Man dead and child injured after shots fired at shopping centre in Ireland
The PA news agency understands that the man's wounds were thought to be self-inflicted.
A young girl was also injured in the incident but did not require hospital care.
Ireland's justice minister Jim O'Callaghan has described it as a 'really shocking incident'.
One local councillor told how people ran terrified from the shopping centre in Carlow town as shots were fired.
Fergal Browne said: "I think it is all under control now, it seems the worst is over. People were obviously terrified, a bank holiday Sunday, going into town to do their shopping.
"People ran from the centre crying and upset. There were a bunch of foreign students in the area, who could not believe they were caught up in the middle of all of it.
"It's a busy spot. We launched a photographic exhibition there on Friday night in the shopping centre."
The body of the man remains at the scene and will not be removed until the area has been declared safe.
The shopping centre has been evacuated and emergency services remain at the scene, but gardai said there is no further concern for public safety.
A Garda spokesperson said they were alerted to reports of a firearm discharge at Fairgreen Shopping Centre shortly after 6.15pm.
The spokesperson said: 'An Garda Siochana are currently at the scene, with the shopping centre and car park cordoned off. The cordon will remain in place overnight.
'A white Irish adult male is deceased at the scene. The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been requested to attend.'
'A female juvenile received treatment from paramedics following the incident but did not require hospital care. It's undetermined at this time as to how those injuries were sustained.'
Ireland's deputy premier, Simon Harris, said he was 'deeply concerned' to hear about the incident and was being kept briefed.
Mr Harris said: 'I understand a young child has been hurt and I join with people across our country in thinking of them and their family tonight.
'I am also thinking of all those who witnessed this situation and the awful shock and upset it must have caused them. I know their families and communities will rally to support them. I am grateful to our emergency services for their work and response.'
The Tanaiste added: 'This is a live Garda investigation with the support of members of the Army bomb disposal unit.
'I have been in touch with the chief of staff of the defence forces, Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy, in relation to this incident and the assistance our defence forces are providing.
'It's important now that our Gardai can carry out this investigation thoroughly.'
Mr O'Callaghan added: 'My thoughts are with everyone affected by the shooting and the community and families impacted, including those working at the scene.
'I would appeal to anyone who has any information to speak to the gardai and help with their investigations in any way that they can.'
Gardai have asked that anyone who may have recorded footage of the incident not share it on social media platforms or messaging apps, but instead provide it to Carlow Garda Station.

Graham Linehan, the Father Ted creator, has accused JK Rowling of failing to defend him after a trans backlash derailed his career. The Irish comedy writer, 57, claimed the Harry Potter author's 'silence' over his cancellation made him feel isolated and 'toxic'. Linehan said he initially welcomed Ms Rowling's attacks on the SNP government's self-ID reforms, before accusing her of failing to defend his right to free speech over the trans controversy. I can finally relax, I can finally fight back because someone's on my side, you know? 'And now her silence about me is just added to the feeling that, that I've done something wrong, that I'm toxic and I know I am toxic, but it's not because I've done anything wrong. 'It's because of things like that. It's because people, people like JK Rowling won't stand up in defence of me. So it wasn't just the [trans rights activist] side pushing me out. It was a feeling of lack of solidarity and the kind of an embarrassment at my presence in the fight.' Rowling led criticism of SNP attempts to make it easier for biological men to legally change their gender that were dropped following a backlash. She has been in a long-running row over gender with Nicola Sturgeon, the former first minister, who supported plans to increase rights of transgender people. In her new memoir, Ms Sturgeon said she had endured a surge of 'vile' abuse after Ms Rowling posted a selfie in a T-shirt with the slogan: 'Nicola Sturgeon, destroyer of women's rights'. Ms Sturgeon claimed it had made her feel 'more at risk of possible physical harm'. Ms Rowling accused Ms Sturgeon of a shameless denial of reality over transgender issues. In 2023, a comedy show featuring Linehan in Edinburgh was cancelled because of complaints. Leith Arches said it had pulled the gig because it did not support the comedian, and his views did 'not align with our overall values'. Next month, Linehan is due to appear in court after pleading not guilty to harassment and criminal damage against a transgender woman. Linehan also commented on the case of Sandie Peggie, a nurse who claims she was subject to unlawful harassment under the Equality Act when she was expected to share a changing room with Dr Beth Upton, a biological man, when she worked at NHS Fife. The case has been adjourned ahead of closing submissions to be heard in September. Off-duty NYPD officer fatally shoots man on Staten Island pointing fake gun
An off-duty New York Police Department officer fatally shot a man pointing a fake gun at the officer on Friday night on Staten Island, according to law enforcement. At about 8 p.m., a 911 call came in about a man with a gun at the back of a diner, Assistant Chief Melissa Eger, of the NYPD Patrol Borough of Staten Island, said during a news conference. An off-duty officer then spotted the same man with what appeared to be a firearm and told another off-duty officer, said Eger. They told the man to put the firearm down but instead he pointed it at the officers, said Eger, who added that surveillance video captured the events. One officer then fired at the man. The officers 'performed life-saving measures' and then the man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, she said. 'Our officers were confronted with a dangerous and unpredictable situation, and they attempted to de-escalate the situation multiple times,' she said. An imitation firearm was found at the scene, she said. The shooting is being investigated. She said the man has a criminal history, but the details were not immediately clear.

Sam Rimmer: Mum's plea to find e-bike riders who shot dead son in Liverpool three years ago
The mother of a man shot dead by attackers on electric bikes three years ago has appealed for help finding his killers. Sam Rimmer was shot in the back on 16 August 2022 when the bikes rode into Lavrock Bank in Liverpool and fired at him and his friends. The 22-year-old was injured and died a short while later in hospital. Ten people have been arrested since then but no charges have followed. Sam's mum, Joanne, said the last three years have been "agonising" and "the passing of time has not eased the pain". "People say to cherish the memories, but when I think of Sam, the memory I have is of his body in the morgue, staring at his chest, willing him to breathe. No parent should ever have to identify their child's body," she said. Joanne pleaded: "If you know something and you are reading this, please, please speak up. "No one will ever know as it will be completely anonymous. Sam was shot in his back. He was turned away from his killers. This image haunts me. In his final moments, was he scared? Was he in pain?" Detective Chief Inspector Steve McGrath, from Merseyside Police, said they "just need the final piece of the puzzle". "We know that there are people out there who live in the Dingle/Toxteth area who know who is responsible and my appeal is for those people to come forward and tell us what they know," he urged. "Do you know who was riding on the bikes that arrived in Lavrock Bank that night? Do you know where they went afterwards or where they are being stored?" He said any information would be handled carefully and "extensive measures" put in place to protect anyone who comes forward.
