SINGAPORE – Even Mother Monster cannot resist sampling some of Singapore's local makan.
According to photos and videos posted on social media platforms like Xiaohongshu on May 20, American pop star Lady Gaga was spotted having lunch at Maxwell Food Centre in Chinatown, during a break between her four National Stadium concerts.
Fully clad in black, the 39-year-old was seated with her entourage and her fiance, American entrepreneur Michael Polansky, at a table in front of the Fortune Popiah stall.
As she was leaving the famed hawker centre, she stopped briefly to sign an eager male fan's vinyl of her new album Mayhem, before her team escorted her into a black limousine. A small group of onlookers had gathered by then, with some screaming her name and cheering.
In November 2024, British-Albanian pop star Dua Lipa – who staged two concerts at the Singapore Indoor Stadium – also visited Maxwell Food Centre before taking to Instagram to reminisce about the slate of local delights she had shared with her crew.
Lady Gaga is in town for a run of Asia-exclusive shows to promote Mayhem on May 18, 19, 21 and 24.
A bevy of celebrities were spotted at her earlier two sets, including K-pop girl group Babymonster, Hong Kong actress Gigi Leung, Malaysian actress Angelica Lee, Taiwanese singer Elva Hsiao, Taiwanese actress Joe Chen and veteran Hong Kong actor Simon Yam.

Oasis ‘shocked' by death of fan at London concert

LONDON - The death of a man at an Oasis concert on Aug 2 in London has cast a pall over the long-awaited reunion tour of the 1990s Britpop band, which began with fanfare in July. The concertgoer, whose name was not released, apparently fell from the upper tiers of Wembley Stadium about the time the show was winding down, based on initial assessments. 'We are shocked & saddened to hear of the tragic death of a fan at the show last night,' the band said on Aug 3 in a statement that was reported by British news media. 'Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved.' The band played another concert at Wembley on Aug 3, their last show in London in August. The band's management company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Metropolitan Police said that officers working at the stadium, medics and ambulance service workers responded to reports of an injury around 10.20pm. The concertgoer was in his 40s and had 'injuries consistent with a fall', the police said in a statement. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities were seeking information from the public to help them determine what happened. 'We believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage,' the police statement said. Top stories Swipe. The seating is divided into three levels, with those in the highest tier situated about 50m above ground. Some people who said they had been at the show posted about the death on social media. A person posting on Reddit as 'Nickibee' described being seated in the top tier, and said the floors were extremely wet and slippery from spilled drinks – 'like an ice rink'. Other attendees said the floors in the middle and upper tiers were also treacherous. Some noted that the timing of the man's death coincided with the end of the concert, when people might have been rushing out. Oasis have sold out their shows at Wembley and beyond. The concert on Aug 2 was the fourth of five performances scheduled there for this leg of the tour, and the band are to return for two more shows on Sept 27 and 28 Oasis were formed in 1991 in Manchester, England. The band were part of a 1990s movement called Britpop, joining groups like Blur and Pulp in producing catchy rock music with a 1960s influence. From 1994 to 2007, they produced seven albums. The band had not performed together since 2009, when Noel Gallagher, the lead guitarist, songwriter and singer, quit the group, declaring that he could no longer stand to work with Liam Gallagher, the lead singer and his brother. The Gallagher brothers' online feuding appeared to play a role in the band's continued following after it broke up. The death at Wembley on Aug 2 appears to have been the first such fatality at that arena. In 2022, a Harry Styles fan fell from the top deck of Glasgow's Ibrox Stadium but was not seriously injured. Wembley Stadium did not immediately respond to a request for comment. NYTIMES Alex Marshall and Victor Mather contributed reporting.

