Homa Carried His Bag for 36 Holes, and It Did Not End Well
Homa Carried His Bag for 36 Holes, and It Did Not End Well originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
POWELL, Ohio — The U.S. Open is a demanding test, but Max Homa made it even more challenging by carrying his own bag for the 36-hole qualifier at Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club outside of Columbus, Ohio.

To add insult to injury, the six-time PGA Tour winner carried his own bag, not just the 36 holes of the qualifier, but also an additional two holes in a five-for-one playoff for the final spot.
Homa was not interested in talking about why he decided to carry his own bag, but it was also clear that he had learned the value of a caddie.
'I haven't carried my bag 36 holes in a while, so I'm a little tired,' Homa said. 'When I missed the putt on the 18th around the last hole, it all kind of hit me. My legs are a little bit tired, but it's all right.'
That last putt was a 25-footer for eagle, but instead Homa tapped in for par after a three-putt on the par-5.

Yet Homa seemed to enjoy not having a voice in his ear as he walked with a carry bag on a perfect weather day.

'It seems to be better than when someone's sitting next to me, for some reason,' Homa said of the difference without a caddie. 'So, I might need to just walk by myself more. I don't know. Maybe I just looked at it as a nice, peaceful day by myself. Probably got to battle some demons and just have nobody to lean on.'
Homa split with longtime caddie Joe Greiner in March, at Greiner's request.
Veteran caddie Bill Harke was added to Homa's team and was on Homa's bag this past weekend at the Memorial. Homa's first-round 68 was by far his best, and he followed it up with 79-75-77 and a T51 finish.

Reading between the lines, Homa and Harke are no longer a team.
'I usually pull my own clubs for the most part anyway,' Homa said of the lack of indecision. 'It was a little hard in the beginning, not playing the golf course before the pins were super tricky. So, like not knowing the leaves, the second round was a lot easier.'
Homa missed a short putt for par on the first playoff hole and on the second four-putted, three of which were intentional. He will not be at Oakmont next week.
Giving Homa one last chance to confirm the caddie split, Homa was still unwilling to clear up the confusion.
'I wanted to carry for 36 holes,' was the final word for now on Homa and his caddie.

