Four Star Comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe 2025: 17 acclaimed shows you can still get tickets to see this weekend

Scotsman3 days ago
It's approaching the end of the second week of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the reviews have been continuing to pour in.
With the physical programme containing over 3,350 shows across 265 venues (with plenty more added after the print deadline), it can be a daunting task to work out what exactly you are going to see.
At The Scotsman we review hundreds of shows every year, with the best receiving a sought-after four or five star rating.
Several of those still have ticket availability for this weekend (August 15-17) so you can go and see what all the fuss is all about (bad luck if you wanted to see the likes of Cat Cohen, Josie Long, Bebe Cave, Sam Nicoresti or Helen Bauer - they are completely sold out after earning four or five star reviews from our critics ).
Here are 17 four star comedy shows our team of critics would recommend you see this weekend - and that still have ticket availability at time of writing.
You can book them all at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe website here.
1 . Kate Dolan: The Critic
There are still tickets left for every date of Aussie comic Kate Dolan's run, until August 24 at 6.25pm each day at Assembly George Square. What we said: "With a tendency to insert a running commentary of self-mocking, quirky vocal tics and inflections into her stories, in a manner I found most reminiscent of Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective of all things." | Contributed Photo Sales
2 . Zoe Coombs Marr: The Splash Zone
There's good ticket availability for Zoe Coombes Marr this weekend - and until her last show on August 24 - at the Monkey Barrel at 3.35pm each day. What we said: "It's a brilliant demonstration of ADHD as a comic super-power, with the laughs supercharged by callback after callback, which ties the whole meandering narrative into a coherent whole." | Contributed Photo Sales
3 . Jonny Pelham: Is It Me?
Be quick and you can still catch Jonny Pelham's four star show at the Monkey Barrel this weekend at 9pm each day at Monkey Barrel at The Hive. He's playing until August 24. What we said: "Pelham has a way of laughing at his troubles which will help you laugh at your own, or just forget them for an hour, which is what comedy can do, if it's done right." | Contributed Photo Sales
4 . Aideen McQueen: Waiting for Texto
If you want more theatrical comedy this weekend there are tickets left this weekend for Aideen McQueen - at the Gilded Balloon Patter House at 2.20pm each day. There's also availability for the rest of her run until August 24. What we said: "Remarkably, this is McQueen's first full-length Fringe show and it's terrifically impressive: a warm and funny debut." | Contributed Photo Sales

Couple get married on stage in the middle of Edinburgh Fringe show

There are plenty of shows about weddings at the Edinburgh Festival Karp and Joseph Martin star in one, the inordinately long-titled The Fit Prince (who gets switched on the square in the frosty castle the night before (insert public holiday here)).But on Saturday, they became the first couple to marry onstage as part of the official Fringe wedding in the 750-seat Pleasance Grand was ticketed with friends and family seated alongside other performers and fringe goers. "We've been a real life couple for 11 years and we're having a sort of a small ceremony in September but we wanted to do the legal bit first and we thought Edinburgh's a very special place for us so why not do it there?" says Joseph. Both grooms were in outfits designed by Edinburgh based Cosimo Damiano Angiulli (Simo the label) and came down the aisles to their own distinctive theme tunes."There was a moment where we left the stage just before the audience were led in and I felt the nerves kick in a little bit," says Joseph."But then show mode kicked in and bizarrely, it felt like the natural place for us to be at that point. We're at home. "The ceremony was conducted by Jackie Blackburn from Edinburgh City Council."I have been involved in many unique ceremonies but none quite on the scale of this," she says."It was by far the largest venue and greatest number of guests I've officiated in front of. "My favourite part of their ceremony was when the grooms made their vows and declarations to each other - they were so sincere as in addition to the required legalities they had written their own personal vows, it was like a period of calm in the midst of magical romantic mayhem." Joseph, who is from Northamptonshire, vowed to continue to enable Linus's "insane ideas" - as he dressed as Princes Diana and Gwyneth Paltrow for their other shows Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story, and Gwyneth Goes who's from Sweden, described Joseph as the "sweetest most ridiculous person" and said he couldn't wait to create "more stupid fringe shows" sets of parents joined their sons on stage where Linus's mother Elisabeth Ljunggren said they were happy to share their day."Love is a gift to cherish and care for, every day in good times and bad, in sickness and health," she said."We love you both to the moon and back."Fellow performers including Sooz Kemper, Emily Lamey and theatre company Recent Cutbacks provided the entertainment, and guests were invited to donate to charity or buy tickets to their shows in lieu of happy couple had just over an hour with their guests in the outdoor bar before they had to leave for that day's with US and UK dates in September and December, there's little time for a honeymoon either."I'm not sure there'll be time for a real honeymoon for a little while at least but performing at the fringe is very much a honeymoon in itself, very relaxing," says Linus."Maybe we'll climb Arthur's seat. That seems like a good way to celebrate our Scottish wedding."

My Festival Seiriol Davies

The writer, performer and composer of How to Win Against History on receiving a one-star review from The Scotsman, the nocturnal benefits of white noise, and that time a plane crashed into their farm. I mean I'm constantly told that How To Win Against History is a cult phenomenon: a rollicking, ridiculous, fabulous, heartbreaking, explosive ride and a properly unique experience that's perfect for the Fringe. If you've ever felt that the world rejects you but you desperately want to be seen, then come to How to Win and feel at home! Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad What will we learn from your show that we didn't know before? How the 'History' we're taught has had all the best bits scrubbed out. Seiriol Davies | How To Win Against History Who or what was the biggest inspiration for your show? Henry Cyril Paget. Google him. I need say nothing more. What's the best review you've ever had, and the worst? My first year at the Fringe, eleven friends and I came with a show and stayed in a one bedroom flat. Yes, there was a sleeping rota. The Scotsman's one star review said 'They have mistaken themselves for people with talent.' So of course we were right out on the Mile proclaiming ''People with talent!' says the Scotsman!' Best? Fifteen-odd years later the Telegraph proclaimed How to Win to be 'a work of genius' which was a nice tonic. Oh and one time, my mam said she thought something was 'actually quite good'. Tell us something about you that would surprise people. The day before I left home for uni, a plane crashed into my farm, the farm was turned into a military police incident zone and I had my brand new camera confiscated by a man with an assault rifle. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad What are the best and worst things that have happened to you at a festival? Worst: Bestival one year. It rained constantly. The toilet cleaning staff walked out on day one, so for three days the toilets were all mountainous piles of grim. Best: same year, I met Matt Blake with whomst I made How to Win, as well as much other silly stuff. What's the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night? First: coffee. Last: set up a complicated system of white noise/podcasts and then lie there trying to work out if the white noise is perfect or needs changing.
