UK Inflation Holds at Highest Level in More Than a Year
Save
UK inflation remained at its highest level in over a year, keeping price pressures uncomfortably high as the Bank of England prepares to give its latest signal on whether it will carry on cutting interest rates amid the threat of another energy price spike.
Consumer price inflation was 3.4% in May, slightly above economists' expectations for 3.3% and in line with BOE forecasts, the Office for National Statistics said Wednesday. Services inflation — which is being closely watched for signs of domestic pressures — eased to 4.7% from 5.4%, in line with BOE forecasts.

Japan's wholesale inflation slows for 4th month in July
TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan's annual wholesale inflation slowed for the fourth straight month in July, data showed on Wednesday, underscoring the central bank's view that upward price pressure from raw material costs will dissipate. The corporate goods price index (CGPI), which measures the price companies charge each other for their goods and services, rose 2.6% in July from a year earlier, data showed, slowing from the previous month's 2.9% increase. It compared with a median market forecast for a 2.5% rise. The yen-based import price index fell 10.4% in July from a year earlier, following a revised 12.2% drop in June, the Bank of Japan (BOJ) data showed. Gold Holds Modest Gain as Inflation Data Aids US Rate-Cut Bets
Gold held a modest gain following a US inflation reading that was in line with expectations and reinforced wagers on an interest-rate cut next month. Bullion was steady after closing 0.2% higher in the previous session, following a report that showed underlying US inflation accelerated to the strongest since the start of the year — though a tepid rise in goods prices eased concerns about tariff-driven pressures.

Gold Edges Higher, Supported by Fed Rate-Cut Prospects
2339 GMT — Gold edges higher in early Asian trade. U.S. data released overnight showed inflation held steady in July, keeping a Fed rate cut in play for September and underpinning the appeal of the non-interest-bearing precious metal. 'Looking beyond the recent volatility brought about by the newsflow on tariffs, the overall positive outlook on gold remains intact,' UBS Global Research's Joni Teves says in an email. 'Looming rate cuts over the course of the year as U.S. economic data softens are supportive of higher gold prices ahead,' the precious metals strategist adds. Spot gold is 0.1% higher at $3,351.09/oz. (
