Malaysia to develop ASEAN TVET certification and excellence hub
LONDON: Malaysia is forging strategic partnerships with international educational institutions and industry players, including those from the United Kingdom (UK), to develop a regionally recognised certification and centre of excellence for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government aims not only to produce skilled workers but also to position Malaysia as a credible TVET training and certification reference centre for the ASEAN region.
'To meet the demands of the ASEAN market, we have the ASEAN TVET Council, which we will activate not only for recognition purposes but also to attract students from ASEAN countries to pursue their studies at TVET institutions in Malaysia, without compromising opportunities for Malaysian students,' he said.
He said this after delivering a keynote address on TVET at University College London (UCL) here on Monday, which was attended by senior lecturers and students from the institution.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid added that he had engaged in discussions with several ASEAN ministers responsible for employment and regional cooperation on TVET development.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the chairman of the National TVET Committee, in his speech, said that Malaysia is prepared to become a global platform for producing world-class TVET talent, equipped to meet the demands of the industrial market.
'We are ready to lead, but we recognise that we cannot do it alone. We will achieve this through close collaboration with ASEAN, global partners, and Malaysians abroad who share the vision of building a skilled, competitive generation ready to face the future,' he said.
He also shared that student enrolment in TVET institutions rose to 436,285 last year, with 53.5 per cent of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) holders opting for TVET pathways.
He said this reflects a positive shift in public perception, as TVET is no longer seen as a second-choice option.
Ahmad Zahid also announced that Malaysia will host the 4th ASEAN TVET Council Regional Policy Dialogue this month, in conjunction with National TVET Day 2025.
Themed 'TVET untuk Kemajuan Luar Bandar dan Serantau' (TVET for Rural and Regional Development), the dialogue will bring together delegations from ASEAN, Australia, and Germany to explore how TVET can drive inclusive growth, empower youth, and develop rural communities, as well as foster innovation exchange, industry collaboration, and national transformation.

Brunei Sultan returns from Malaysia
Xinhua 04 Jun 2025, 15:45 GMT+10 BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The Sultan of Brunei Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah safely returned to Brunei on Tuesday, according to a local media report. According to the local daily Borneo Bulletin on Tuesday, the Sultan returned to Brunei with his consort, Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, after meeting Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. According to Brunei's Prime Minister's Office, during the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings in Malaysia last month, the Sultan had been feeling tired and was therefore advised by the host country's medical experts to rest at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur for several days. Brunei is a Sultanate located in the northern part of Borneo Island, with 346,500 citizens in 2024. The country is a major oil and gas producer in Southeast Asia.

Zahid hails London visit as bridge to reinforce Malaysia-UK ties
LONDON: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described his four-day working visit to the United Kingdom which concluded Wednesday as a bridge to strengthen bilateral relations. Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the visit, filled with discussions and programmes, differed from previous visits as he had the opportunity to personally witness the commitment of students sponsored by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) at University College London (UCL) during a session with them. "…we (delegation) saw their commitment not only to acquiring knowledge but also to acting as catalysts for Generation Z and Generation Alpha. When they come here and gain knowledge, then return to Malaysia, they will contribute not only to their professions but to other fields as well, providing motivation especially to Generation Alpha and the millennial generation," he told a press conference here upon the conclusion of his visit. Additionally, Zahid shared that Malaysia's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) received very positive feedback from the university and students who were excited about the government's game-changing initiatives. "…we are aware of the government's aim to create 60,000 high-tech engineering job opportunities, and we have requested for the Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes to be expedited," he said. Beyond TVET, the visit also strengthened cooperation in rural development, renewable energy, and climate resilience through Zahid's meeting with the UK's Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed. The meeting also discussed collaboration in rural transformation, disaster management, water security, and investments in green energy, including the reactivation of the Asean Power Grid. During the visit, Malaysia also proposed the use of green sukuk for climate financing and efforts to lead the global halal ecosystem through the World Halal Council and a unified halal logo. Both countries also reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing trade relations under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and through private sector cooperation. Through the Malaysia-UK franchise business dialogue held during the visit, Ahmad Zahid expressed hope that it would help Malaysian franchise brands penetrate the UK market by 2026. Zahid also expressed confidence that the launch of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VMY2026) in the UK would expand collaboration with UK industry players, including airlines, to attract more UK tourists to Malaysia.
