Shell shares climbed Friday after the energy giant posted stronger-than-expected quarterly results and announced a $3.5 billion share buyback program.
The company said its $3.5 billion buyback plan, the same as in the fourth quarter of 2024, marked its 14th consecutive quarter of authorizing at least $3 billion in share repurchases.

Shell posted first-quarter adjusted earnings of $5.58 billion, or $0.92 per share, beating expectations from analysts polled by Visible Alpha.
The company said its $3.5 billion buyback plan, the same as in the fourth quarter of 2024, marked its 14th consecutive quarter of authorizing at least $3 billion in share repurchases.
'Our strong performance and resilient balance sheet give us the confidence to commence another $3.5 billion of buybacks for the next three months, consistent with the strategic direction we set out at our Capital Markets Day in March,' Shell CEO Wael Sawan said.
Like rival BP (BP), Shell is in the midst of pivoting away from a low-carbon strategy. These results are its first since it said in March at its capital markets day that it would grow its upstream and integrated gas business by 1% annually through 2030. Unlike Shell, however, BP cut its first-quarter share buybacks amid economic uncertainty.
Shell shares rose about 3% in early trading Friday and have added about 6% since the start of the year.

After 12 months, a £5,000 investment in these 2 UK shares could be worth…

Despite being some of the most mature UK shares on the London Stock Exchange, some FTSE 100 companies still have plenty of growth to offer. That certainly seems to be the case for two such businesses when looking at the latest analyst forecasts. Shell (LSE:SHEL) and International Consolidated Airlines (LSE:IAG) are projected to deliver some pretty robust gains over the next 12 months. And if these projections prove accurate, an equal-weighted investment into this basket of businesses could generate 23.4%. This means a £5,000 investment today could be transformed into £6,170 by June next year. By comparison, if the FTSE 100 index generates its usual 8% return, passive index fund investors would only enjoy £5,400. Of course, forecasts aren't set in stone and are built on a series of assumptions that may not come to pass. So let's dive a bit deeper into what's driving analyst optimism and what risks investors may face. There's a lot to like about IAG in 2025. Revenue and operating profits have fully recovered from their pandemic lows and have even gone on to surpass pre-pandemic records. The firm's debt has started falling, and with management modernising its fleet to be more fuel efficient, free cash flow generation's on the rise. These higher profit margins have paved the way for large share repurchasing programmes, and with transatlantic travel trends still heading upwards, investor sentiment has increased significantly. Analysts at JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank have both upgraded their forecasts and issued Buy recommendations. Needless to say, superior financials in a period of rising demand are an excellent sign for investors. However, even bullish analysts have highlighted potential threats. Geopolitical events may indirectly impact operations, most notably through oil prices that could potentially send fuel costs surging. The downward trend in oil & gas prices over the last 12 months has been a bit of a boon since it lowers IAG's fuel costs. But should that trend decide to reverse, margin pressure could once again emerge if the company's unable to pass the cost onto customers. A return to higher oil & gas prices would definitely be welcomed by Shell, creating a bit of a diversification benefit to this basket. Despite the recent weakness in fossil fuels, the energy titan has performed better than what most analysts initially expected. And when paired with its planned expansion of liquefied natural gas production along with cost-cutting initiatives, analyst sentiment's also improving for Shell. However, it's important to note the firm's facing increasing pressure from activist investors regarding its slow transition to renewables. In the 2024 annual general meeting, almost 21% of shareholders voted against its updated climate strategy, surpassing the group's mandated threshold to further consult with shareholders and potentially reconsider. A failure to address activist investor concerns in future annual meetings could impede management's strategy or, in the worst-case scenario, trigger a change of leadership. In either scenario, Shell's share price performance could fall short of expectations. Nevertheless, both of these businesses appear to offer promising potential right now. Therefore, investors looking for UK shares to buy may want to consider exploring these opportunities further. BP expands oil and gas interests in Azerbaijan with new deals

