TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — South Carolina's reign as national champions is over, however the future remains promising for the Gamecocks under Dawn Staley, who has transformed her program into a perennial Final Four contender over the past decade.
While the team's bid for a fourth NCAA title in four years fell well short in an 82-59 loss to Paige Bueckers and UConn on Sunday, a talented core of players return next season when Staley will try to lead the Southeastern Conference champions to a sixth consecutive Final Four.

Despite coming off the bench, freshman Joyce Edwards (12.7 points) led the Gamecocks in scoring during the regular season. The teams other top scorers — sophomore MiLaysia Fulwiley (11.8) and junior Chloe Kitts (10.2) are underclassmen, too, and Staley has already bolstered the roster with a strong recruiting class led by Agot Makeer and Ayla McDowell.
'Our kids gave it all they had. When you can understand why you lost and when you've been on the other side of that three times, you understand it. You can swallow it," Staley said. "We lost to a very good basketball team.'
Junior Ashlyn Watkins is also making progress in recovering from a season-ending knee injury that's sidelined her since January.
The Gamecocks shot poorly in Sunday night. They also had no answers defensively for UConn's Big Three of Bueckers, Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd — who was named the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player.

After losing 87-58 at home to UConn on Feb. 16, South Carolina rattled off 12 straight wins before running out of gas Sunday.

One thing is guaranteed at the 2025 College World Series: A new champion will be crowned. For the first time in the super regional era, no team that reached the College World Series in 2024 will appear in the tournament this year. That's quite the turnaround, and should guarantee the field is more wide open than it's been in recent years, especially after reigning champion Tennessee was eliminated Sunday. Advertisement With the event completely up for grabs, which team will rise to the occasion and win it all? Here's everything you need to know about the 2025 College World Series. College World Series schedule The 2025 College World Series will begin Friday, June 13, and run through Monday, June 23 at the latest. Two games are scheduled each day from Friday, June 13 through Wednesday, June 18. The first game will start at 2 p.m. ET each of those days, with the second game starting at 7 p.m. ET. The College World Series has not released which teams will play in those games yet. If necessary, games will be played Thursday, June 19, ahead of the finals. Possible times have not been announced if games need to be played Thursday. Advertisement Game 1 of the finals is slated for Saturday, June 21 at 7 p.m. ET. Game 2 is scheduled for the following day, Sunday, June 22, at 2:30 p.m. ET. If a Game 3 is necessary, it will be played Monday, June 23, at 7:30 p.m. ET. College World Series location Since 1950, the College World Series has been held in Omaha, Nebraska. The event used to take place at the Rosenblatt Stadium. The College World Series was played in Kalamazoo for two years before it moved to Wichita, Kansas, in 1949. How many teams are in the College World Series? A total of eight teams advance to play in the College World Series in Omaha. Those eight teams are determined after a 64-team tournament featuring NCAA DI schools. Those final eight teams then play in two brackets, with the winners facing off in a best-of-three series in the finals. Is the College World Series double elimination? The College World Series is a double-elimination tournament. That means a team must lose two games before it's eliminated. Teams that lose their first-round games are put in an elimination bracket. One team eventually emerges from that bracket to play against the undefeated team in their bracket. An undefeated team must lose twice to get eliminated, which is why "if necessary" games are scheduled for June 19. If an undefeated team gets upset in Game 1, the second game will likely occur on June 19. Advertisement Once the finals begin, the two remaining teams will play a best-of-three series. The team that wins two games will be the champion. College World Series channel, how to watch 2025 event ESPN will broadcast nearly every single game of the College World Series. There are a few exceptions in 2025, however. The 7 p.m. ET game on Sunday, June 15, will air over on ESPN2, likely due to "Sunday Night Baseball." Game 2 of the finals will air on ABC. That contest is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 22. If a Game 3 is necessary in the finals, ESPN will broadcast that game.

Newcomers out, or limited, for first Purdue basketball practice: 3 things we learned
WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue basketball big man Trey Kaufman-Renn looks up and down the roster and struggles to find a weakness for a preseason national championship favorite. He's eager to finally experience that much-anticipated squad in its complete form. Summer practice began Monday without two of the Boilermakers' biggest offseason additions. South Dakota State transfer center Oscar Cluff is waiting on his renewed visa to arrive so he can board a plane from Australia. He is expected in West Lafayette soon. Incoming freshman guard Omer Mayer remains overseas, as he will play with Team Israel at the FIBA Under-19 World Cup in Switzerland later this month. As a result, his own visa process is less time-urgent. Another incoming transfer, former North Florida forward Liam Murphy, participated in a limited capacity. Purdue coach Matt Painter said Murphy is not expected to be fully cleared from shoulder surgery until the fall. "It's going to take time to get people in different systems, especially the way that we play," Kaufman-Renn said. "We play a little bit differently than a lot of other teams, so it'll take time for it to be perfect. But from what I've heard, what I've seen as far as their film. I think they'll fit right in." Here are three things we learned from Monday's practice on Cardinal Court: Second-year center Daniel Jacobsen will soon depart for the Team USA training camp to compete for a spot in the same FIBA Under-19 World Cup where Mayer will play. Monday, though provided the first public look at Jacobsen participating in full-contact action since the broken tibia which ended his freshman season after two games. Beefing up his 7-foot-4 frame had always been part of his freshman plan. Sitting out most of the season accidentally helped that process. "I feel a lot better, a lot bigger," said Jacobsen, who crashed to the floor a few times and bounced right back up. "I feel like I'm not getting moved around as much." Raleigh Burgess remains out after offseason leg surgery and may not participate this summer. The decision not to use a redshirt season with him last season drew the most attention because it came down to the start of the season. Last season's other redshirt decision will lead to a bigger role for Jack Benter. The Brownstown Central grad was somewhat out of sight, out of mind last season while sitting out. Now he'll fight to earn guard rotation minutes and can also play the 4 in smaller lineups. "He's got good length, good size," Painter said. "He can stretch the defense. He knows how to play." Painter called Monday's practice a "glorified pickup game." Yet it's an important first step for freshman guard Antione West Jr., the player with the steepest learning curve. That freshman initiation can be a tough process for those coming in with a big class. Coming in with a small one amplifies the corrective focus of the coaching staff. West was merely getting his feet wet Monday. The NCAA allows up to eight weeks of required summer activities. Of the eight allowed hours per week, no more than four can be spent on skill instruction such as drills and film sessions. The rest of the time can go toward weightlifting and conditioning.