Loni Anderson, star of ‘WKRP in Cincinnati,' dies at 79

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Loni Anderson, who played the platinum blonde receptionist on the screwball comedy 'WKRP in Cincinnati' in the late 1970s and early '80s and later became a tabloid mainstay during her contentious divorce from actor Burt Reynolds, died Aug 3 at a hospital in Los Angeles. She was 79. Her death, just days before her 80th birthday, was confirmed by Cheryl Kagan, her publicist, who cited an unspecified prolonged illness. Loni Kaye Anderson was born Aug 5, 1945, in St Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Klaydon Carl Anderson, a chemist, and Maxine Kallin, a model. As a young woman, Anderson's fresh face, dimples and big, sparkling eyes epitomised the American beauty standards of her time. She got her start in acting on television shows in the mid-1970s. Her big break came in 1978 when she was cast as Jennifer Marlowe, a receptionist, on 'WKRP in Cincinnati'. The show, which aired on CBS from 1978 to 1982, was about an easy-listening local radio station in Cincinnati that switched to a rock format. Her role earned her three Golden Globe nominations as well as two Emmy Award nominations. She later appeared in two episodes of a sequel, 'The New WKRP in Cincinnati', which aired from 1991 to 1993. 'I was against being like a blonde window dressing person, so I made my feelings known,' she said on Australian television in 2017. 'And as we know, Jennifer was the smartest person in the room.' 'She just turned into a great groundbreaking kind of character for women to be glamorous and smart,' Anderson added. Her trademark blond locks were not her natural hair color, and she initially had conflicted feelings about them. Anderson had been a brunette for most of her life, including during her early acting career, and worried that she would not be taken seriously as an actress if she dyed her hair. 'I was very much on the fence about it,' she said in the interview. She entered into a relationship with actor Burt Reynolds, who would become her third husband, in 1982 when they were filming 'Stroker Ace', a comedy surrounding car racing. Anderson played a 'rather sweet, Marilyn Monroe-like turn as a virginal public relations woman' who was the love interest of Reynolds' character, according to The New York Times' review of the film. The couple married in 1988 and adopted a son, Quinton Reynolds. The union ended in 1993, in one of the most acrimonious splits Hollywood had seen, and one that would serve as tabloid filler for decades to come, with both Reynolds and Anderson jabbing at each other over the years in interviews. In 2015, the gossip website TMZ reported that Reynolds had finally paid off his settlement to Anderson. 'It was one of the longest and nastiest divorces in Hollywood history,' the website wrote. 'The truth is,' Reynolds wrote in a memoir released that same year, 'I never did like her.' The two seemed to have patched things up before Reynolds' death in 2018. 'We were friends first and friends last,' Anderson said in 2019. 'It's time to move on.' In 2008, Anderson married her fourth husband, musician Bob Flick, who was a founding member of the 1960s folk group the Brothers Four. The pair had met more than four decades prior, as part of a fan photo opportunity for Flick's band on May 17, 1963. Exactly 45 years later, they cut into a wedding cake decorated with that first photo of them. In addition to Quinton Reynolds and Flick, Anderson is survived by her daughter, Deidra Hoffman, her stepson, Adam Flick, two granddaughters and two step-grandchildren. NYTIMES

American Eagle Outfitters defends controversial Sydney Sweeney jeans ad

NEW YORK – American Eagle Outfitters defended its media campaign featuring American actress Sydney Sweeney following criticism that the ads have racist undertones. The spot 'is and always was about the jeans', the company said in a post on Instagram. American Eagle said it will 'continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way'. The apparel retailer launched an ad blitz last week with the tagline 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans'. One of the campaign's videos plays on the same-sounding word 'genes' as Sweeney, 27, zips up her jeans and intones that 'genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour'. 'My jeans are blue,' the star of drama series like Euphoria (2019 to present) and The White Lotus (2021) adds, flashing her blue eyes at the camera. Billboards of actress Sydney Sweeney are seen outside of an American Eagle store on Aug 1, 2025 in New York City. When the campaign was initially unveiled on July 23, American Eagle shares rose. 'I think this is potentially one of the biggest gets in American Eagle history,' chief marketing officer Craig Brommers, said in an interview with Women's Wear Daily on July 23. 'Sydney Sweeney is the 'It' girl of the moment, and she is helping us create the 'It' jeans campaign of the season,' he added. PHOTO: AFP Data from Bloomberg Second Measure data, which tracks debit and credit card transactions from US consumers, has not shown any immediate impact on sales at American Eagle. Analysts are closely watching spending at the retailer during the important back-to-school season. Some shoppers might be turned off by the ad campaign and the noise around it, said Ms Jessica Ramirez, managing director at retail analysis firm the Consumer Collective, and opt to shop at competitors such as Levi Strauss & Co, Abercrombie & Fitch or Gap. 'There are other options out there,' she said. JPMorgan analyst Matthew Boss recently cut his recommendation for American Eagle to underweight from neutral, saying that the market's expectations for earnings are too high. The company is looking to bounce back after pulling its 2025 outlook and a charge of US$75 million (S$96.7 million) related to the writedown of merchandise. BLOOMBERG
