Connacht suffer worst away defeat of season to Lions in South Africa

URC: Emirates Lions 26 Connacht 7
Connacht
suffered their worst away defeat of the season, losing to a struggling South African outfit Emirates Lions in this
URC
basement battle in Johannesburg.
'We did not show the best side of ourselves,' said captain Cian Prendergast. 'Not smart with the ball, not smart with our energy management in the Highveld. The tour sums our season.'
The home side, having dictated the opening half, were first to score after 13 minutes. Dominating the early exchanges, it was their pack, as expected, which led the charge through their set piece, giving them sufficient front-foot ball. On an advantage, the home side recycled the ball and eventually flanker Renzo du Plessis slipped through a porous cover to score.

Connacht, with few opportunities to attack, were unable to make a dent on the scoreline as they struggled on an unusually heavy pitch in the Highveld.
Connacht did well to stymie another possible Lions try just before the break with solid defence of a rolling maul, but a penalty from outhalf Kade Wolhuter kept the home side in the driving seat, adding a second penalty from the scrum with Wolhuter stretching the lead to 11.
Connacht turned around in the second half and immediately took some control, winning a penalty with Lions' flanker Du Plessis yellow carded. And when Dylan Tierney Martin touched down from driving maul, Connacht looked to have turned the corner, but the try was denied by a technical infringement in the preceding maul.
By the 60th minute and Connacht still scoreless, the Lions struck again through leftwing Edwill van der Merwe, but it was also struck out due a previous high tackle on David Hawkshaw by centre Henco Van Wyk.
It made little difference for Connacht, who continued to struggle with both physicality of their opponents and the environment, leaking a second try when number eight Jarod Cairns delivered to flanker JC Pretorious who stretched the lead to 19-0.
There was no coming back for Connacht when they leaked a third, scored by Van Der Merwe, their late try by Eoin de Buitlear of little consolation.

'A big blow to hopes,' says coach Cullie Tucker. 'We were aiming to get four or five points, still technically in the hunt. Lineout, ruck and attack – those three areas were not as good and it affected our ability to build pressure. Giving away too many penalties in the first half.
'Frustrated with the result and performance, not the group. Altitude was a factor, but we could have managed it a bit better.'

Leinster confirm venue for October clash with Munster

Leinster have confirmed that next season's URC clash with Munster will be hosted at Croke Park. With the RDS under redevelopment, Leinster are using Aviva Stadium and Croke Park as their home grounds. Last year's derby was also held at GAA HQ, where over 80,000 spectators watched the home side earn a 26-12 victory. The derby will once again be held at Croke Park. Pic: Sam Barnes/Sportsfile James Lowe, Caelan Doris, Hugo Keenan and RG Snyman all went over the line as they saw off Munster on the big occasion. The fixture will take place in round four on Saturday 18 October at 5.15pm, with tickets going on sale to the public on 29 August. The champions are away to Stormers and Bulls in their opening two fixtures before hosting Sharks in Aviva Stadium on 11 October. Leo Cullen's side earned their first piece of silverware since 2021 in June when they cruised to a 32-7 victory over the Bulls in the URC final. Leinster have said that they will return to the RDS for the start of the 2026/27 season. They will play most of their home games this season at the Aviva with some games designated for Croke Park. Leinster won the fixture last year 26-12. Pic: INPHO/Dan Sheridan After the first five rounds of the URC, there will be a break ahead of the Autumn Series for Ireland against New Zealand, Japan, Australia and South Africa. Before the public sale of tickets for the Munster clash, there will be a window for current Leinster Rugby season ticket holders to upgrade their tickets. This is the same process as would have applied to previous Munster games being hosted at the Aviva Stadium, rather than the RDS. Once Leinster's season ticket holders have had a window to access tickets, the remaining tickets will then go on sale to the public. Leinster and Munster set to lock horns in October URC match at Croke Park

LEINSTER WILL ONCE again host Munster in the BKT United Rugby Championship derby match at Croke Park on Saturday, 18 October (KO: 5.15pm). Leinster are once again playing URC and Champions Cup games outside of the RDS Arena this season, as the RDS Arena is undergoing redevelopment work. Advertisement As a result, the majority of Leinster's home fixtures in the 2025/26 season will be played at the Aviva Stadium, with a number of games also designated for Croke Park. Leinster will be back at the RDS Arena for the start of the 2026/27 season, meanwhile tickets for the Munster match will go on public sale on 29 August. The two teams played in Croke Park last October, while Leinster won the URC final at Croke Park in June against the Bulls. Leinster start the URC 2025/26 season with a two-game assignment in South Africa, with the DHL Stormers first up in Cape Town on 26 September, followed by a game eight days later against the Vodacom Bulls on 4 October 2025. The first home game of the season will be against the Hollywoodbets Sharks at Aviva Stadium on 11 October (KO: 5.30pm), followed by the visit of Munster to Jones' Road a week later. Leinster play a third game in-a-row at home against Zebre Parma on 25 October at Aviva Stadium (KO: 5.30pm). After the first five rounds of the URC, there will be a break ahead of the Autumn Series for Ireland against New Zealand, Japan, Australia and South Africa, before the URC resumes for Round 6 and a trip to Rodney Parade against Dragons RFC on 28 November.

Leinster and Munster to resume rivalry at Croke Park early in the new URC season

Leinster and Munster will lock horns again at Croke Park early in the new BKT URC season. Reigning champs Leinster won the meeting of the sides at GAA HQ last October, with a record 80,468 crowd for a URC game seeing the hosts claim a 26-12 victory as they outscored their rivals by four tries to two. It was the first meeting of the provinces at the iconic stadium since their 2009 Heineken Cup semi-final, also won by Leinster. With the RDS Arena still being redeveloped - Leinster will return there for the start of the 2026/27 season - the province will be playing at the Aviva Stadium and Croke Park again next season and the latest meeting of the blues and the reds takes place on Saturday, October 18 (5.15pm). The round 4 interpro will be Leinster's first trip back to Croke Park since the BKT URC Grand Final against the Vodacom Bulls in June, which Leinster won 32-7. Leinster have also released details of their early season programme, kicking off with a two-game assignment in South Africa against the Stormers (Friday, 26 September) and the Bulls (Saturday, 4 October). The first home game of the season will be against the Sharks at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, 11 October (5.30pm), followed by the visit of Munster Rugby to Jones's Road a week later. Leinster play a third game in-a-row at home against Zebre on Saturday, 25 October at the Aviva Stadium (5.30pm).
