Merlier edges UAE Tour sprint as Pogacar retains lead

Iraqi News22-02-2025

Dubai – Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier won the fifth stage of the UAE Tour in a close finish on Friday as Tadej Pogacar retained the overall lead.
Merlier survived a badly-timed toilet break when Pogacar went on a surprise breakaway. But after being outpaced by Italian rider Jonathan Milan on the two previous sprint finishes, he took emphatic revenge, refusing to be distracted by a late crash that split the peloton.
The Belgian edged another Italian, Matteo Malucelli, on the line. Milan, of Lidl Trek, missed not only a hat-trick of wins but also lost second place to his compatriot.
'We discussed yesterday with the team what we did wrong, and today we did a really good job,' Merlier, who rides for Soudal Quick Step, said at the finish.
'They brought me in a really good position towards the last one kilometre and a half, and in the last corner I came onto the wheel of Milan.
'I was waiting, waiting, waiting for my moment. I'm really happy.'
The day was shaped by a breakaway containing Pogacar, of Team UAE, who spent more than 100km of the flat 160km stage ahead, increasing the pace of the stage for everyone.
Pogacar picked up three seconds in bonuses on the intermediate sprints to increase his lead to 21sec over second-place Josh Tarling.
'It was not the plan to extend my lead through time bonuses today but the move happened in a funny moment,' Pogacar told the press conference.
'Other guys followed as well and it turned out to be a breakaway.'
'It was a good day out,' said Pogacar after his workout.
The breakaway was at one stage more than two minutes ahead, forcing the teams of the leading sprinters to chase.
'Some riders were really motivated to have a training day today, so it was a hard pace all day,' complained Merlier at the finish.
He added that the attack had come at a bad moment.
'I was coming back from a pee stop when Tadej Pogacar attacked and we started pulling, then we asked help from other teams. The guys did a very good job to bring it back.'

Iraq and the World Cup dream: a nation's playoff path to 2026 is revealed

Baghdad ( – For a nation with a deep and enduring passion for football, the dream of seeing the Lions of Mesopotamia on the World Cup stage is a powerful unifying force. After a hard-fought qualifying round, Iraq finished third in their group, keeping that dream alive. Now, the path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been clarified, revealing a challenging but possible multi-stage playoff journey that has the entire country holding its breath. Iraq has qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals only once in its history, a cherished memory for generations of fans. In 1986, the national team traveled to Mexico, where they competed bravely in a tough group against hosts Mexico, Belgium, and Paraguay. Though they did not advance, the team left an indelible mark. After narrow 1-0 losses to Paraguay and Mexico, Iraq scored its first and only World Cup finals goal when the legendary Ahmed Radhi found the net against a strong Belgian side in a 2-1 defeat. That moment remains a pinnacle of Iraqi football history, a symbol of pride that fans long to see repeated. To return to the global stage, Iraq must first navigate the AFC Playoff (Fourth Round). The draw for this crucial stage will be held on July 17th. The six Asian teams that finished third in their respective groups have been seeded into three pots for this draw: Pot 1 (Hosts): Qatar, Saudi Arabia Pot 2: Iraq, UAE Pot 3: Oman, Indonesia These teams will be drawn into two groups of three (Group A and Group B), with each group hosted by either Qatar or Saudi Arabia. As a Pot 2 team, Iraq knows it will face one host nation (either Qatar or Saudi Arabia) and one other nation (either Oman or Indonesia). The format is a high-stakes, single round-robin tournament held in October 2025. Iraq's two decisive matches are scheduled for October 11th (against the Pot 3 team) and October 14th (against the Pot 1 host). The stakes in these two October matches are immense, as they offer two distinct paths forward: Direct Qualification: The winner of each of the two playoff groups (the team that finishes 1st in Group A and 1st in Group B) will qualify directly for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This is the primary goal for Iraq. The Final Chance: The runners-up of each group (the teams that finish 2nd) will have one last lifeline. They will play each other in a Fifth Round single match. The winner of that match will advance to the Inter-Confederation Playoff, where they will face teams from other continents (like CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, or OFC) for one of the very last spots in the World Cup. The journey is complex and demanding, but the path is clear. For Iraq, the dream of a second World Cup appearance hinges on two critical games this October. The nation watches with hope, ready to cheer on the Lions of Mesopotamia as they fight to make history once again.

Pochettino problems mount as US routed 4-0 by Switzerland

Los Angeles – An experimental United States line-up crashed to a 4-0 friendly home defeat to Switzerland on Tuesday, deepening the gloom around Mauricio Pochettino's squad one year out from hosting the World Cup. A game intended as a morale-boosting send-off before the USA take part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup unraveled in a disastrous first half that saw Switzerland 4-0 up after 36 minutes in Nashville. Dan Ndoye, Michel Aebischer, Breel Embolo and Johan Manzambi scored for Switzerland to leave a disgruntled home crowd at Geodis Park in Nashville raining boos down from the stands. The defeat was the fourth straight loss suffered by Pochettino's side, the first time the US has lost four in a row since 2007. Pochettino is planning for the USA's Gold Cup campaign, which kicks off on Sunday against Trinidad and Tobago, without several key players who are unavailable. AC Milan star Christian Pulisic was excused duty from the tournament after requesting a rest while Juventus duo Weston McKennie and Tim Weah are unavailable due to the Italian side's participation in the FIFA Club World Cup. Those absences left former Chelsea and Tottenham coach Pochettino having to dig deep to gauge the depth of his resources as the US builds towards next year's World Cup finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico. On Tuesday's evidence, the return of his European-based stars cannot come soon enough after Switzerland ran riot in a lopsided first half. Pochettino said he bore responsibility for picking the inexperienced line-up that were outclassed by the rampant Swiss. 'First of all it's my responsibility the choice of the starting 11. I wanted to give minutes to certain players, but we were never in the game,' the Argentine said. US defender Walker Zimmerman attempted to put a brave face on the mauling, insisting there was still plenty of time for the side to improve before next year's World Cup. 'It's easy to look at one half and think this is all going to pieces, that we can't come back from a result like this,' Zimmerman told TNT television. 'But look at the build-up to 2022 — we took down Morocco 3-0 and they made the semi-final. Things change. That was six months apart. 'So it's not the end of the world. We accept that it's not good enough and we realize that. That's where the disappointment comes in, but we have to flip the script and we've gotta make sure we do not come out like that ever again.'

Macron welcomes PSG team to presidential palace to celebrate their historic Champions League win

The winner of European club football's biggest prize arrived in Paris on Sunday afternoon and head to France's most famous avenue, the Champs-Élysées, which overnight Saturday saw acts of violence and clashes with police. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the Paris Saint-Germain football team to the presidential palace on Sunday to celebrate their historic Champions League win. Before meeting with Macron, PSG were paraded through the Champs-Elysee in an open roof coach bus. The team beat Italian side Inter Milan 5-0 in the tournament's final the day prior in Munich. It was the first time PSG ever won the title – having coming up short in their only previous final against Bayern Munich in 2020. French authorities say two people died after celebrations erupted around the country following the team's win. A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the city of Dax during a PSG street party, according to the national police. Another person was killed in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car during PSG celebrations, the interior minister's office said. The circumstances of both deaths are being investigated. The interior ministry also said 18 police officer in Paris were injured and hundreds of people were arrested. Macron condemned the 'unacceptable' violence which had occurred during celebrations following PSG's victory as he welcomed the team to the Elysee Palace. 'Nothing can justify what has happened in the last few hours, the violent clashes are unacceptable,' he said before congratulating the team.
