Q&A: Allisha Gray on teaming up with Brittney Griner and WNBA's WNBA's mentorship program
Atlanta Dream guard Allisha Gray's million-watt smile and her warm personality are impossible to miss.
Gray is starting her ninth season in the WNBA and third with the Dream. After winning a championship with coach Dawn Staley in college, she turned her sights to the pro level, stacking the accolades along the way. Gray is a two-time WNBA All-Star and also won Rookie of the Year in 2017. She even did something last season that no other WNBA player has ever done: win the WNBA 3-Point Contest and Skills Challenge in the same night.
By Gray's admission, the honors on her resumé are only a small portion of her story. The South Carolina native says that most people don't know the real her. They only know the basketball side, and that if people really knew her story, they would understand just how resilient she's been through every obstacle in her life. It's why she's recently partnered with the WNBA and its Changemaker Collective to be part of VOICEINSPORT (VIS), a platform dedicated to increasing access, visibility and virtual mentorship for young girls.
"I just feel like I can help out a lot of girls and women," Gray told For The Win. "I feel like I'm a positive person. I've been through a lot. I'm pretty sure what they've gone through mentally and physically on the court, I can help them feel comfortable and overcome it."
Ahead of the 2025 WNBA season, For The Win sat down with the Dream star to discuss why mentoring young athletes means so much to her, how it feels to have Brittney Griner as her teammate, and so much more from her packed offseason.
This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.
Why was it important for you to join the WNBA's VIS initiative?
I realized being a woman athlete, it's important to have mentors growing up ...
It's always comfortable having that person you can talk to because you don't always want to talk to your parents about everything. So, it's always good to have that non-biased person that you can talk to, and they keep it real with you.
What was the most underrated part of Unrivaled?
I'll probably say the competitiveness. The competitiveness was very fun. I enjoyed the trash talk and just being competitive and going out there to compete and playing hard every night.Shoot, I done played against everybody so none of them was really a surprise. Somebody that's working on their trash talk that [Courtney Williams] is helping is [Napheesa Collier].
Has it sunk in yet that Brittney Griner joined the Atlanta Dream?
It's cool. I mean, I've known B.G. for quite a while. So, I always had a relationship with her through USA Basketball and stuff like that.
But, I mean, I'll have to see her in training camp, on the same court as me ― on the same side as me ― for me to let it sink in that she's my teammate. I know she's my teammate, but it's just ... I'll feel more settled in when I see her in the uniform. So, that's exciting.
How did it feel being one of the first to own A'ja Wilson's A'One shoes?
That's just the perks of being the best friend of the person of the shoe. You know I'll take my perks, and I really love the shoe. The shoe is very comfortable. You know, I just got little perks, and I love the perks
Are you aware of people calling you adorable, and where does that joy come from?
I'm just a smiling, happy person ... I'm me. I always smiled and cheesed.
Growing up, I was a smiling person. But I am aware of all the "cute" and "adorable" things that people say. It's funny, but yeah. I've always been like this ― a giggly person.
We heard you're a picky eater. What's your food hot take?
I'm a texture person. It is a lot of foods out there that I don't like. I stick with the main food groups of chicken, salmon steak. That's pretty much my three go-to meat-wise.
How would you describe your relationship with Rhyne Howard using a song or food?
Food-wise, I'm going five-star meal ― shoot, to describe our friendship. We have a great friendship. I'll say a good, nice steak at a Michelin-star restaurant.

Fan Sends Strong Message After Caitlin Clark Makes Daughter Cry
Fan Sends Strong Message After Caitlin Clark Makes Daughter Cry originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark picked up where she left off after her Rookie of the Year season, starting the new WNBA season by averaging 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 9.3 assists through four games. Advertisement However, she suffered a left quadriceps strain during the fourth game, sidelining her for at least two weeks. The 23-year-old has already missed three games but provided an update on her status Thursday. 'I've made a lot of progress and I feel good, but I'm not going to rush my way back if it's not worth it," Clark said. In the meantime, Clark has been sitting next to head coach Stephanie White during games, soaking in what she can. Her pregame routine while she has been out hasn't changed, though — she still makes her rounds before warm-ups, signing autographs and taking photos with fans. In the post, she added a long message, sharing that her daughter, Chandler, was brought to "literal tears" after an autograph and picture from Clark. "What a Trip! This trip exceeded everything we had hoped for dove into all things @indianafever to get the FULL experience. Chandler got to see all the players warm up, got waves, pictures with her favorites, and autographs! We even got to shoot a shot on the court! An autograph AND picture with Caitlin brought Chandler to literal tears!!! Truly an unbelievable experience and we are so blessed to have been able take Chandler on this trip and make memories we will remember forever! 🏀 ❤️💙💛 Go @indianafever! We are rooting for yall to make it all the way!!" Advertisement Note: Swipe to the second photo to see Chandler crying. Clark was once a "young girl" and understands how impactful she can be for fans. She has spoken about why she signs autographs and takes photos. "I was that young girl at one point in my life, and I'm only 23 years old, so it feels like it was just a short time ago," Clark said. "So I can definitely empathize for what they're feeling and what they're going through, but also a lot of people spend a lot of time and money and resources to be able to have an opportunity to come watch this team play or come watch me play. "I certainly understand that, and I try to make as much time as I can to sign an autograph because that can really impact somebody's life," Clark added. "Who knows? Maybe they're going to put that up in their room and look at it every single day and have something to dream about." WNBA Announces Big Mystics News After Fever Game
WNBA Announces Big Mystics News After Fever Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever finally got a win on Tuesday night. After losing three in a row, the Caitlin Clark-less Fever secured an 85-76 victory against the Washington Mystics to improve to 3-4 in the season. Advertisement It was Kelsey Mitchell who led the charge for Indiana with a game-high 24 points, two rebounds, three assists, two steals and four triples in 32 minutes of action. The Mystics, on the other hand, got strong performances from their rookies, Kiki Iriafen (20 points, nine rebounds) and Sonia Citron (13 points, seven boards), but it still wasn't enough to carry Washington to victory. It was a noteworthy effort from the Mystics' rookies, though, which prompted an announcement from the WNBA shortly after the final buzzer. Following their strong performances against Indiana, Iriafen and Citron have now scored in double digits in their first eight WNBA games. "This rookie duo isn't lettin' up🔥Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron become the first rookies since A'ja Wilson (2018) to open their careers with 8+ straight double-digit scoring games," the league posted on Instagram. Advertisement View the original article to see embedded media. The fact that Iriafen and Citron have been mentioned in the same breath as three-time league MVP A'ja Wilson — by the WNBA, no less — is an incredible feat in itself. Wilson has reached unprecedented heights since winning Rookie of the Year in 2018, and it appears that both Iriafen and Citron are blazing a similar path. The Washington rookies have been very impressive so far this season. Entering Tuesday's contest against the Fever, Iriafen, the No. 4 overall pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft has averaged 13.9 points and 10.1 rebounds in 28.4 minutes of action. The third pick of the draft came into Tuesday's games with averages of 14.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.7 triples in 30.9 minutes per contest.
