‘Off Road Confidential' special takes viewers across California coast

(NewsNation) — NewsNation is taking off on a road trip to remember. From the beautiful redwoods to the stunning coast, and bustling cities to charming small towns, NewsNation special 'Off Road Confidential,' made in association with Visit California, is finding hidden gems for the everyday traveler and connecting with the people who make these places unforgettable.
Gabriel Ornelas made stops in five must-see California places.
The views in Marin County, California, give visitors that 'quintessential' vacation feeling: 'I didn't know this was California,' Ornelas said.
He visited the county, located between San Francisco and wine country, for one leg of 'Off Road Confidential.'
Ornelas got the chance to try some local cheese, take a horseback trek and admire the view from Point Bonita Lighthouse.
'There's amazing institutions, restaurant institutions, for oysters, clam chowder,' Ornelas said. 'You get a little bit of that East Coast feel on the West Coast, which is so nice.'
Carmel-by-the-sea in Monterey County, California, is the southernmost stop on NewsNation's 'Off Road Confidential.'
The multifaceted town's draws include local wine, lots of shopping and premier hiking spots.
One person Ornelas spoke to told him being in Carmel-by-the-sea is being 'surrounded by everything that's good in life.'
In Half Moon Bay, which is located roughly 30 miles south of San Francisco, Ornelas ventured out onto the water on a kayak and dug into some locally-made artichoke bread.
'It's this little gem that's just south of the big city,' Ornelas told 'Morning in America.' 'And people should definitely take, you know, the coastal highway down.'
Home to some of the biggest waves in the world, Ornelas describes the surfer-laden beaches near Half Moon Bay as 'stunningly beautiful.'
'It's this little beach town that really has this local vibe, and everyone is so nice. It's so charming,' he said.
Ornelas discovered Sacramento's rich history and culture talking to the farmers who cultivate the region's produce.
Ornelas' itinerary was packed with hidden gems — from food to fun for families, couples and even the solo traveler.
'It's a love letter. It's a postcard, a visual postcard, but really it's an invitation for people to get out, explore, discover California,' Ornelas said.
The city's plethora of murals, tasty artisanal chocolate and the Mission District's beautiful Dolores Park make it a can't-miss destination, according to 'Off Road Confidential' host Gabriel Ornelas.
'So many people know it for Alcatraz, the Golden Gate, Fisherman's Wharf, which are all incredible,' Ornelas said. 'But there's so much more.'
Whether Ornelas was making chocolate, choosing from 90 different pasta shapes or just taking a stroll in the city's steep streets, he told 'Morning in America' locals and tourists alike can feel welcome.
'San Francisco is for everyone, and you can find something, whatever you want,' Ornelas said. 'You can find something there.'

Canadian road trips to US drop 38 percent year-on-year
The number of Canadians returning from road trips to the United States fell sharply in May compared to the same period in 2024. Canadian-resident return trips by car totaled 1.3 million, a 38.1 percent drop from May 2024 — marking the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year declines. Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. by air also fell — by 24.2 percent — compared to May 2024. The decline in Canadian-resident air travel from the U.S. accounts for the overall dip in return air travel. While Canadians' return travel by air declined by 3.7 percent overall, return air travel increased by 9.8 percent among Canadians returning from overseas countries compared to last May. U.S. residents, meanwhile, traveled to Canada at a lower rate than they did last year but saw a more modest decline than their Canadian counterparts. U.S.-resident arrivals to Canada by car fell by 8.4 percent and, by air, fell by 0.3 percent, compared to last May. The decline in Canadian road trips to the U.S. continued a trend seen in prior months. In April 2025, Canadian-resident return trips by car from the U.S. totaled 1.2 million — a 35.2 percent decline from April 2024. Canadian-resident return trips by air fell by 19.9 percent, compared to the prior month. The overall tourism decline threatens to wipe out $12.5 billion from the American economy this year, NewsNation reported. The decline in tourism comes as tensions between the U.S. and Canada have cooled under the Trump administration, as President Trump continues to muse publicly about making Canada a 51st state of America, which Prime Minister Mark Carney has repeatedly rejected as a nonstarter.

Springfield airport plans major upgrades for 2025
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Springfield-Branson National Airport has announced some new improvements and additions in 2025. Springfield-Branson National Airport unveils new history exhibit According to a press release, the biggest change happening will be the removal of their carpet and the installation of terrazzo flooring. Approximately 93,000 square feet of tile and carpet will be replaced with terrazzo. Beginning early this summer, airport customers will notice sections of the terminal being closed one at a time throughout the 42-week installation. In addition to the flooring, the airport will also be adding new automated exit lanes in the fall, new concrete will be poured as part of the Terminal Apron Expansion Project in the next 12 months, and short-term parking will be expanded to add more than 225 parking spaces in 2026.
