Johor's Works, Transportation, Infrastructure, and Communications Committee chairman, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, said the Shuttle Tebrau trains will be used to increase the frequency of travel from JB Sentral to Kempas Station. The Shuttle Tebrau, operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), has been running since July 2015 and runs 31 trips daily in both directions between Johor Bahru Sentral and the Woodlands Train Checkpoint in Singapore. Each trip takes about five minutes. The 1.1-km KTM service can carry up to 8,635 passengers a day, with tickets priced at RM5 (S$1.50) from JB to SG and S$5 from SG to JB. The RTS Link, which was said to be around 50% complete in February and slated to be completed on Jan 1, 2027, will operate daily from 6 a.m. to midnight. Singapore's renewables usage hits record high as imports, solar output rise
[SINGAPORE] Singapore boosted the share of renewables in its power generation mix to a record high in May, an analysis of the latest market data showed, as the country ramped up renewable imports and accelerated local solar power generation. Domestic solar generation in May rose at the fastest pace since March 2024 and renewable imports rose a third straight month to their highest in more than two years, lifting the share of renewables in the city-state's power mix to 2.58 per cent, data from the National Electricity Market of Singapore showed. Regional electricity trade is crucial to Singapore's aim to become carbon neutral by 2050, as Asia's second-smallest country has limited renewable energy potential. Cross-border power trade is also seen as key to easing regional reliance on fossil fuels amid growing data centre-driven power demand. Gas-fired power plants in Singapore account for about 95 per cent of its power capacity. In the five months through May, the data showed Singapore imported 122.7 million kilowatt-hours of clean power – 0.52 per cent of total generation – through the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore (LTMS) power trade route that was set up in 2022. It did not import any power during the same period last year, the data showed, and only started importing small quantities in the last quarter of 2024. Sign Up Sign Up The share of imports in Singapore's power mix rose for a third straight month in May, displacing some fossil fuel-fired generation. Singapore's total electricity generation grew 0.4 per cent during the first five months, the data showed. Though the imported power came through the LTMS framework, all of it originated from neighbouring Malaysia under a 50-megawatt supply agreement reached last year with Malaysian state utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad, said a source familiar with the matter who was not authorised to speak with media. Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) did not respond to a request for comment. The EMA last year doubled the capacity of electricity that can be traded in the second phase of the LTMS to 200 MW through additional supply from Malaysia. It said in October, however, that it had yet to finalise the terms of an extension to the supply of hydropower generated in Laos and sent to Singapore via Thailand and Malaysia. REUTERS

Malaysia's Second Finance Minister Amir Hamzah to take over Economy Minister's duties after Rafizi resignation
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia's Second Finance Minister Amir Hamzah Azizan will take on the duties and functions of the Economy Minister, a month after Rafizi Ramli resigned from the position following his defeat in a party election. The Cabinet made the decision in a meeting on Wednesday (Jun 25), said its secretary Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar in a statement on Friday. Amir Hamzah's 'primary responsibility' is to review and restructure the contents of the 13th Malaysia Plan, which is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament on Jul 31, said Shamsul Azri, who is also chief secretary to the government. Amir Hamzah will take into account additional information submitted by other ministries, as well as the sentiments of the Cabinet, he said. The 13th Malaysia Plan is a roadmap to tackle global shifts and domestic challenges and is set to be implemented from 2026 to 2030. Responding on Friday to Shamsul Azri's statement, former Economy Minister Rafizi said the last-minute decision to restructure the plan has raised concern among civil servants, market analysts monitoring national policy and the public. He questioned if the restructuring would be rushed and whether it would bypass the consultative process with stakeholders and experts, news outlet Malay Mail reported. He said politicising the plan would be 'a grave injustice to (civil servants) who have worked tirelessly — often for over 12 hours a day — over the past year'. Rafizi had said when he resigned on May 28 that the plan had been completed. It emphasises "comprehensive educational reforms, including several structural changes involving the Ministry of Education", Rafizi had said. "I hope the Cabinet will maintain some of the bold reforms related to the Ministry of Education in (the plan), even though I will no longer be part of the Cabinet." Rafizi stepped down after he lost the post of deputy president in his political party, Parti Keadilan Rakyat, to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar on May 23. He remains with the PKR and as Member of Parliament for Pandan. Rafizi's ally, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, resigned on the same day as him but his replacement has not been announced. Amir Hamzah, who was appointed Second Finance Minister in December 2023, thanked Anwar in a statement and said he had received feedback from fellow ministers indicating the need to revise the 13th Malaysia Plan to better reflect the aims of the government and sustain the momentum of economic reforms. Amir Hamzah is a member of the Senate, which comprises senators chosen for excellence in their respective professions and who represent minorities in society. He was appointed by Malaysia's King. He was previously chief executive of the country's Employees Provident Fund, one of the world's largest pension funds.
