Zii Jia's comeback on the cards – but will he go through with it?

Long-term issue: Lee Zii Jia had been struggling with a left ankle ligament injury since December last year.
PETALING JAYA: Professional men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia is set to make an appearance at the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25-31 after a four-month absence.
Based on an update from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on July 29, Zii Jia has confirmed his participation in the tournament after receiving an invitation from the world body.
However, should the former world No. 2 change his mind, he still has time until Aug 12 to do so.
Zii Jia had been struggling with a left ankle ligament injury since December last year, and has only competed in two tournaments this year, the Orleans Masters and All-England in March before the injury flared up again.
His management, Team LZJ, had successfully secured a protected ranking for Zii Jia, and he initially planned to return at the US Open in June, but had to withdraw as he had yet to fully recover.
For the same reason, Zii Jia also missed the China Open and Japan Open, which ended just a few weeks ago.
The former All-England champion recently sparked concern after posting a series of unsettling sketches on his social media, prompting fans to question his mental well-being.
While some viewed it as a form of artistic expression, others believe it could be a reflection of his frustration and demoralisation stemming from his prolonged absence from the court.
Meanwhile, if he competes in the World Championships this time, he will be joined by another compatriot, Leong Jun Hao, who will be making his debut in the tournament.
Paris proved to be a memorable venue for Zii Jia last year, as he captured a bronze medal at the Olympic Games.
In the women's singles event, Malaysia will also be represented by two shuttlers, Goh Jin Wei and K. Letshanaa.
All players will find out their opponents and potential path to the podium when the World Championships draw is held on Aug 13.

REUTERS/Daniel Cole/File Photo LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -The Los Angeles Lakers have signed five-time NBA All-Star guard Luka Doncic to a three-year, $165 million contract extension, securing the long-term future of one of basketball's brightest stars, the team announced on Saturday. "I just signed my extension with the Lakers," Doncic wrote in a social media post. "Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning." Lakers President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka called it a "monumental moment" for the franchise. "Luka Doncic's future is with the Los Angeles Lakers," Pelinka said in a statement. "Luka is one of the game's most transcendent players, and his on-court dominance and passion is without compare." Doncic, 26, was acquired by Los Angeles in a blockbuster trade in February that sent Anthony Davis to the Mavericks in a move that stunned the sports world. Since joining the Lakers, he has averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.6 steals over 28 games to close the regular season, helping lift the Lakers to the third seed in the Western Conference. The Slovenian guard, who was the third overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, boasts career averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists across seven NBA seasons with the Dallas Mavericks and Lakers. Doncic, who has been selected five times to the All-NBA first team, led the league in scoring during the 2023-24 campaign with 33.9 points per game and recorded a career-high 73 points in a single contest. He ranks third all-time in regular season scoring average and has notched 82 career triple-doubles, fourth among active players. (Reporting by Rory Carroll in Los Angeles)

The 33-year-old, who won the Paris-Roubaix Femmes in April, attacked seven kilometres from the summit to overtake Niamh Fisher-Black (Lidl–Trek) and Yara Kastelijn (Fenix–Deceuninck) before riding clear. She then crossed the line one minute 45 seconds ahead of Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance–Soudal), with Fisher‑Black in third two minutes 15 seconds behind. It was the third straight stage victory for France which capped an aggressive display from Ferrand-Prevot, who started the day 26 seconds off the general classification leader Kimberley Le Court Pienaar (AG Insurance-Soudal. Her win put her in the overall lead, with Gigante, two minutes 37 seconds adrift, the only general classification favourite still able to challenge her on the final 124.1km mountain ride from Praz-sur-Arly to Chatel. Mauritian Le Court crashed on the descent from the Col du Frene with 63km remaining, briefly trailing the peloton by about a minute before resuming her chase. She rejoined later but the effort and the relentless climbing cost her dear in the general classification. Ferrand-Prevot, Paris Olympics gold medallist in cross-country mountain biking, will take her commanding lead into Sunday's final stage, aiming to become the first Frenchwoman to win the Tour de France Femmes. Shuttler Sze Fei weds sweetheart before Paris campaign

PETALING JAYA: Former world No. 1 men's doubles shuttler Goh Sze Fei has officially tied the knot with his sweetheart, Yoke Shan, on Saturday (Aug 2). A photo that has gone viral on social media shows a dashing Sze Fei in a grey suit beaming with joy alongside a radiant Yoke Shan, who looked stunning in a white wedding gown, accompanied by Sze Fei's siblings. The 27-year-old had gotten engaged to Yoke Shan in December last year. Tying the knot couldn't have come at a better time for Sze Fei, who was gearing up for the World Championships in Paris next month with Nur Izzuddin Rumsani. Sze Fei and Izzuddin have been enjoying a strong season so far, having started the year ranked world No. 2. They kicked off their campaign in style by capturing the India Open title in January, defeating South Korea's Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae in the final. The pair continued their fine run by reaching the final of the Japan Open three weeks ago. However, they had to settle for second place in Tokyo. They even had a brief taste of the world No. 1 ranking, holding the top spot for a few weeks from May 27 before ceding it to the Korean pair.
