Neeraj Chopra vs Arshad Nadeem Rematch At Diamond League Uncertain After Surgery
Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem's Diamond League showdown in Poland is doubtful due to Nadeem's calf surgery. He's focusing on recovery for the Tokyo World Championships.
The highly anticipated showdown between Olympic medallists Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem at next month's Diamond League meet in Poland is now in doubt, following recent surgery on Nadeem's calf muscle.
The two javelin stars were scheduled to face off for the first time since their electrifying contest at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Nadeem stunned the world with a 92.97m throw to claim gold—beating Chopra, who secured silver with a best of 89.45m.
Chopra and Nadeem were slated to compete against each other in Silesia, Poland on August 16, and later in Switzerland as part of the Diamond League circuit. However, Nadeem's participation is now uncertain due to his recent medical procedure.
Nadeem's coach, Salman Butt—currently with the athlete in England—confirmed that the reigning Olympic champion is unlikely to feature in the upcoming Diamond League meets, with a greater focus on recovery and preparation for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.
'He (Nadeem) is more focused on preparing for the World Championships in Tokyo in September, which is why he opted for surgery on a calf muscle that had been troubling him for a while," Butt explained. 'I don't think they will compete against each other until the World event."
Nadeem underwent an interventional procedure on his calf, performed by Dr. Ali Bajwa at Spire Hospital in Cambridge. He is currently in rehabilitation in London, and Butt indicated that a return to competition before the World Championships is possible—if doctors give him the green light.
'The World Championships are very important for Arshad as he finished with a silver behind Neeraj in Budapest in 2023," Butt added.
Arshad Nadeem has rapidly built an impressive resume over the past few years. In addition to his gold medal from the Paris Olympics, he also claimed top honors at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and, more recently, at the Asian Athletics Championships held in Gumi, South Korea, earlier this year.
While fans eagerly await another chapter in the Chopra-Nadeem rivalry, their next meeting may now have to wait until the World Championships in Tokyo.

Australia Announce Squads For ODI And T20I Series Against South Africa
Mitchell Owen has been given a maiden ODI call-up following an impressive run in the recent T20I series against West Indies. Big-hitting allrounder Mitchell Owen is poised to play one-day cricket for Australia after delivering an impressive international debut in the Twenty20 series sweep in the West Indies. The 23-year-old Owen was included in both white ball squads for next month's Top End series against South Africa, announced on Wednesday. Owen, a star opener for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash domestic T20 competition, scored a half-century in his first game for Australia, contributing to a 5-0 series sweep in the Caribbean. Over four games, he averaged 41.66 runs with a strike rate of 192.3, demonstrating his big-hitting prowess by hitting 12 sixes from 65 deliveries. Cricket Australia's chief selector George Bailey commented, 'As we build toward the T20 World Cup the flexibility and depth shown in the West Indies, outside of the obvious results, has been a huge positive. Mitch Owen and Matt Kuhnemann making their respective debuts and the preparation and work done by Nathan Ellis to allow him to play all five matches were highlights." Travis Head and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood return to the ODI and T20 squads after being rested for the white ball section of the Caribbean tour following Australia's 3-0 test series win. Bailey added, 'The smaller squad for a home series, along with the return of Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood, see some players not part of the squad for this Top End series, but all remain in the frame moving forward." Test captain Pat Cummins is being rested for the white ball series against South Africa to prepare for the Ashes series starting in November, leaving Mitch Marsh to lead Australia in both formats. The T20 matches against the Proteas will be held in Darwin and Cairns on Aug. 10, 12, and 16, followed by ODIs in Cairns and Mackay in northern Queensland on Aug. 19, 22, and 24. Australia T20I Squad: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa. Australia ODI Squad: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Alex Carey, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Lance Morris, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Toronto Masters: Lorenzo Musetti Sinks James Duckworth, Holger Rune Downs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard
Italian Musetti got the better of Duckworth 7-5, 6-1 while Dane Rune pipped Mpetshi Perricard 7-6 (9/7), 6-3 to advance. Lorenzo Musetti and Holger Rune posted wins at the Toronto Masters over James Duckworth and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, respectively, to advance to the subsequent round of the event in Canada. Italian Musetti got the better of Duckworth 7-5, 6-1 in an hour and 22 minutes while Dane Rune pipped Mpetshi Perricard 7-6 (9/7), 6-3 in a fixture that lasted an hour and 15 minutes to register the win. Musetti, a former semi-finalist at both Wimbledon and Roland Garros, decisively defeated Duckworth, advancing in 82 minutes. He broke serve for a set and 5-1 on his opponent's double fault and sealed the victory with an ace in the next game. The Italian is regaining form after losing his only grass match of the summer at Wimbledon and then losing in his Washington opener last week. His last victory was in early June during the Roland Garros quarter-finals. Musetti hit 17 winners, while Duckworth was undone by over 30 unforced errors. 'I tried to stay calm and focus on my serve," Rune said after his victory. 'There's sometimes not a lot you can do against his big serve, but I was trying as much as possible," he added. 'I had a good start to the second set. I'm very happy with the match in general. I've not served like this for a while. We've been working on small adjustments," the Dane said. 'My serving felt good and I trusted it all the way," he concluded. Rune is set to take on Frenchman Alexandre Muller in his upcoming Round of 32 fixture at the event in Canada with a place in the pre-quarters up for grabs. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
