Man charged with sex crimes after joint investigation in Bedford
BEDFORD, Va. (WFXR) – Bedford Police announced the arrest of a man on multiple felony charges on February 5 in connection to a child sex investigation.
Bedford PD said that a joint investigation with the Bedford Sheriff's Department has resulted in the arrest of Derek David Browning
Nine men arrested in Operation Joint Forces for sexual exploitation
After consulting with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office, Browning has been charged with the following:
Two counts of Forcible Sodomy
Indecent Liberties with a Minor
Penetration of Mouth of a Minor
Two counts of Aggravated Sexual Battery
Browning is currently being held at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail without bond.

Henry County car chase ends in drug arrest, one still at large
HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Henry County Sheriff's Office said a man and a woman wanted in Henry County on drug charges led deputies on a vehicle pursuit near Bassett on June 10. According to the sheriff, deputies attempted to pull over a green Ford Ranger pickup truck on the 1500 block of Stones Dairy Road around 4 p.m. on Tuesday when the driver, 25-year-old Brandee Taylor Feazelle of Collinsville, allegedly fled. Deputies began to pursue Feazelle down Stones Dairy Road before turning onto Jarrett Drive, the sheriff said. As the chase continued, deputies allegedly witnessed the passenger door being opened 'multiple' times, suggesting that one of the occupants may have been attempting to flee. Teen charged with robbery at Collinsville store, sheriff said The sheriff said that Feazelle then stopped the Ford Ranger behind a location at Jarrett Drive and exited the vehicle before allegedly attempting to flee on foot. James Shaffer, who was identified as the passenger in the front seat, also fled the scene into a wooded area behind a nearby trailer, according to the sheriff. Deputies also apprehended a third person who attempted to flee the scene; however, it was determined they had no outstanding warrants and were later released. A K9 Deputy responded to the scene and conducted a track to locate Shaffer, but the search was unsuccessful. Feazelle and Shaffer were both wanted on outstanding warrants. A search of the vehicle was then conducted, during which narcotics and drug paraphernalia were allegedly seized. Those items were collected and will be sent to the Virginia Department of Forensic Science Western Lab in Roanoke for testing. Three arrests made in Henry County homicides and human trafficking cases Brandee Taylor Feazelle has been arrested and charged with the following outstanding warrants: Possession of Schedule I or II Controlled Substances (Virginia Code Section §18.2-250) Probation Violation (Virginia Code Section §19.2-306) Additionally, Feazelle was charged with: Fail to Stop for Law Enforcement (Virginia Code Section§ 46.2-817) Loud Exhaust (Virginia Code Section §46.2-1049) Improper Tread Depth (Virginia Code Section§ 46.2-1043) Feazelle is currently being held at the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond. James William Shaffer is still wanted by the Henry County Sheriff for the following charges: Possession of a Schedule I/II Drug (Virginia Code Section § 18.2-250) Possession of a Schedule I/II Drug (Virginia Code Section § 18.2-250) The Henry County Sheriff said the investigation is ongoing. What are the differences between the Virginia missing persons alerts?
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR)—Over the past week, Southwest Virginia has seen several missing person alerts. The Commonwealth has 6 missing person alerts it sends out, each with its own criteria for how the Virginia state police is allowed to send them out. It all begins at the local level. 'The way the process works is that a local agency, let's say, Roanoke County Police, Roanoke City Police, Franklin County Sheriff's Office, they make a request of us when they have a missing person and then we issue the alert,' Matthew Demlein, the spokesperson for the Virginia State Police, said. Out of the 6, there are 2 alerts that may be difficult to distinguish: Amber and CODI alerts. Suspect accused of abducting 5-year-old Peyton Marie Knight in custody 'An amber alert, you have to believe an abduction has taken place, and a CODI alert doesn't involve an abduction. It is a child that has gone missing under such circumstances that their health and safety is believed to be at risk,' Demlein said. There are 4 other alerts VSP can send out: Blue Alert: Issued when police are searching for a missing officer, or looking for a suspect who killed or hurt an officer. Senior Alert: For anyone over the age of 60 with some kind of impairment, like dementia or alzheimers. A missing person with autism alert. Critically missing adult alert: For anyone over the 18 whose disappearance poses a credible threat to their safety. 'There are a number of these criteria, a number of steps in the process that have to be met for us to issue an alert,' Demlein said, 'We don't want to be in a situation where, you know, everything qualifies as an alert and then people start to tune them out.' CODI Alert cancelled after Salem teen found Demlein says, even if an alert is sent out hours or even days after a disappearance, VSP has already begun its search the moment a department reaches out to them. 'This is to help the public provide us with information, be another set of eyes to help us and local law enforcement, look for missing people and get them home safely,' Demlein said. One dead and one injured after head-on crash in Smyth County
SMYTH COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal two-car accident that occurred on Friday, June 6, around 9:34 a.m. on Route 16 near the Intersection with Old Prater Road in Smyth County. According to police, a Toyota Scion was traveling east on Route 16 and crossed the center line. A Dodge Ram 2500 was traveling west on Route 16 and attempted to avoid the Scion, but it crashed into the Dodge head-on. One dead and two injured after crash in Rockbridge County The driver of the Scion died on the scene and has yet to be identified. The driver of the Dodge was taken to the Smyth County Hospital with serios injuries. The crash remains under investigation. WFXR News will update this page when new information becomes available.
