Pole vault superstar Mondo Duplantis teases Noah Lyles about post-race push by rival Bednarek

National Post7 hours ago
Maybe only a track and field superstar like Mondo Duplantis could get away with such a mischievous question to Olympic 100-meter champion Noah Lyles.

The pole vault world record holder wanted to know more Friday about the shove Lyles got from Kenny Bednarek after winning the 200 at United States national championships two weeks ago.

'Can I ask a question?' Duplantis said at the end of a multi-athlete news conference in Poland — alongside Lyles but not Bednarek — on the eve of the sprinters renewing their rivalry in the 100 on the Diamond League circuit.

'I want to ask Noah about, like, that stare down and that push,' Duplantis said, smiling and looking right along the line to Lyles, 'because that (expletive) was kinda crazy game.'

Lyles repeated the answer he gave Aug. 4 in Eugene, Oregon, after the post-race beef with long-time teammate Bednarek seemed to fuel a must-see track rivalry ahead of the world championships next month in Tokyo.

'As coach said: 'No comment,'' Lyles replied, to laughter in the room.

Duplantis came back for more: 'Fair enough, fair enough. I enjoyed it, though, I enjoyed it.'

Lyles was invited to ask his own question of Duplantis. He suggested not setting another world record Saturday so that he might win the ring awarded by meet organizers for the best performance.

'No comment, no comment,' the U.S.-born Swedish star quipped back, to more laughter.

Duplantis set his 13th world record Tuesday in Hungary, raising the bar to 6.29 meters. One year ago he cleared 6.26 in Poland to add a single centimeter to the record-setting mark that won Olympic gold in Paris last August.

Bednarek is second on the season list at 9.79, clocked winning the U.S. national title that was skipped by Lyles, who has an automatic entry for Tokyo as the defending champion from 2023.

'You basically have the Olympic final maybe missing two people, adding in some just as fast people,' said Lyles, whose season best so far is 10 flat in London last month. 'It's going to be good, regardless.'

Vancouver's Little Mountain blanked by Venezuela 4-0 at Little League World Series

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT – Canada's run at the Little League World Series started on a sour note Friday as Vancouver's Little Mountain lost 4-0 to Latin America, represented by Venezuela's Cardenales Little League. The Canadian champions managed just one hit — a single by Tyson Grimsrud-Ronse — against starter Andres Reyes Querales and reliever Sebastian Lopez. Venezuela opened the scoring in the first inning when Lopez came home on a bases-loaded walk. In the second, Santiago Martinez doubled and scored on Reyes Querales's single before Alam Parra and Samuel Castillo crossed on wild pitches. Felix Hoyano took the loss for Canada, allowing four runs on six hits over three innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Arek Aubuchon followed with two scoreless innings of relief. Venezuela, which opened the tournament Wednesday with a 5-0 win over Puerto Rico, rolled through its regional tournament with a 46-6 run differential but needed a special U.S. travel exemption after visas were initially denied under U.S. President Donald Trump's restrictions affecting 19 countries. Canada will play Sunday against the winner of Saturday's game between Europe-Africa and Australia. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 15, 2025.

Sarah Nurse says PWHL Barbie can inspire next generation of female athletes

Sarah Nurse will start her first season with the still-unnamed Vancouver franchise in the Professional Women's Hockey League this fall — but she's already made her mark off the ice with a Barbie doll in her likeness. The Canadian forward, MVP at the 2022 Olympic women's hockey tournament, was one of two players featured in a recent collaboration between the PWHL, Tim Hortons and Mattel. Nurse and Montréal Victoire star Marie-Philip Poulin each have dolls dressed in PWHL gear, part of a project celebrating women's achievements in the sport. Nurse says it's a 'big privilege' to show the younger generation that women can be professional hockey players. 'There are so many women who are older than me, who never got the chance to play hockey or never had a hockey-playing Barbie doll to play with when they were younger,' she said. 'And so, I've really seen this Barbie be able to touch different generations of women.' Nurse has been part of a Barbie project before — she and Poulin were featured five years ago as Olympic players in a Hockey Canada partnership with Tim Hortons and Mattel. That campaign recognized their influence in helping open doors for women in the sport. 'They were such a huge success the first round, they had to bring them back again,' Nurse said. This latest edition, she said, is an opportunity to show girls that playing professional hockey can be an actual, tangible goal. Nurse and Poulin first saw their dolls during a joint shoot for the Barbie campaign, 'where even the Barbies had their own hair, makeup and wardrobe stylists.' 'I think it was really cool just to be in that environment. And then obviously to see these Barbies that are inspired by us is, it was really special,' she said. The off-ice highlight comes ahead of a new chapter in her playing career. Wednesdays What's next in arts, life and pop culture. Nurse spent the league's first two seasons with the Toronto Sceptres before signing with Vancouver in June after being left unprotected in the expansion draft, as the league expands to eight clubs with new West Coast franchises in B.C. and Seattle. Nurse joins a roster that includes Olympic teammates Emerance Maschmeyer and Claire Thompson. PWHL Vancouver will open its inaugural season in November at the Pacific Coliseum. It's another landmark in a high-profile career that has seen Nurse become the first female cover athlete for EA Sports' NHL video game in 2023 and help negotiate the PWHL's first collective bargaining agreement. Female Canadian athletes told recent gene tests don't meet World Athletics requirements

