Kuwait State Communication Affairs Min.: AI Center product of Microsoft partnership

General
KUWAIT, Aug 7 (KUNA) -- Minister of State for Communication Affairs Omar Al-Omar said on Thursday that Kuwait Oil Company's (KOC) new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center is the first concrete result of Kuwait's strategic partnership with Microsoft.
At the opening in KOC's Ahmadi headquarters-- attended by Minister of Oil Tareq Al-Roumi, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sheikh Nawaf Saud Al-Sabah, and Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA) Director General Sheikh Dr. Meshaal Jaber Al-Sabah -- Al-Omar said in a statement that the facility would weave advanced AI tools into KOC's daily technical work, saving time, effort and money.
Officials hope to replicate this model across other sectors, he added.
Meanwhile, President of Microsoft for Middle East and Africa (MEA) Naim Yazbeck called the launch a historic turning point in Kuwait's drive toward a knowledge-based economy.
He said Microsoft recently expanded its Kuwait presence because it trusts the country's potential and is committed to supporting a full digital transformation.
The partnership, he noted, focuses on training Kuwaiti talent, developing tailored AI solutions and using data analytics to sharpen real-time decisions that improve production and transport networks, with KDIPA's support.
Yazbeck underlined that the center is more than a training lab; it is an integrated platform for future innovation, operational excellence and sustainability, designed to equip young Kuwaiti professionals with cutting-edge skills.
Engineers demonstrated the first major project - an AI system that schedules drilling rigs in real time, instantly analyzes operational data and offers predictive recommendations.
Executives say the tool will cut costs, boost productivity and advance the country's New Kuwait 2035 vision.
Overall, the center aims to accelerate AI adoption across KOC, reduce operating costs, improve decision-making and keep Kuwait's energy sector aligned with global technological trends. (pickup previous) km.lr

KAPP: Cost of Al-Zour North Power Plant project exceeds KD one bln

KUWAIT, Aug 10 (KUNA) -- Acting Director General of Kuwait Authority for Partnership Project (KAPP), Asmaa Al-Mousa, confirmed on Sunday that the cost of the second and third phases of the Al-Zour North Power Plant Project exceeds one billion Kuwaiti dinars (approximately USD 3.3 billion). This came in a press statement by Al-Mousa on the sidelines of the signing of the commitment document for implementing phases two and three of the Al-Zour North Power Plant Project, in cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, and a consortium that includes ACWA Power company and the Gulf Investment Corporation. She stated that the project enjoys financial support from a group of local and international banks, reflecting the high level of confidence in the investment and partnership environment in Kuwait. Al-Mousa pointed out that the project will be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) system, clarifying that the foreign investor's share will amount to 40 percent, while 50 percent of the project will be allocated to citizens, and 10 percent to public entities eligible to invest in such projects. She noted that this project reflects the government's direction towards involving the private sector in infrastructure development and leveraging its expertise in design, implementation, and operation contributing to reduced costs, accelerated completion, and optimal use of natural resources, as well as attracting foreign investments and financing major development projects within the country. Al-Mousa explained that a public joint-stock company will be established, and partnership contracts will be signed to commence design, construction, and operation works. The company will be listed on the Kuwait Stock Exchange once it begins its commercial operations, expected in mid-2028. (end)

Kuwait announces visa on arrival for GCC residents

KUWAIT: First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah has announced new visa regulations making it easier for foreigners residing in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to visit Kuwait. Under Ministerial Decision No. 1386 of 2025, which was published on Sunday in the official gazette Kuwait Al-Youm and takes effect immediately, eligible GCC residents can now obtain a tourist visa directly upon arrival at Kuwaiti ports of entry. According to the decision, applicants must hold a residence permit in a GCC country valid for at least six months to qualify for the visa-on-arrival facility. The move repeals Decision No. 1228 of 2008, which previously governed the entry of GCC residents into Kuwait under similar provisions. The Ministry of Interior stated that the new regulation aligns with Decree Law No. 114 of 2024 concerning the residence of foreigners. The undersecretary of the ministry has been tasked with implementing the new decision, aimed at facilitating tourism and strengthening Kuwait's ties with neighboring Gulf states.

Kuwait signs $3.27 billion deal for Al-Zour North power plant expansion

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 10: The Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP) signed contracts on Sunday with Saudi-based ACWA Power and the Gulf Investment Corporation for the second and third phases of the Al-Zour North power and water desalination plant. The total value of the expansion exceeds 1 billion Kuwaiti dinars (approximately $3.27 billion), according to KAPP Director General Mutlaq Al-Sanei, who told Reuters that the financial burden will be fully carried by the investors, not the government. Sunday's signing marks the official launch of one of Kuwait's largest electricity and water infrastructure undertakings, aimed at alleviating the country's ongoing power shortages. Once completed, the expanded Al-Zour North facility will generate 2.7 gigawatts of electricity and produce 120 million gallons of water per day. The plant will utilize combined-cycle technology, and construction is expected to take approximately three years.