BP and its partners have sanctioned a new phase of development for the Shah Deniz gas field and gained access to two new exploration blocks in Azerbaijan. The agreements, which also include terminal electrification and solar power projects, signal bp's commitment to growth and emissions reduction in the region. During Baku Energy Week, bp, in collaboration with its partners, finalised investment decisions for the Shah Deniz Compression project, which is set to enhance the production capabilities of the giant Shah Deniz gas field. BP EVP for production & operations Gordon Birrell said: 'We are deeply proud of the long and successful partnership that bp has built with Azerbaijan over more than 30 years. As can be seen by the agreements we signed this week, we continue to see many opportunities for further development and growth. As we deliver our strategy of growing our upstream, we will build on our strong positions in regions like Azerbaijan, and on the deep relationships we have with the government and our partners.' Additionally, bp has committed to two sustainability-focused projects aimed at reducing operational emissions through terminal electrification and solar power initiatives. The agreements also allow bp to explore and potentially develop two new licences in the Caspian Sea, further cementing its presence in Azerbaijan. BP has also introduced a new partner to expedite exploration activities on a third licence. For more than three decades, the energy giant has played a pivotal role in Azerbaijan's oil and gas sector. The company led the development and operation of key projects including the Azeri-Chirag-Deepwater Gunashli oilfield, the Shah Deniz gas field and the Sangachal terminal. BP's involvement extends to the Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline and the Southern Gas Corridor gas pipeline network. The Shah Deniz Compression project is one of eight to ten major projects bp expects to begin between 2028 and 2030. The project is set to contribute to an increase in bp's global upstream production to 2.3–2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (mboe/d) by 2030, with potential for further growth until 2035, all within bp's financial framework. In addition to project approvals, the company has finalised an agreement with SOCAR, acquiring a 35% working interest and operatorship in two blocks in the Caspian Sea, the Karabagh oilfield and the Ashrafi-Dan Ulduzu-Aypara area, with SOCAR holding the remaining 65%. The partnership has also greenlighted the Shafag solar and Sangachal terminal electrification projects, linking sustainable energy development with operational advancements. SOCAR has also inked fresh deals with ExxonMobil and bp for hydrocarbon exploration in Azerbaijan, aiming to maintain the nation's oil production at around 582,000 barrels per day for the next five years. Such forward-looking statements are based on Dassault Systèmes management's current views and assumptions and involve known and unknown risks and uncertainties. Actual results or performances may differ materially from those in such statements due to a range of Group's actual results or performance may be materially negatively affected by numerous risks and uncertainties, as described in the 'Risk Factors' section 1.9 of the 2024 Universal Registration Document ('Document d'enregistrement universel') filed with the AMF (French Financial Markets Authority) on March 18, 2025, available on the Group's website particular, please refer to the risk factor 'Uncertain Global Environment' in section 1.9.1.1 of the 2024 Universal Registration Document set out below for ease of reference: 'In light of the uncertainties regarding economic, business, social, health and geopolitical conditions at the global level, Dassault Systèmes' revenue, net earnings and cash flows may grow more slowly, whether on an annual or quarterly basis, mainly due to the following factors: the deployment of Dassault Systèmes' solutions may represent a large portion of a customer's investments in software technology. Decisions to make such an investment are impacted by the economic environment in which the customers operate. Uncertain global geopolitical, economic and health conditions and the lack of visibility or the lack of financial resources may cause some customers, e.g. within the automotive, aerospace, energy or natural resources industries, to reduce, postpone or cancel their investments, or to reduce or not renew ongoing paid maintenance for their installed base, which impact larger customers' revenue with their respective sub-contractors; the political, economic and monetary situation in certain geographic regions where Dassault Systèmes operates could become more volatile and negatively affect Dassault Systèmes' business, and in particular its revenue, for example, due to stricter export compliance rules or the introduction of new customs barriers or controls on the exchange of goods and services; continued pressure or volatility on raw materials and energy prices could also slow down Dassault Systèmes' diversification efforts in new industries; uncertainties regarding the extent and duration of costs inflation could adversely affect the financial position of Dassault Systèmes; and the sales cycle of the Dassault Systèmes' products – already relatively long due to the strategic nature of such investments for customers – could further lengthen. The occurrence of crises – health and political crises in particular – could have consequences both for the health and safety of Dassault Systèmes' employees and for the Company. It could also adversely impact the financial situation or financing and supply capabilities of Dassault Systèmes' existing and potential customers, commercial and technology partners, some of whom may be forced to temporarily close sites or to cease operations. A deteriorating economic environment could generate increased price pressure and affect the collection of receivables, which would negatively affect Dassault Systèmes' revenue, financial performance and market position. Dassault Systèmes makes every effort to take into consideration this uncertain outlook. Dassault Systèmes' business results, however, may not develop as anticipated. Furthermore, due to factors affecting sales of Dassault Systèmes' products and services, there may be a substantial time lag between an improvement in global economic and business conditions and an upswing in the Company's business results.
