Focus Point approves bonus issue & dividend reinvestment

The Sun30-07-2025
MALAYSIA's leading optical retail chain, Focus Point Holdings Berhad, has secured overwhelming shareholder support for two major initiatives designed to reward investors and enhance share liquidity. The company's Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on July 29, 2025, approved both a substantial 1-for-3 bonus issue and the establishment of a comprehensive Dividend Reinvestment Plan (DRP).
Major Share Expansion Through Bonus Issue
The approved bonus issue represents a significant expansion of Focus Point's share capital, with up to 153,999,680 new ordinary shares set to be issued. Current shareholders will receive one bonus share for every three existing shares held, potentially increasing the company's total issued shares from 461,999,041 to an impressive 615,998,721 shares.
This strategic move is expected to enhance trading liquidity and make Focus Point shares more accessible to a broader range of investors. The entitlement date will be announced following receipt of all necessary regulatory approvals, including conditional approval from Bursa Securities.
Flexible Dividend Reinvestment Options
Complementing the bonus issue, Focus Point's new Dividend Reinvestment Plan offers shareholders unprecedented flexibility in managing their returns. Under this program, investors can choose to reinvest their cash dividends—in whole or in part—into new shares rather than receiving cash payments.
The plan covers all types of dividends, including interim, final, special, and other cash distributions. Importantly, the Board retains discretion over which dividends qualify for reinvestment, ensuring the company maintains financial flexibility while offering valuable options to shareholders.
Leadership Confidence in Strategic Direction
Datuk Liaw Choon Liang, President & Chief Executive Officer of Focus Point, expressed enthusiasm about the initiatives: 'These initiatives reflect our commitment to rewarding shareholders while supporting Focus Point's long-term growth. With the bonus issue enhancing liquidity and broadening investor reach, and the DRP offering a convenient reinvestment option, both initiatives are expected to support the Group's growth trajectory while delivering added value to shareholders.'
Strong Foundation for Continued Growth
Established in 1989, Focus Point has evolved from a single optical store into Malaysia's premier eyewear and vision care provider. The company operates an extensive network across Malaysia and the region, offering comprehensive optical brands and services through its retail chain and ExcelView Laser Eye Centre.
Beyond its core optical business, Focus Point has successfully diversified into food and beverage ventures, including the Japanese-concept Komugi bakery launched in 2012 and the HAP&PI frozen yogurt brand introduced in 2024.
The company's multi-faceted approach to business development, combined with these shareholder-focused initiatives, positions Focus Point Holdings as an attractive investment opportunity in Malaysia's retail and consumer services sector.
Both initiatives are subject to conditional approval from Bursa Securities and other relevant authorities. UOB Kay Hian (M) Sdn Bhd serves as the Principal Adviser for these corporate exercises.

Malaysia Records 1.8 Million Chinese Tourist Arrivals In First 5 Months

Nearly 1.8 million visitors from China travelled to Malaysia between January and May this year, following the government's decision to introduce a visa waiver for Chinese nationals. Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said the policy, which took effect in 2024, had driven a sharp rise in arrivals, from 1.6 million in 2023 to 3.4 million last year. 'Among these efforts, we invited more than 100 imams from China and Europe to experience first-hand Malaysia's Muslim-friendly tourism concept, which is suitable for people of all backgrounds and religions,' he told the Dewan Rakyat during the oral question-and-answer session today. He was replying to Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (PH–Balik Pulau), who had asked about the ministry's measures to attract Muslim tourists from China. Khairul Firdaus added that the ministry, together with the travel agency association, was actively pursuing promotional campaigns targeting Chinese tourists, particularly those seeking Muslim-friendly experiences. In response to a separate question from Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (PN–Dungun) on ensuring the east coast states also benefit economically, the deputy minister said integrated promotions were being undertaken via Tourism Malaysia and the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC). These, he said, highlighted attractions such as the Crystal Mosque to audiences in ASEAN, Europe, China, Japan and South Korea. 'However, it is also closely linked to the culture of the local community and when we are able to promote these elements, it will create spillover benefits for industries such as homestays, handicrafts and traditional foods,' he said.

Ipoh Sentral: Priority For Recreational Park To Open Before Commercial Projects

IPOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The developer of the Ipoh Sentral project site has been reminded to complete the construction of a recreational park first before developing any commercial projects. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the construction of the recreational park is among the first phase in construction plans for the Ipoh Sentral project which is expected to be completed within a year. He said the condition was set by the government to ensure that local people experience the benefits of development in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI. "We want developers to prioritise the public first, which is our condition ... we have to deliver the recreational park to the local community first before they can pursue profits even though this park brings no financial gain to the developer. "What is the point of this development if the local people cannot enjoy it. For the people of Perak, especially those in Ipoh, I have set a condition for the developer, that within six to 12 months, we want to deliver the first phase of this recreational park to be open to the public. So the developer must remember this as one of the key conditions,' he said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ipoh Sentral project here today. The ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim together with Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, and was also attended by MRCB Land chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini. Loke said the project, which is located adjacent to the Ipoh train station, will be developed using the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept by integrating rail, bus, taxi and e-hailing services, and pedestrian and cycling lanes. 'This development concept is in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI and the National Transport Master Plan, and supports the direction of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) which makes TOD the key driver of urban growth. 'This approach promotes sustainable lifestyles, reduces traffic congestion, concentrates development around stations and transport hubs, and strengthens the role of public transport as one of the people's main choices,' he said.

Kelantan Targets One Million Foreign Tourists This Year

BACHOK, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Kelantan is targeting the arrival of one million international tourists this year, compared with only 595,000 in 2024, with a special focus on the Chinese and Japanese markets. State Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Kamaruddin Md Nor said last year's positive achievement of 10.5 million total tourist arrivals, surpassing the 10-million target, serves as a catalyst to further strengthen the state's tourism sector. 'If last year we managed to attract over 595,000 foreign tourists, bringing the overall total to 11.1 million, this time we want to draw even more international visitors to Kelantan.
