion across wide-body fleets, Saudi Arabia committed $600 billion in U. S. investment pledges, while the UAE agreed to a $14.5 billion order for Boeing 787 and 777X jets. Gulf Air's move to GE engines aligns with efforts to enhance reliability and streamline maintenance—a shift driven by enduring technical issues with the Trent 1000 that had led to flight cancellations and frequency reductions. GE's GEnx engines are noted for improved fuel efficiency, lower parts count, extended on-wing time, and reduced maintenance needs—reportedly 15 percent more fuel-efficient than their CF6 predecessors. As part of the larger economic package, Bahrain's king is scheduled to visit Washington later this year to finalise the agreements and reinforce the partnership with the United States.

Luxury doesn't shout

Not long ago, I stood on the edge of Palm Jumeirah, Dubai's renowned man-made island, watching our team activate the last of six towering digital unipoles. I remember the feeling – this wasn't just another advertising platform. It was a moment that captured what luxury advertising should feel like. No clutter. No noise. Just unmatched prestige, in one of the most iconic destinations in the world. We call them 'The Royals'. And there's a reason for that. Advertising, especially in luxury, has always been a game of context. The right brand in the wrong place loses more than attention; it loses meaning. What we built at Palm Jumeirah is a response to that. A curated environment – zero clutter, and full impact. Not one other media asset stands within a square kilometre of these six digital landmarks. Each screen rises 15 metres high, stretching 8 metres across, positioned with surgical accuracy at the entrance and exit to Palm Jumeirah – the driveway of the elite. The location attracts more than 30,000 high-income residents – some arrive in Rolls-Royces, others via yachts – Michelin-star diners, A-list celebrities, and global executives who don't just consume luxury, but define it. These are not passing glances; they are purposeful audiences. And that's where the real value lies. Luxury brands understood this from day one. Chanel was first, followed by Bvlgari, Hermes, Tiffany & Co., BMW and Rolex. These aren't just advertisers; they're curators of culture. They chose 'The Royals' media network not because they needed another screen. They chose it because they needed a stage. Luxury doesn't play games. It doesn't shout. It doesn't hustle. It whispers in the right places, knowing the right people are already listening. We've seen more than 177 million monthly impressions. More than 428,000 unique high-value individuals have been reached. But that's not the whole story. What matters more is the quality of those impressions. The intention. The exclusivity. These aren't drive-by views. They're premium engagements – measured, verified, optimised. Thanks to our sister company DXTA Technology operating under the umbrella of W Group Holding, each campaign runs on audience measurement and data analytics. We use predictive mobility models, not guesswork. We map real exposure, not just footfall. And the result: Less waste, more impact. But data is only part of the picture. 'The Royals' network wasn't easy. We built it in one month. That's unheard of. We overcame engineering headaches, logistical puzzles and regulatory labyrinths. We laid power lines under an island bridge. We negotiated with monorail operators and worked through sandstorms – at 2 am, under floodlights, with surgical focus. We didn't cut corners. We cut through barriers. Why? Because luxury deserves better than 'good enough'. As the industry keeps chasing bigger, faster and louder, I believe the future of luxury advertising will swing back to something quieter. Sharper. More intentional. 'The Royals' are a glimpse of that future. In a city obsessed with luxury, we asked ourselves: How do you elevate a brand in a way that feels as rare and powerful as the brand itself? We found our answer in simplicity … and placement. From the start, we made every decision with intention. From the elegant minimalism of the structure to the anti-glare lighting designed not to intrude but to compliment the Palm's unique architecture. From sustainable construction materials to premium, energy-efficient LED screens that display only the most refined campaigns. Luxury brands are selective for a reason. Their customers don't respond to volume. They respond to value, to context, to craft. A Chanel bag isn't about stitching and leather. It's about identity. The same goes for luxury advertising. And that's what 'The Royals' give them: not just space, but significance. What's interesting is how many people tell me that they remember exactly which brand they saw the last time they drove past 'The Royals'. That's rare. We're so used to ignoring ads. But when the environment is curated, when there's no clutter, people pay attention. They don't just see the brand; they experience it. That's the future of luxury media, if you ask me. It's not about bigger budgets or louder screens. It's about less, fewer distractions, sharper impact. It's about creating room for prestige to breathe. Brands don't need more space. They need better space. Focused space. Premium space. And above all, meaningful space. And that's what 'The Royals' offer. By Philip Matta, CEO, Hypermedia

Rolls-Royce Black Badge Spectre Adds Sport Mode

Rolls-Royce may have just created its first true sports car. During the prestigious Rodeo Drive Concours d'Elegance in Beverly Hills on June 15, the luxury marque offered an exclusive opportunity to test drive the Black Badge Spectre—a bold evolution of its all-electric model that includes two surprising features: Sport Mode and Launch Control. Sleek, Bold and Surprisingly Youthful While the original Spectre debuted in 2022, the Black Badge version brings a daring edge. Its commanding presence remains with a long silhouette, wide stance, and a fastback rear. But with this edition, Rolls-Royce appears to target a younger, sportier demographic—those who prefer to be behind the wheel rather than chauffeured. Our test vehicle came dressed in a striking Salamanca Blue exterior, paired with a Mandarin Orange interior. While vibrant colors are typical for sports cars, they're rarely seen in the Rolls-Royce world—unless, of course, it's a Black Badge model. Custom features included contrast stitching, navy blue 'RR' headrest monograms, a thick blue steering wheel, and polished steel accents. The most luxurious touch? A $33,000 illuminated package featuring the brand's Shooting Star Headliner and the first-ever Starlight Doors, elevating the night driving experience to something celestial. Infinity Mode Unlocks Full Power The Black Badge Spectre introduces Infinity Mode, which acts like a traditional sport mode. By activating it through a button on the steering wheel, the driver unlocks the car's full 659 horsepower, an increase of 82 horsepower over the base Spectre. While the driving feel doesn't shift drastically, the throttle becomes sharper and the instrument cluster takes on a more aggressive visual tone. Spirited Mode Launches a New Experience Even more surprising is the addition of Launch Control, known here as Spirited Mode. To activate it, the driver presses the brake and floors the accelerator. The car shudders in anticipation, providing a thrilling moment before launch. Upon releasing the brake, all 792 lb-ft of torque explodes onto the pavement, sending the 3-ton coupe from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. Executing this move not once, but twice during our drive, we were amazed. Not only at the performance—but at what it signifies: a Rolls-Royce that performs like a sleeper sports car, while still delivering uncompromising luxury. For the Few Who Can Afford It The Rolls-Royce Black Badge Spectre is a bespoke creation, available only by special order. Our test model carried a staggering price tag of $566,100 USD. But for clients seeking elegance, individuality, and now—unexpected performance—it represents a new frontier for the marque.
