Israel says missile launched from Yemen was intercepted

Al Arabiya3 days ago
The Israeli military said Thursday that a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted after air raid sirens sounded in several areas across the country.
The Iran-aligned Houthi militia, which controls the most populous parts of Yemen, has been firing on Israel and attacking shipping lanes.
The Houthi armed group has said its attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, where Israel's military campaign since late 2023 has killed more than 57,000 people, according to Gaza authorities.
Most of the dozens of missiles and drones launched have either been intercepted or fallen short. Israel has conducted a series of retaliatory strikes in response.

Pakistan minister to attend tomorrow tri-nation conference in Tehran on pilgrim, border issues

KARACHI: Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is undertaking an official visit to Tehran to attend a tri-nation conference on pilgrim and border issues, the Pakistani interior ministry said on Sunday. The conference of interior ministers from Pakistan, Iran and Iraq is being convened on a request from Islamabad, according to the Pakistani interior ministry. Thousands of Pakistani Shiite Muslims, who travel annually to Iran and Iraq to visit holy sites, have often complained of issues at the border. 'Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi will attend the trilateral conference on pilgrims and border issues in Tehran tomorrow,' the Pakistani interior ministry said on Sunday. 'Naqvi will also meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.' Last month, Pakistan evacuated over 260 nationals from Iraq and another 450 Pakistanis who had been stranded in Iran during the Tehran-Israeli conflict. The 12-day war between Iran and Israel, which began on June 13 Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and military leadership, raised alarms in a region that was already on edge since the start of Israel's war on Gaza in October 2023. Pakistan remained engaged in talks with regional partners like Saudi Arabia, Iran, China and Qatar to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East after Iran conducted retaliatory strikes on Israel and a US base in Qatar, raising fears the conflict could draw in other regional states.

Russia slams report it backed ‘zero enrichment' Iran nuclear deal

Russia's foreign affairs ministry on Sunday described reports claiming that President Vladimir Putin had encouraged his Iranian ally to accept a 'zero enrichment' agreement on its nuclear program as 'defamation.' US news outlet Axios reported on Saturday, citing three anonymous sources familiar with the matter, that Putin had 'encouraged' Iran to accept a deal with the United States that would prevent the Islamic republic from enriching uranium. The article 'appears to be a new political defamation campaign aimed at exacerbating tensions around Iran's nuclear program,' the Russian ministry of foreign affairs said on Sunday. 'Invariably and repeatedly, we have emphasized the necessity of resolving the crisis concerning Iran's nuclear program exclusively through political and diplomatic means, and expressed our willingness to help find mutually acceptable solutions,' the statement read. Tehran is suspected by Western countries and Israel of seeking to develop an atomic bomb, which it denies, defending its 'non-negotiable' right to develop a civilian nuclear program. Moscow has a cordial relationship with Iran's clerical leadership and provides crucial backing for Tehran but did not swing forcefully behind its partner even after the United States joined Israel's bombing campaign in June. Publicly, Moscow has defended Tehran's right to use nuclear technology for civilian purposes but in recent months, Putin has also drawn closer to US President Donald Trump. On June 13, Israel launched an unprecedented attack on Iran, triggering a 12-day war. The conflict halted negotiations initiated in April between Tehran and Washington to frame Iran's nuclear program in exchange for lifting economic sanctions against Iran. On June 22, the United States bombed the underground uranium enrichment site at Fordo, south of Tehran, and nuclear facilities in Isfahan and Natanz. The exact extent of the damage is not known.

Japan Embassy in Riyadh partners with IOM to fund Yemen youth training

RIYADH: Japanese Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Yoichi Nakashima partnered with the International Organization for Migration to grant about $2.5 million in aid supporting vocational training for youth, including internally displaced persons in Yemen. Signing the exchange notes in Riyadh on Sunday alongside Nakashima were Ashraf El Nour, head of the IOM office in Riyadh, and Mansour Bajash, undersecretary for political affairs at Yemen's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Japanese envoy told Arab News that this cooperation is critical given the ongoing economic difficulties in Yemen, saying: 'We made this decision to support the Yemeni people who are going through this exceptional time and to address urgently needed areas such as vocational training.' He explained that Yemen faces rising unemployment due to the prolonged conflict. The country's public technical and vocational training centers have significantly reduced their operations due to infrastructure damage and lack of funds. Approximately 4.7 million IDPs — about one-seventh of the population — are unable to earn an income because they lack technical skills, making employment difficult. Nakashima highlighted that this agreement may benefit a large number of people, especially IDPs, who are particularly affected by the situation. This cooperation aims to rehabilitate technical and vocational training centers and provide capacity development training in three southern governorates: Aden, Lahj, and Taiz. It is also expected to help increase employment opportunities for young people by expanding vocational training and enhancing economic resources. A joint press statement from the embassies of Japan and Yemen noted that supporting peace and stability in Yemen, which borders the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, will contribute to securing sea lanes. The government of Japan expressed its commitment to continue working proactively toward achieving peace and stability in Yemen, in cooperation with the UN and relevant countries.
