Packers stunned as key man skips offseason workouts over possible position change

Daily Mail14-05-2025

Packers offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins has been skipping offseason workouts, and it's reportedly for an unusual reason.
Jenkins, 29, has played every position on the team's offensive line since they drafted him in 2019.
But with the team looking to move him to center full-time, Jenkins is looking for more financial security, ESPN has reported.
A new report from the publication states that Jenkins' proposed position change is the reason that he's been missing offseason workouts, as he seeks some sort of adjustment to the current four-year, $68million deal which he has two years left on.
As noted in the article, centers make less money than guards and tackles, so Jenkins is looking to protect himself against potential losses in the future.
He spent last season at left guard as he started all 17 regular season games.
However, the Packers inked guard Aaron Banks to a four-year, $77million deal this offseason.
The ESPN report, which suggested that a potential compromise could be guaranteeing some of the $32.8million left on his deal, came after offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said Jenkins was 'open' to the position shift.
'He's not here for other reasons than that,' Stenavich said on Monday, denying that the position switch had anything to do with him missing the offseason program.
GM Brian Gutekunst also said earlier this year that Jenkins has 'a chance to be an All-Pro center.'
Jenkins has experience in the position both with the Packers and in college with Mississippi State.
The two-time Pro Bowler has been a vital part of the Packers since they selected him with the No. 44 overall pick in 2019.
Green Bay has made the playoffs in five of his six seasons, and the team was impressive again last year as they went 11-6.
Along with the rest of the NFL, the Packers' full schedule will be released on Wednesday night, though it is known they will host the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles in Week 10.

Sky G Courtney Vandersloot has torn ACL, done for season

June 9 - Chicago Sky veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot suffered a torn ACL in her right knee and will miss the rest of the 2025 season, the team announced Sunday. Vandersloot was injured Saturday when the Sky lost 79-52 at home to the Indiana Fever. She went down while driving to the basket in the first quarter and had to be carried off the floor. Vandersloot, 36, returned to the Sky this season after becoming a franchise great from 2011-22 and then spending two years with the New York Liberty. A five-time All-Star and two-time WNBA champion (once with Chicago, once with New York), Vandersloot ranks second in league history in assists (2,886), 15th in steals (544) and 19th in games played (436). Vandersloot also became Chicago's all-time scoring leader last month, passing Allie Quigley -- her wife. Vandersloot has scored 3,745 points for the Sky. Vandersloot averaged 10.6 points and 5.3 assists and 1.6 steals in seven games this season. --Field Level Media

Ex-Louisville star Russ Smith arrested on suspicion of DUI and reckless driving

A former college and high school basketball star at two national powerhouses is now facing a DUI charge in Louisville. Russ Smith, a 34-year-old guard playing in Italy's second division, was picked up in the early hours of Sunday morning. He has since been booked on charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and one count for an expired registration tag, according to online records. As reported by the Louisville Courier Journal, police claim to have observed Smith making an illegal U-turn across several lanes in the city's Original Highlands neighborhood – a historic area with century-old Victorian homes and shotgun houses. An officer reported a 'strong odor of alcoholic beverages' emanating from Smith, who admitted to consuming 'two bourbon pours neat' before getting behind the wheel. The former Louisville Cardinals star and NCAA champion then failed a field sobriety test before his blood-alcohol level of 0.073 was recorded, according to the arrest citation. That is technically below Kentucky 's 0.08 blood-alcohol limit, but state law permits charges for drivers with any level above 0.04 if there is 'other competent evidence' to consider, according to the Courier Journal. Smith has since been released on bond and will be due for an arraignment hearing on Wednesday at 9am. The New York native is best known to hoops fanatics as the scrappy 6-foot Louisville guard who, along with Peyton Siva, led coach Rick Pitino's Cardinals to a national championship in 2013 – a title the school has since vacated. In 2015, it was revealed that Louisville recruits were provided strippers and escorts between 2010 and 2014. One woman later claimed she was paid $100 to have sex with Smith, then a top recruit from Queens, New York's Archbishop Molloy. Smith would later deny that claim to the Courier Journal in 2016. He was never charged for any wrongdoing in the NCAA case against Louisville, which vacated the 2013 title and other achievements as part of its punishment. He would go on to be taken by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft but never really found a home in the league.

Top USC scorer Desmond Claude transfers to Washington

June 9 - Senior guard Desmond Claude, who led Southern California in scoring last season, said Sunday that he will be joining the Washington program. The 6-foot-6 Claude averaged 15.8 points, 4.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 33 games (32 starts) last season. He reportedly chose the Huskies over Alabama and Gonzaga. Claude announced his decision on Instagram. "After a long and thorough process of evaluating each school recruiting me, I have decided to sign at the University of Washington," Claude wrote. "I am a firm believer with the recruiting class coming in and the returning players, we can compete with the very best, which was very important to me. "I am excited to get to work with my new teammates and staff in Seattle Husky. Go Dawgs!!" The decision by Claude means both of USC's top two players transferred to Washington. Wesley Yates, who was second with a 14.1 scoring average and shot a stellar 43.9 percent from 3-point range as a freshman last season, announced his move to the Huskies in April. Last season was Claude's only one with the Trojans. He played his first two seasons at Xavier and enjoyed a breakout season in 2023-24 when he averaged 16.6 points and was named Big East Most Improved Player. Washington (13-18, 4-16 Big Ten) finished last in the 18-team Big Ten last season under first-year coach Danny Sprinkle. --Field Level Media
