Turkey rallies to send US men's soccer to third straight defeat

The Americans dropped to 5-4 under Pochettino, who took over after first-round elimination last year's Copa America led the US Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter. They have lost three straight for the second time in a year. Pochettino changed eight starters from the Nations League loss to Canada in March, keeping only left back Max Arfsten, winger Diego Luna and forward Patrick Agyemang. Advertisement Defender Alex Freeman, a 20-year-old son of former NFL All-Pro receiver Antonio Freeman, started in his US debut. Matt Freese, a starter at MLS' New York City FC, made his debut in goal. Matt Turner, the usual starter since 2022, didn't play for Crystal Palace after March 1. McGlynn scored when he ran onto a pass from Malik Tilman, took several touches, cut inside and curled a left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area inside the far post for his second goal in five international appearances. Turkey tied it in the 24th minute when Freese tapped the ball to Johnny Cardoso, whose pass ricocheted off a leg and past Freese for Güler's fifth international goal. Then in the 27th, Miles Robinson tried to clear Oğuz Aydın's shot and the ball went to Aktürkoğlu, who one-timed a bouncing shot past Freese for his 12th international goal and sixth in eight games. A baffling mistake turns a solid USMNT match into a missed opportunity, and a loss to Türkiye

CONNECTICUT, UNITED STATES - JUNE 7: Kenan Yildiz (11) of Turkiye in action against Johnny Cardoso (15) of USA during the friendly match between Turkiye and USA at Pratt and Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut, United States on June 7, 2025. (Photo by Mostafa Bassim/Anadolu via Getty Images) For roughly 23 minutes on Saturday in Connecticut, a makeshift U.S. men's national team was oozing confidence. It was beating Türkiye, 1-0, in its first friendly of the summer. Recent debutants were dueling with established Turkish stars, and winning. This, after months of malaise, and with controversy fueled by missing stars lingering, was precisely what an ailing program needed. And then, with one careless pass and fluky bounce, all the positive vibes swirled down drains and back to ground zero. The USMNT ultimately lost to Türkiye, 2-1, at a dripping-wet Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn. It was their third straight loss, and seventh consecutive game against a European foe without a victory. In many ways, it was more of the same — uninspiring, and without progress. Advertisement But it was more so a missed opportunity. Because for two-thirds of the match, this makeshift USMNT outplayed a mostly-full-strength European quarterfinalist. Because of one baffling mistake, though, the U.S. had nothing material to show for it. The mistake was Johnny Cardoso's. In the 24th minute, he picked up the ball in his own penalty area; two touches later, he flicked it off the shin of Arda Güler — and it dribbled directly into the corner of the U.S. net. The foosball-like goal leveled the game at 1-1. And it shook the Americans. 'It was an emotional goal,' head coach Mauricio Pochettino said at halftime. In one moment, they were flowing and assured; when the game re-kicked off, they looked deflated. A couple minutes later, they conceded again, and the good vibes were clearly gone. Advertisement Johnny, who spent the opening 20 minutes playing like the commanding midfielder who's reportedly off to Atlético Madrid for $30 million, suddenly began gifting possession and counterattacks to his Turkish counterparts. Max Arfsten and even Diego Luna, who'd been bright spots early on, were also giving the ball away in their defensive half. U.S. defenders were suddenly shaky on and off the ball. Everyone was hesitant in duels. The game turned on its head, from an impressive U.S. performance to a troubling one. By the end of 90 minutes, it was more impressive than troubling. 'There's a lot more positives we can take away,' midfielder Tyler Adams told TNT afterwards. Adams replaced Cardoso at halftime, and the USMNT stabilized. Advertisement But its collection of reserves didn't quite have the quality to find an equalizer. And so, rather than a jumping-off point for a successful summer, Saturday's match became another forgettable one, far below the standard that the USMNT will need to meet as it looks toward the 2026 World Cup.

Turkey inflict third straight loss on World Cup hosts USA

The United States have suffered a third straight defeat under Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino, falling to Turkey in a friendly football match in Connecticut (Frederic J. Brown) The United States suffered their third straight loss under coach Mauricio Pochettino as they fell to a 2-1 friendly defeat to Turkey in Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday. Pochettino, whose team lost to Panama and Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League finals in March, was without several starters, including captain and AC Milan winger Christian Pulisic. Advertisement Almost a year out from the start of the World Cup, which the USA is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, Pochettino used the match to take a look at some of those on the fringes of his squad. One of those, Houston Dynamo midfielder Jack McGlynn, put the home side ahead in the second minute in spectacular fashion. The 21-year-old picked the ball up on the right flank, cut inside and then curled a beautiful shot from 20-yards out into the far corner. It was an intense start from a hungry looking USA, but Turkey soon found their footing and began to apply pressure on the USA back line. Arda Guler missed a great chance, unmarked in the box he leaned back and fired over the bar and then Orkun Kokcu forced debutant keeper Matt Freese into a fine save with a fierce drive. Advertisement The visitors' pressure paid off in the 24th minute but it was gifted to them by USA midfielder Johnny Cardoso who, attempting to play out from the back, clipped a pass against Guler which ricocheted past Freese and into the net. Less then three minutes later, Turkey had the lead after the USA defence was unable to clear and the ball fell to Kerem Akturkoglu who drove home. Pochettino's men were much better after the break though and were unfortunate not to draw level - Max Arfsten headed wide from close range and Patrick Agyemang had a shot on target but the best opportunity fell to Malik Tillman. Substitute Tyler Adams floated a lovely cross to the back post but with all the goal to aim at, Tillman headed straight at Turkey keeper Berke Ozer. Advertisement As the USA pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Turkey had a late chance to make it 3-1 but after a swift counter-attack Baris Alper Yilmaz screwed his shot wide. "For the first time for a few camps there were more positives than negatives," said midfielder Adams. "I think we have a lot of room for growth, if you asked me in March, I would say that we were far away but after a performance like that, there's a lot more positives that we can take away," he added. The USA face Switzerland in Nashville on Tuesday. sev/bb