Female Canadian athletes have been told that the new gene tests they recently underwent do not comply with World Athletics' requirements, leaving them scrambling to complete new tests before the September 1 deadline for the world championships. French athletes are also seeking meets and camps outside their country to complete the one-off tests after the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Sports ruled them illegal in France. Athletics Canada commissioned Dynacare to conduct SRY gene tests, which help to determine biological sex, at the recent national championships. However, in an e-mail sent this week to athletes and seen by Reuters it said Dynacare 'has advised us that the test kits they provided were not of the required standard.' Why the outcome of Caster Semenya's sex-eligibility battle could set new precedents in sports Athletics Canada CEO Mathieu Gentes told Reuters on Friday that the federation is 'doing everything within its power in the interest of athletes to ensure that we meet World Athletics' September 1 deadline for completion of the test. 'It's a rapidly evolving situation which we're dealing with in real time,' Gentes said. 'We are working on solutions to assist athletes in locations around the world.' Dynacare, who were not immediately available to comment, are sending new test kits to athletes based in Canada and the U.S., along with testing locations, according to Athletics Canada. The French Athletics Federation (FFA) had planned to test athletes at the national championships but was told 'such tests are prohibited under the French Bioethics Law enacted in 1994,' the FAA said in a statement to Reuters. 'As a result, ultimately, no action was carried out. 'The federation is confident in World Athletics' ability to quickly find a solution and to ensure that French athletes can take part in international competitions under the best possible conditions.' World Athletics is working with the French federation to help athletes obtain tests at other meets or at their pre-worlds training camp outside France, said Jackie Brock-Doyle, Director of Special Projects for the sport's governing body. Brock-Doyle also said World Athletics is working with federations from Poland, Belgium and Switzerland to help facilitate testing for athletes competing at the four remaining Diamond League meetings hosted by those countries. Sex eligibility rules for female athletes are complex and legally difficult. Here's how they work World Athletics approved the introduction of a test to determine if an athlete is biologically female at their council meeting in March. '(The federations) all knew in March that we were going to introduce the SRY test,' Brock-Doyle told Reuters. 'We were asked during the press conference, 'Would we be bringing it in for the world championships?' And we said at the time, 'Yes, that is our intention.'' When pressed for details about the test at the March press conference, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said: 'The process is very straightforward, frankly very clear and it's an important one. And we will look for a testing provider, we will work on the timelines.' World Athletics then announced details of the SRY test on July 31. 'It's really important in a sport that's permanently trying to attract more women that they enter a sport believing there is no biological glass ceiling,' Coe said in a statement at the time. 'The test to confirm biological sex is a very important step in ensuring this is the case.' Brock-Doyle said World Athletics was not worried that female athletes would miss the September 13-21 worlds in Tokyo due to a failure to secure a test by the deadline. Brock-Doyle, who estimated that 40-50 per cent of athletes have been tested, said those who have completed the test but are still awaiting the result past the deadline can compete in Japan. 'Not every single result may come through, because some countries it may take two, three weeks,' she added. An adverse result – and potentially that athlete's performance at the worlds – would be investigated afterwards. Brock-Doyle also disagreed with criticism that the genetic testing regulations were pushed through too quickly. 'Would it have been better if we'd had a little bit more time? Maybe,' she said. 'But the reason we've chosen the world championships is that it's probably around 80-plus per cent of all our elite (female) athletes there.'
