KZN Tourism MEC says Drakensberg cable car project being fast-tracked after lengthy delays
The project has been on the cards for several years but is yet to get off the ground.
Edtea MEC Musa Zondi said: "While we understand the delays that have been experienced with respect to the much-anticipated Cable Car Project, which is to be located strategically in Okhahlamba - in the majestic Drakensberg, we are doing everything in our power to fast-track the take-off for this project without further delays."
Zondi was addressing members of the Legislature while tabling his budget recently.
He said, "This is not a standard domestic tourism development; it is a cross-border initiative involving two countries (South Africa and Lesotho) and two provinces (KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State). Understandably, this has made coordination complex and, at times, slow."
"But we are making progress. We are not working in isolation as KwaZulu-Natal or South Africa. Rather, we will be actively engaging our counterparts to move toward a shared agreement and coordinated implementation. We realise that it has not been easy, but we hope to find each other, and we in KwaZulu-Natal are committed to seeing this iconic, job-creating and destination-defining project through."
During the presentation, the MEC also spoke of the need to boost other tourist sites. He said, "Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is one of KwaZulu-Natal's jewels and strategic assets. We are committed to rebuilding it through financial injection and restructuring, strategic leadership, integration into the biodiversity economy, and alignment with ecotourism objectives."

Enhancing disaster response in KwaZulu-Natal through community partnerships

These partnerships promote an inclusive, well-coordinated, and responsive disaster management system within the province, remarked Dr Joey Krishnan, the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) acting HOD. Krishnan was speaking on Friday, at a presentation to the KZN Legislature Cogta portfolio committee on the disaster management report. She said the social partners assist Cogta with various types of support, relief material, food, blankets, as well as specialised training, and they come to the front when there are disasters. She said the collaboration was aimed at enhancing disaster management operations across the province. The presentation to the committee highlighted grants transferred to the various municipalities, post-disaster grants, and progress on the grant expenditure and implementation. Next Stay Close ✕ As a result, several Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC), projects have been deferred to the 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 financial years. Krishnan said that despite these constraints, a R2 million allocation has been made for the 2025/2026 financial year to support the maintenance of integrated communication systems. She said that the cooperation agreements signed on 20 February significantly strengthened the KZN PDMC's capacity across all phases of disaster management. The national DMC transferred grants to municipalities to repair damaged infrastructure due to disaster-related incidents. These include the disaster response grant, which is implemented within six months, and the disaster reconstruction and rehabilitation grant, implemented within 12 months. The total funding received by KZN municipalities between 2019 and 2025 was R4.1 billion. 'The PDMC also collects a comprehensive portfolio of evidence during project implementation, including business/implementation plans, GPS coordinates, photographs, reports, receipts, and close-out reports,' Krishnan said. According to the report, the main challenges identified were compliance-related and implementation related issues. Compliance-related issues include the non-submission of monthly reports, the submission of reports that fail to meet compliance requirements, and the failure to provide supporting documents, such as proof of payments. One of the recurring impediments to effective project implementation is the presence of internal challenges in addressing Supply Chain Management (SCM) issues. Bonginkosi Mngadi, MPL Umkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP) suggested that the portfolio committee receive a close-out report for the monies that are allocated to the municipalities meant to assist society. 'There is a tendency that when the money gets allocated for a disaster and the project does not get finished, only to find that the money is gone. It will be vital if we start managing the issue of close-out reports so that we get value for money,' he said. Marlaine Nair, Cogta portfolio committee chairperson said that the department of Cogta must find an additional budget to be able to do much more in the province in terms of preparation for disaster preparedness and prevention. 'We have suggested collaboration with the private sector. After all, it is in the interest of everyone, especially businesses, that as a province we have the best possible plan and system in place when a disaster strikes. We are also concerned about disaster grant spending in the various municipalities and have called for close-out reports on the various projects. We must ensure that grants spent on rebuilding are used to build better,' she said.

Ematsheni redevelopment in Pietermaritzburg city centre: R18 million project to boost informal economy

Image: Supplied The crime-infested site Ematsheni in Pietermaritzburg's CBD is set to be redeveloped with the intention of revitalising the area for informal economic activity, at an estimated total cost of R18 million. About R4m has been made available for the first phase of the project, which could start as early as September. The contractor for the project is expected to be appointed by next month. Officials from the Msunduzi Municipality, who are leading the project, provided details on it when they appeared before the Economic Development Committee in the provincial legislature this week. This meeting followed an oversight visit by committee members to the area. The first phase of the development is funded by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs. The Ematsheni Beerhall structures were demolished around 2017 after the property was overrun by criminal activity. The vacant land at the site has continued to be a subject of concern due to ongoing criminal activities. Phindile Zondi, manager of Economic Planning & Infrastructure under Development Services (LED) in the municipality, briefed the committee on the work underway and the expectations for the project. She said technical work on the project, in terms of consulting, costing and planning, is nearing completion. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading 'The municipality has sought funding to rebuild the area and ensure that the people who were operating there legally have a new area where they can operate,' she said, adding that as a result the municipality applied to the provincial government to rebuild the site and received about R3m in funding. The approval came with the condition that the municipality also had to contribute R1m of its own funds. The scope of the project includes various elements, including a taxi rank, after they had been approached by the South African National Taxi Council. The project will have three phases. Phase one involves the construction of 90 training stalls, storage facilities, ablution facilities, and other trading facilities. The subsequent phases will include the building of a taxi rank and other assets. 'Once completed, the area will feature a ground floor and a first floor, with the first floor designated as a taxi rank and the ground floor used for commercial space,' Zondi explained. 'We are looking for an anchor tenant. We believe that having a stronger anchor tenant will help manage and secure the facility, making it safer for those using it." Zondi mentioned that much more is required to complete the overall project, which is estimated to cost around R18m. She added that they had been able to source additional funding from the National Treasury for the other phases of the project. Speaking on when the construction work will get underway, she said they will be appointing a contractor soon from the municipal panel of building contractors. This should be concluded by August for phase one, with work commencing on-site by September. Phase one is expected to take nine months and should be completed by 2026. Economic Development Committee member Super Zuma expressed scepticism about the project, stating, "From what I am seeing, the scope of what had been promised has drastically reduced from what was presented before, and I am sceptical. What guarantees do we have that what you are promising now will be delivered?" Chairperson of the committee, Mafika Mndebele, stated that the Portfolio Committee on Economic Development and Tourism convened the engagement with representatives from Msunduzi to assess progress on key community-based economic projects. 'We are encouraged by the reports presented and the commitments made by all stakeholders. The committee is satisfied that these projects are on track and continuing as planned. 'They are already demonstrating tangible benefits for the local economy, particularly in creating opportunities for SMMEs, advancing township and rural enterprise development, and supporting inclusive local economic growth. 'These are not just infrastructure projects — they are instruments of economic justice and empowerment. They bring services closer to the people, stimulate job creation, and activate local supply chains that help small businesses to thrive. 'We will continue to exercise robust oversight to ensure that the impact of these projects reaches all intended beneficiaries and that any delays or implementation challenges are swiftly resolved.'