WNBA's Historic Announcement Means Bad News for Indiana Fever Star
WNBA's Historic Announcement Means Bad News for Indiana Fever Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's been a picture-perfect start to the 2025 season for the Minnesota Lynx. The defending Western Conference champs are showing no signs of slowing down, opening the year with an 8-0 record. Advertisement Their latest victory came Tuesday night in a dominant 88-65 home decision over the Phoenix Mercury. Minnesota has shown great balance, but one player continues to stand out: Kayla McBride. The sharpshooter stretches defenses and creates problems from beyond the arc. On Tuesday, the WNBA spotlighted McBride with this post: "A threat from beyond the arc! With her 3rd triple tonight vs. the Mercury, Kayla McBride officially moves into 8th on the All-Time 3PM List! While that's great news for McBride, it represents unfortunate timing for another veteran: Indiana Fever forward DeWanna Bonner. Bonner had a quiet night in Indiana's 85-76 win over the Washington Mystics, scoring just nine points in 20 minutes. She hit one 3-pointer but saw McBride go past her on the all-time 3-pointer list when the Lynx star hit three treys. Advertisement Meanwhile, McBride was one of four Lynx players in double figures. She put up 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting, added seven assists and pulled down four rebounds. She has played for three franchises and spent several offseasons playing overseas. Her climb up the WNBA's all-time 3-point list puts her in elite company. She now trails Kristi Toliver by 21 makes. To tie sixth-place Katie Douglas, she needs 97 more threes. To move into fifth ahead of Tina Thompson, she needs 119. Red Sox Trade of Jarren Duran Would 'Make Sense' According to Jim Bowden
Red Sox Trade of Jarren Duran Would 'Make Sense' According to Jim Bowden originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Diego Padres are interested in trading for Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran. One year ago, the Padres also expressed interest in the Red Sox outfielder. The Duran trade rumors have been around for over a year, and now they are starting back up. Advertisement During a segment on Foul Territory, former MLB executive Jim Bowden talked about the Duran trade rumors and his view of their legitimacy. While he doesn't believe Duran will be traded to the Padres, he does see a move of Duran making sense. "Trading Duran makes sense," Bowden said. "It would not surprise me at all if Craig Breslow, GM of the Red Sox, plans to trade Duran, because otherwise, why haven't they made room for Anthony?" A large reason why Bowden believes a move of Duran makes sense is to make room for the number one overall prospect, Roman Anthony. Duran and Anthony are both outfielders, and to make room for Anthony, Bowden believes trading Duran is a solution. Advertisement Not only does he believe trading Duran makes sense, but he also sees Craig Breslow as capable of trading Duran to make room for Anthony. While Duran has ingrained himself into the Red Sox fandom, the Red Sox could look to move him in favor of Anthony. Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran (16) hits a double against the New York Mets during the fourth inning at Fenway Canha-Imagn Images Another factor at play is Ceddane Rafaela likely keeping his spot in center field. Despite his poor offensive numbers, the Red Sox "love Rafaela defensively," according to Bowden. The Red Sox also won't move off Gold Glove winner Wilyer Abreu, especially after his hot start offensively to the 2025 season. That leaves Rafaela and Duran as the two most likely spots for Anthony to take over when he's called up. Advertisement With the Red Sox's infatuation with Rafaela's defense and the rumors surrounding Duran picking up steam, all signs point towards a Duran trade. Bowden saying a trade makes sense, and that he wouldn't be surprised if Breslow moved Duran, are two strong indicators that MLB personnel also believe Duran is available. The Duran rumors have picked up drastically in the matter over a few hours on Monday, June 2nd. While no trade discussions have been reported, and nothing is close to being done, the Duran trade rumors are real and could materialize quickly. Geno Smith Delivers Clear Maxx Crosby Statement at Raiders OTAs
Geno Smith Delivers Clear Maxx Crosby Statement at Raiders OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders have completely revamped their offense this year under new general manager John Spytek and head coach Pete Carroll. In March, the team sent a third-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for veteran quarterback Geno Smith. Advertisement Smith will be the starter under center instead of Aidan O'Connell or Gardner Minshew, who helped the team win just four games in 2024. He already has a rapport with coach Pete Carroll as well, considering the two spent four seasons together in Seattle. When Smith faced the Raiders in 2022, the Seahawks put up 34 points thanks to his 27-for-37 passing performance in which he racked up 328 yards and two touchdowns. He also got sacked three times, however, 1.5 of which came from star edge rusher Maxx Crosby. Las Vegas Raiders QB Geno Smith (7).Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images Last Thursday, Smith talked to the media after a Raiders OTA workout. He spoke glowingly about Crosby and what it means to be playing with him now instead of against him. Advertisement "Maxx is a great player, I got to know him a little bit more at the Pro Bowl a few years back," Smith said. "One of the hardest working guys I've ever seen. One of the guys who's more committed to football than anyone. He loves the game, you can tell he's passionate about it, and he's got a great leadership style. ... He's a special player, man. It's great to have him on my side." Crosby is coming off an underwhelming season, as he mustered only 7.5 sacks in an injury-riddled campaign. He missed five games during the 2024 NFL season as well, which marked the first time in his career that he has missed a contest. Still, he managed 17 tackles for loss and 20 quarterback hits, as well as 45 total tackles. With, hopefully, a healthy defensive line room surrounding him this year, Crosby should be able to take both his game and the Raiders' defense to new heights. This can only help Smith, who is looking to revitalize the Las Vegas offense as well after a brutal 2024 season in which they averaged just under 18.2 points per game.
