15 new Hollywood movies to watch in summer 2025, from Superman and Smurfs to F1: The Movie

Summer is upon us once again, which in Hong Kong means an onslaught of heat and humidity matched only by what is lining up to be a torrent of sequels, remakes and bona fide blockbusters that will dominate cinema screens between now and the new school year. Advertisement Comedies, thrillers, spine-chillers and superhero extravaganzas will be duking it out for our attention, so here is our pick of 15 of the most promising offerings to open in Hong Kong this summer (opening dates are for Hong Kong). 1. F1: The Movie Director Joseph Kosinski follows Top Gun: Maverick with another tale of ageing thrill-seekers commanding incredibly expensive vehicles at impossibly high speeds. This time, Brad Pitt plays an over-the-hill Formula One driver who is recruited into Javier Bardem's struggling team alongside a hot-headed rookie (Damson Idris) in a high-octane drama made in collaboration with the sport's official governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile. (Opens on June 26) 2. M3GAN 2.0 After the surprise success of Blumhouse 's 2022 sci-fi horror satire M3GAN , the diminutive killer robot receives a notable upgrade in a sequel that promises to be bigger, stronger, faster and probably sillier than its predecessor.

How a young Turkish-German female chef in Hong Kong makes fine dining fun

'We never want to be too stiff. I don't want people to be scared to laugh or worried that they're talking too loudly,' says Mina Güçlüer, the new head chef at storied French restaurant Belon. 'I want to make sure everybody's having fun and eating good food at the same time.' It's a fitting declaration of intent, given that at only 29 years of age, her recent promotion makes her one of the youngest female chefs to helm a fine dining establishment in Hong Kong. Belon's head chef Mina Güçlüer rose through the ranks after joining the fine dining outlet in 2019. Photo: Jocelyn Tam The Turkish-German chef has experienced a rapid ascent, landing her first job out of school as a commis chef at the three-Michelin-starred Victor's Fine Dining by Christian Bau, in the German town of Nennig, before moving to the two-Michelin-starred Horváth in Berlin. 'I learned so much about what it means to work in fine dining,' recalls Güçlüer, 'and the amount of care that goes into the product. There's pretty much no room for error.' Having joined Belon in 2019, Güçlüer has risen through the ranks under chef Matthew Kirkley , and it shows. The new dishes she has debuted exhibit the same precision and eye for abstraction on the plate, tinged with a commensurate amount of nods to Belon's French roots. Why did you become a chef?

Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson, surf rock poet, dies at 82

Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys co-founder who masterminded the group's wild popularity and soundtracked the California dream, has died, his family announced on Wednesday. He was 82. Advertisement 'We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now,' said the statement published on Wilson's social media accounts. 'We realise that we are sharing our grief with the world.' The pop visionary crafted hits whose success rivalled The Beatles throughout the 1960s: between 1962 and 1966 a seemingly inexhaustible string of feel-good hits including 'Surfin' USA', 'I Get Around', 'Fun, Fun, Fun' and 'Surfer Girl' made the Beach Boys into America's biggest-selling band. But after five years of prodigious songwriting, in which he produced 200 odes to sun, surfing and sun-tanned girls, Wilson sank into a deep, drug-fuelled depression for decades. Advertisement He would emerge 35 years later to complete the Beach Boys' unfinished album, Smile, widely regarded as his masterpiece.
