Government launches implementation phase of Egyptian Genome Project by handover of athletes' data
Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population CAIRO – 26 May 2025: Egypt launched the implementation phase of the Egyptian Genome Project on Sunday with the handover of athletes' genome data ( aka Gene-Next) . The athletes' genome handover ceremony was attended by Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population; Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports; and Dr. Awad Tag El-Din, Advisor to the President for Health and Prevention Affairs, besides other officials. Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar emphasized the crucial role of the Egyptian Genome Project in advancing both athletic excellence and public health. He noted that the more extensively Egyptian genomes are analyzed, the greater the potential to design targeted health programs and reduce disease prevalence. Highlighting the government's commitment, Abdel Ghaffar stated that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directives and the broader state vision prioritize science as the cornerstone of national progress and people as the core of development. He affirmed full state support for this national scientific endeavor, which reflects a firm belief that true human development begins with a comprehensive understanding of individuals—genetically, physically, and mentally—to unlock their full potential. In his remarks, Dr. Ayman Ashour expressed pride in the project, describing it as the first of its kind in Africa and the Middle East, with an investment of EGP 2 billion. He characterized it as a major leap forward for scientific and medical research in Egypt. The project, which began in 2021, is overseen by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology. It brings together a coalition of 15 universities, research institutions, NGOs, and four ministries, with implementation led by the Center for Medical Research and Regenerative Medicine.

The meeting took place during the Arab Health Expo conference in the United Arab Emirates, held from 27 to 29 January 2025. According to Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for Egypt's Ministry of Health, the two ministers discussed the creation of a joint digital platform for scientific research. The platform would aim to promote collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence, improve healthcare services, and provide citizens with access to cutting-edge global technologies and advanced medical services. During the talks, Minister Abdel Ghaffar highlighted Egypt's advancements in mechanizing kidney dialysis services and the Egyptian Ambulance Authority system, offering to share Egypt's expertise in these areas with Bahrain. Both sides also discussed strategies for training healthcare professionals based on the specific needs of each country, including potential reciprocal visits to exchange knowledge on hospital management, primary care, and preventive healthcare systems. The two ministers also addressed ongoing efforts to support the people of Gaza. Bahrain's recent announcement of health and education initiatives aimed at those affected by the war was reviewed. Discussions included the proposal to establish an Egyptian-Bahraini rehabilitation center in Gaza to assess and treat both the physical and psychological impacts of the conflict. Additionally, the two sides explored opportunities for collaboration in nursing education. They discussed the exchange of experiences and training in specialized fields such as emergency nursing, intensive care, neonatal care, family health, and geriatric nursing. Both countries agreed to facilitate visits between nursing bodies to learn from each other's best practices. Another key topic was the Egyptian Genome Project. The ministers agreed to formalize knowledge exchange through a memorandum of understanding (MoU). This agreement will also include the development of 'remote' diagnostic radiology services, designed to enhance diagnostic accuracy and speed through the Teleradiology Solution National Programme. © 2024 Daily News Egypt.
