Egypt, Bahrain discuss strengthening health sector cooperation, expertise exchange
Egypt - Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, met with Jalila bint Sayed Jawad, Bahrain's Minister of Health, to explore avenues for enhancing cooperation and sharing expertise in the health sector.
The meeting took place during the Arab Health Expo conference in the United Arab Emirates, held from 27 to 29 January 2025.
According to Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for Egypt's Ministry of Health, the two ministers discussed the creation of a joint digital platform for scientific research. The platform would aim to promote collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence, improve healthcare services, and provide citizens with access to cutting-edge global technologies and advanced medical services.
During the talks, Minister Abdel Ghaffar highlighted Egypt's advancements in mechanizing kidney dialysis services and the Egyptian Ambulance Authority system, offering to share Egypt's expertise in these areas with Bahrain. Both sides also discussed strategies for training healthcare professionals based on the specific needs of each country, including potential reciprocal visits to exchange knowledge on hospital management, primary care, and preventive healthcare systems.
The two ministers also addressed ongoing efforts to support the people of Gaza. Bahrain's recent announcement of health and education initiatives aimed at those affected by the war was reviewed. Discussions included the proposal to establish an Egyptian-Bahraini rehabilitation center in Gaza to assess and treat both the physical and psychological impacts of the conflict.
Additionally, the two sides explored opportunities for collaboration in nursing education. They discussed the exchange of experiences and training in specialized fields such as emergency nursing, intensive care, neonatal care, family health, and geriatric nursing. Both countries agreed to facilitate visits between nursing bodies to learn from each other's best practices.
Another key topic was the Egyptian Genome Project. The ministers agreed to formalize knowledge exchange through a memorandum of understanding (MoU). This agreement will also include the development of 'remote' diagnostic radiology services, designed to enhance diagnostic accuracy and speed through the Teleradiology Solution National Programme.

Its humanitarian efforts are part of the UAE's mission to ease the suffering of the injured and sick amid the dire circumstances faced by Palestinians in Gaza. The hospital has provided medical services to thousands of patients since the launch of its services for Palestinian people. It has also performed more than 3,600 surgical procedures across specialities, provided physical therapy services to approximately 9,500 cases and fitted 23 prosthetic limbs for patients. The hospital was established by the UAE's Ministry of Defence, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi Ports Authority group, and includes about 100 medical and administrative staff specialising in anaesthesia, general surgery, orthopaedics and emergency services.

South Sudan: Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Ministry of Health launch newly constructed neonatal ward at Aweil State Hospital to improve care for sick newborns and premature babies
Seeking to improve access to medical care for sick, low birth weight, and premature babies in South Sudan's Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal State, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and South Sudan's Ministry of Health on 4 June 2025 opened a newly-built 40-bed neonatal inpatient ward at Aweil State Hospital. The new structure replaces the former 33-bed neonatal ward, which was frequently overcrowded with over 45 babies admitted at once and lacked enough room for critical care like resuscitation. "We had a neonatal ward, but it was always full or over its capacity," says Denis Mbae, MSF project coordinator for Aweil. "This new building, which is also closer to the maternity ward, will limit the distance that mothers have to walk to breastfeed their babies, while holding better equipment and amenities. "The new ward has increased capacity and improved design, with necessary space for incubators and life-support equipment to better support vulnerable infants whose vital organs may not be fully developed. Mothers will also have dedicated space for Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), promoting skin-to-skin contact vital for low-birth-weight infants, which has proven to help improve health outcomes of babies in this condition. This specialized unit, the only one of its kind in the state, offers spacious environments designed for infection prevention, improved monitoring, and better working conditions for staff. The building will also provide a space for neonates under one roof, allowing for better follow-up and monitoring. MSF has supported Aweil State Hospital since 2008, providing paediatric and maternity services in a region where many people face challenges accessing timely care due to limited peripheral health services and difficulty in finding proper transportation. In 2024, MSF assisted in delivery of 7,664 babies at Aweil State Hospital. The upgrade reinforces MSF's commitment to enhancing access to health care for better outcomes for vulnerable families in South Sudan. Gaza 'freedom flotilla' rescues four migrants at sea
A group of activists heading for Gaza on a "freedom flotilla" say they have rescued four migrants at sea in an encounter with the Libyan coastguard. The yacht Madleen, whose crew includes climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, set off from an Italian port four days ago in a symbolic bid to break Israel 's blockade of the territory. Sailing in the Mediterranean on Thursday, the ship was diverted by a mayday signal from an EU border patrol drone, leading it to a deflating vessel in Egypt 's search and rescue zone, organisers said. They said 30 to 40 people were on board. As the Madleen drew closer, its crew saw a Libyan coastguard vessel approach and four people jump into the water, according to a statement from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. It said the Madleen's crew rescued the four people, who were identified as refugees from Sudan. "People would rather throw themselves into the sea than be taken to Libya," said French politician Rima Hassan, who is on the voyage. A statement from the organisers said: "The individuals rescued had fled violence and persecution in Sudan, only to face further violence, detention and torture in Libya." They are appealing to Greece, Italy or Malta to take the people to safety. Ms Hassan is a French member of the European Parliament who is of Palestinian descent. She has been barred from entering Israel because of her opposition to the war in Gaza. Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham is also on board. A previous voyage to Gaza ended in May when a different ship was hit by drones, which Freedom Flotilla organisers blamed on Israel. The yacht Madleen is named after a Gazan fisherwoman, according to the organisation, which says the flotilla is "carrying a cargo of hope and humanitarian aid". Israel blockaded all aid to Gaza for 11 weeks beginning in March. A limited amount of aid began entering last month, with food now being distributed by a private US foundation whose operations have been marred by violence. The rate of young children suffering from acute malnutrition in Gaza has nearly tripled since the ceasefire collapsed in March, according to data released by the UN on Thursday. It said about 3,000 children screened in the second half of May were affected. That was almost three times the rate in February, when a pause in fighting allowed for hundreds of aid trucks to enter Gaza each day. The Israeli army said on Thursday that Hamas was "doing everything in its power to sabotage" aid deliveries by a new US foundation. It released what it said was a recording of a Gaza resident blaming Hamas for gunfire near the aid sites. "They want to foil the plan so that the aid will go to them," the army quoted the person as saying.
