Ryanair claims French airport strikers wanted ‘time off' amid travel chaos
One million airline passengers were affected by a French air-traffic control walkout earlier in July, costing airlines an estimated £100m.
Eurocontrol, an aviation association, said nearly 3,000 flights were cancelled and more than 7,400 delayed amid the strike action. Ryanair cancelled 718, representing 21 per cent of the total schedule.
After the walkout on 3 and 4 July, Ryanair claimed that some French air traffic staff continued to strike or called in sick over the weekend in order to gain additional leave.
'On the Saturday and Sunday, some controllers decided to strike and others rang in sick, which resulted in two more days of cancellations,' said Jade Kirwan, Ryanair communications director, according to The Telegraph.
'They were looking for some time off, so they opportunistically took that weekend. It was an absolute nightmare.'
Ryanair said it is concerned that similar action – and sickness claims – could continue throughout the summer, potentially causing more travel chaos for families during the school holidays.
'There is nothing to stop a million passengers being affected this time next week, or the week after or the week after that,' Ms Kirwan added.
The low-cost airline has labelled the strikes across Europe, and especially in France, as 'recreational'.
'While we recognise their right to strike, Europe's airlines have repeatedly called on the European Union Commission to protect overflights,' the airline's CEO, Michael O'Leary, said earlier this month.
'It is unacceptable that flights which overfly France, and which could operate without disruption, are needlessly cancelled, simply because the European Commission won't protect overflights, or defend the single market.'
Mr O'Leary also claimed that 90 per cent of the mass flight cancellations over the two initial strike days could have been avoided if the EU Commission had intervened.
'What's stopping French air traffic controllers from closing the EU skies again next week or the week after with more of these unjustified recreational strikes?' he added.
One in three of all flights in Europe fly to, from, within or over France, making those journeys more susceptible to industrial action by air traffic controllers.
In addition to the strikes, passengers have also been affected by airspace closures over eastern Europe and general staff shortages in air traffic control this summer.

Leonardo DiCaprio, 50, sports a knee brace for padel game with girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti on Italian getaway
Leonardo DiCaprio sported a knee brace while enjoying a padel match with his model girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti during their lavish Italian getaway on Sunday. The 50-year-old Oscar winner — who showed off his recent weight loss on the trip — took part in the relaxing game while spending time on the island of Sardinia with other close pals. The Titanic actor opted for comfort with a short-sleeved plain white T-shirt and khaki shorts. Leonardo also slipped into a pair of white Nike sneakers and donned a green-and-white cap. The star — who was romantically linked to Vittoria in 2023 — completed his outfit by rocking a pair of black shades. The supermodel, 27, flaunted her toned frame in a white tank top, as well as fitted black shorts and white sneakers. Leonardo no longer sported the knee brace, while his model girlfriend layered her ensemble with a black hoodie. The two stars have been enjoying the summer season in Europe, and earlier this month they were spotted on a luxurious yacht in Saint Tropez. The Hollywood actor showcased his slimmer frame alongside his bikini-clad girlfriend as they soaked up the warm sun. Leonardo donned a pair of black swim trunks and a gold necklace before taking a dip in the cool water. Vittoria wore a skimpy pink bikini top with matching drawstring bottoms as she joined her boyfriend on the spacious boat. It came not long after the lovebirds attended the star-studded wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez in Venice late last month — with the actor garnering backlash for his attendance. Leonardo no longer sported the knee brace while the beauty layered her ensemble with a black hoodie Leonardo and Vittoria first sparked romance rumors in August 2023 during an ice cream date in Santa Barbara. The following month, The Wolf Of Wall Street actor was seen at Milan Fashion Week to support the model. In November of that, she was spotted attending Leo's 49th birthday bash in Beverly Hills. A source told Us Weekly at the time, 'They are in love. Leo was clearly very proud to be showing Vittoria off and letting everyone see how happy they are together.' Since going public with their relationship, Leonardo and Vittoria have been embroiled in engagement rumors. During an interview with Vogue France earlier this year in March, Vittoria revealed that she met the actor in Milan, but she didn't go into specifics. The couple mainly keep their romance private, but she offered a slight glimpse at their relationship while talking to the outlet. 'As soon as you're in a relationship with someone who has a larger following than you, you become "girlfriend of" — or "boyfriend of," for that matter,' she said. 'And that can be extremely annoying. Suddenly, people are talking about you as so-and-so's girlfriend who was so-and-so's ex.' Vittoria added, 'So it's not nice to think that you can't love whoever you want, because of the labels people need to stick on you.' The model was then questioned about whether jealousy was part of a relationship while dating someone who is often in the spotlight and is well-known in the industry. 'It's something you learn,' she said. 'If what you're experiencing is real, if you know you love each other, then there's no reason to be alarmed. Because love protects and gives confidence.' Before her romance with Leonardo, Vittoria was married to Matteo Milleri from 2020 until their divorce in 2023. The Hollywood actor was previously in a relationship with actress Camila Morrone from 2017 through 2022. Aside from spending quality time with Vittoria, Leonardo has been keeping busy during the summer season — including when he made an appearance at Wimbledon earlier this month. He was seen in the stands while watching the championships in London in a sleek gray suit and a white shirt. The star has a number of projects under his belt, including Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming political action thriller One Battle After Another, which is hits theaters on September 26.

