Utility WEC Energy posts higher profit on strong residential sales

Reuters21 hours ago
July 30 (Reuters) - WEC Energy Group (WEC.N), opens new tab reported a 16% increase in second-quarter profit on Wednesday, as the utility company benefited from higher sales in its residential segment.
Power demand surged as extreme heat during the summer months drove up the use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners and refrigerators.
"A warm start to the summer, steady execution of our capital plan and a continued focus on operating efficiency were major factors that shaped a strong quarter," said CEO Scott Lauber.
The company, which provides electricity and gas to nearly 4.7 million customers in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota, said quarterly residential power use rose 1.6% and total retail deliveries increased 1% over the year earlier.
Electricity consumption by small commercial and industrial customers was 0.6% higher, while large commercial and industrial customers' usage increased 0.8%.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that power consumption in the country will hit record highs in 2025 and 2026 due to data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency, and as homes and businesses use more electricity and less fossil fuels for heating and transportation.
WEC's second-quarter operating revenue rose 13.4% to $2.01 billion, compared with analysts' average estimate of $1.76 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Total operating expense also rose about 14% to $1.6 billion, while interest expense was up 10% at $220.8 million.
The company's net income of $245.4 million, or 76 cents per share, was higher than the $211.3 million, or 67 cents per share, reported a year earlier.

Portugal's EDP raises 2025 targets after solid first half

LISBON, July 31 (Reuters) - Portugal's largest utility EDP ( opens new tab raised 2025 profit targets on Thursday after first-half earnings improved thanks to cost savings and higher electricity generation. EDP said it expected to make recurring net profit, which excludes capital gains on the sales of assets, of between 1.2 billion euros and 1.3 billion euros ($1.4-1.5 billion) this year, up from the previously estimated 1.2 billion euros. Recurring earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) in 2025 would be around 4.8 billion to 4.9 billion euros, up from previous guidance of 4.8 billion euros. EDP shares were little changed in early trading. "We had a good first half with solid (recurring) results, in operational terms ... with efficiency gains and cost reductions and this allowed us to improve our guidance for this year," Chief Executive Miguel Stilwell de Andrade told Reuters. In the first half, EDP's recurring net profit rose 27% to 752 million euros, and recurring EBITDA increased 7% to 2.6 billion euros. EDP said that total electricity generation increased 12% to 34.6 terawatt-hours, sustained by high rainfall in the Iberian peninsula, which filled reservoirs to 87% of their capacity, and by natural gas power plants. It said that after the major power outage in Spain and Portugal on April 28 production from gas plants was prioritised to strengthen the resilience of the electricity grid. The CEO said that for large grid investments needed in Iberia to materialise "it is crucial that regulators in Portugal and Spain, in their upcoming reviews, increase the rates of return on this asset base". He said the rates of return were now around 5.6% in both countries, but should be increased "to more reasonable levels", in line with other European countries where investments are rewarded with returns as high as 7.5%. As of June, EDP's installed capacity was 32.3 gigawatts, 11% more than a year earlier. ($1 = 0.8733 euros)

Shell profits down nearly a third after drop in oil prices

Profits at Shell fell by nearly a third in the last quarter as the energy company was hit by a fall in earnings from oil and gas. Shell reported on Thursday morning that its adjusted earnings dropped to $4.26bn in the second quarter of this year, 32% less than the $6.29bn it made in April-June 2024 when energy prices were higher. This beat City forecasts of a larger drop in profits to $3.7bn. Shell attributed the drop to 'lower trading and optimisation margins' as well as lower prices for oil and gas. At the end of June, Brent crude was trading below $68 a barrel, compared with more than $86 a barrel a year earlier. Despite the fall in profits and a rise in debt, Shell is continuing to pump money back to its investors through share buyback schemes. It announced it would spend $3.5bn buying back shares in the third quarter of the year. Shell's chief executive, Wael Sawan, said the company had delivered a strong operational performance in 'a less favourable macro environment'. He said: 'Our continued focus on performance, discipline and simplification helped deliver $3.9bn of structural cost reductions since 2022, with the majority delivered through non-portfolio actions. This focus enables us to commence another $3.5bn of buybacks for the next three months, the 15th consecutive quarter of at least $3bn in buybacks.' Shell's net debt increased to $43.21bn in the second quarter, up from $38.3bn a year earlier. Derren Nathan, the head of equity research at Hargreaves Lansdown, said a recent rise in oil prices should help Shell's financial performance improve in the third quarter of the year. 'Shell's second-quarter earnings hit a bit of an oil patch, with lower commodity prices, a weaker trading environment and unplanned downtime at its chemical plants all playing their part,' Nathan said. Shares in Shell rose 2.5% in early trading, to £27.45. Robin Wells, the director of Fossil Free London, a campaign group that protested outside Shell's headquarters on Wednesday night, said 'We are now in a new normal of record-breaking heat, created by corporations like Shell. This will mean devastation and mass loss of human life. Climate scientists have warned us that this new normal will spell the end of human civilisation by 2100. It's time for destruction to stop raising billions in profit.'