'Twilight bag drop off' can save you stress at the airport - what you should know
Travel expert Simon Calder has revealed a handy tip for Brits who want to save time at the airport Queuing to drop off bags at the airport is likely the last thing you want to be doing before an early morning flight. But did you know there's often a way to sidestep this entirely? Savvy travel journalist Simon Calder has revealed a tip to Brits that could save them time and hassle at numerous airports throughout the UK. During an appearance on ITV's This Morning, he recommended looking into airline's 'twilight bag drop' services, which typically enable passengers to drop off hold luggage the evening before their departure. "[This applies] if you live near an airport, if you are staying at an airport hotel," he told presenters Olivia Attwood and Dermot O'Leary. "Because aviation, as you know, is just a whole series of hurdles, obstacles you have got to get past. So, if you can get that all-important bag drop sorted out the night before, lots of airports and airlines will allow you to do this, if you have got an early flight. "So, you drop the bags off, you go to your hotel, you have got one fewer things to worry about in the morning." He then quipped: "Of course, I'm a hand luggage-only man." Believe it or not, numerous major airlines, including EasyJet, Ryanair, British Airways, and Aer Lingus, provide a twilight drop-off service in the UK. Nevertheless, this is highly location-dependent, with operations differing considerably between UK airports, so it is crucial to verify this with your ticket provider before you travel. EasyJet, for instance, provides a twilight bag drop-off service at London Gatwick Airport between 8pm and 10pm for those flying out before 8am the following day. On the flipside, Edinburgh Airport's twilight service runs from 4pm to 8pm and covers EasyJet travellers departing before midday. These twilight services are not just limited to the UK either. With EasyJet, travellers can drop off their luggage between 7pm and 9pm at Amsterdam Schiphol if they're flying out before 8am the next day. A similar policy applies at Berlin's Airport, where bag drop-offs are available between 6pm and 9pm for customers departing before 9:30am. In all instances, passengers must present their passports and boarding passes. Advice on EasyJet's website reads: "Got an early morning trip? Beat the rush by dropping off your hold bags the evening before your flight. Simply head to our Bag Drop area during the hours below with your passport and boarding passes, then we'll take care of the rest. Your bags will be ready to collect when you arrive at your destination." For more information, visit your ticket provider's website.

EasyJet, Ryanair and TUI passengers should check little-known rule before flying
If you're packing prescription medication for your next holiday, there's an extra step you might need to take to ensure you don't get caught out at airport security Passengers flying with popular airlines such as EasyJet, Ryanair, TUI, and Jet2 need to be aware of a rule that could delay them at airport security. There are specific regulations about what can and can't be carried in hand luggage. Some holidaymakers might not realise an additional document is required for certain items. Prescription medication may not seem like it would pose any problems, but the airlines view things differently. If you attempt to carry medication that's over 100ml, security personnel will stop you and may request a letter from a doctor or other healthcare professional, reports the Mirror. This letter needs to verify that you need to have the medication with you on the flight. According to advice from if your medication is in tablet form or is less than 100ml, you don't need to provide this documentation. Below is some advice from some of the top airlines to help clarify the travel rules so you're prepared and not caught off guard at the airport. Ryanair Ryanair doesn't require customers to have a doctor's letter to carry medication in their hand luggage, however, this might be required by airport security. If a passenger needs to take medical equipment in addition to their hand luggage, Ryanair will provide them with a medical baggage waiver letter. TUI A spokesperson for TUI informed the Liverpool Echo: "If a customer is carrying medication or medical equipment onto an aircraft, they will need to bring a doctor's letter or a prescription, which will allow customers to pass through check-in and security easily. "Travellers may also bring liquid medication larger than 100ml through security if they have a doctor's letter." Jet2 According to Jet2's website guidance: "All the essential medications you need for the duration of your journey should be carried in your hand luggage. "Essential liquid medication in quantities over 100ml must be verified as genuine by a doctor's letter and must be presented in their original containers. Bottles and packaging may need to be opened by airport security during screening." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! EasyJet easyJet stated: "In line with government guidance passengers are able to bring essential medication on board and we only require a letter from a healthcare practitioner confirming that it is necessary to bring medication on board if there are liquids that exceed 100ml, are sharp objects such as needles or oxygen cylinders and concentrators, or any medical equipment that may be considered as dangerous goods in the aircraft cabin, a list of which can be found on our help pages on The UK Government's official guidelines state that any medicine containing a controlled drug must be carried in your hand luggage when entering or leaving the UK. If you can't prove it was prescribed for you, it may be confiscated at the border. If you're planning to take medicine out of the UK, consult your doctor or pharmacist to determine if your medicine contains a controlled drug. If it does, verify the rules for your destination country with the embassy before travelling. You'll need to provide proof of ownership with either a prescription or a letter from your doctor.
