New York town official facing charges after shooting lost DoorDash driver, police say

A New York town official is facing a slew of charges after allegedly shooting a DoorDash delivery driver who was lost and looking for directions in the town of Chester last week, police said.
The DoorDash driver suffered serious, nonfatal injuries, New York State Police said in a statement released Sunday. As of Tuesday, the victim remained hospitalized after undergoing surgery, CNN affiliate WABC reported.
It marks the latest instance of someone in the US being shot after making an apparently innocent mistake, like ringing the wrong doorbell or pulling into the wrong driveway.
According to New York police, the driver had attempted to deliver food to a residence in the Valerie Drive neighborhood in Chester last Friday. Chester is roughly 50 miles north of Manhattan.
The driver, who police didn't identify, struggled to find the exact location and approached several homes asking for directions before arriving at the residence of John Reilly III, the town's highway superintendent, police said.
Reilly then told the driver to get off his property before firing multiple rounds at the victim as he attempted to leave in his vehicle, according to police. The driver was shot once in the back, police said, 'causing serious physical injuries.'
The driver was provided with the 'correct consumer address' in the Dasher app, but he went to the wrong house, DoorDash told CNN in a statement. The delivery was due for roughly 10 p.m. Friday and in 'a rural location,' the company said.
'No one should ever fear for their safety just for trying to make deliveries in their neighborhood,' DoorDash said in the statement.
'We're devastated by this senseless act of violence, and we're praying for a full and speedy recovery. We'll continue to work closely with law enforcement as they investigate this tragic incident.'
A relative of the victim told WABC the driver 'thought his life was over.' He was so scared that he first stopped at a gas station after the incident, before driving dozens of miles away to his home in Middletown, the relative said.
'Yes, the situation makes us angry, but we're just very grateful that he's alive, and we want this guy to get the punishment he deserves because he tried to kill him,' the relative told WABC.
Reilly, a federally licensed firearms dealer, has been charged with assault in the first degree, the criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and the criminal possession of a firearm, according to police.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 9 in the Town of Chester Court.
CNN has reached out to New York State police and Chester police for further details.
Other similar cases of someone being shot after approaching a home for innocent reasons have resulted in criminal convictions.
Last year, a 66-year-old man was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for fatally shooting a woman in a car that mistakenly drove up his driveway in rural New York.
Homeowner Kevin Monahan claimed he was protecting his wife and was concerned about past criminal activity in his neighborhood when he lost his balance on some nails and fired the fatal shot at Kaylin Gillis, 20, from his porch in April 2023.
Gillis was killed just days after a Black teenager in Kansas City was shot twice by a White homeowner after going to the wrong address to pick up his siblings.
The now-deceased shooter Andrew Lester pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree assault in the shooting of then-16-year-old Ralph Yarn.

Three arrested after trespassing near Hiawatha Lake
Jun. 10—MOSES LAKE — Friday afternoon, three people were arrested after they re-entered the site previously known as Hiawatha Homeless Camp, near Hiawatha Lake, in the 1200 block of North Frontage Road East. "We've had deputies patrolling the area," Grant County Public Information Officer Kyle Foreman said. "They've made contact with people who are found on the property. The Colville Confederated Tribes have made it clear that there shouldn't be anybody on the property. The three arrested Friday are part of the group of people that trespassed last month. So, because they'd already been given a trespass notice last month warning them not to return, they were arrested for second-degree criminal trespassing, which is a misdemeanor." The three arrested included Raymond Lazier, 52; Michelle L. Jenkins, 56; and Joseph R. Jenkins. They were lodged in Grant County Jail for investigation of second-degree criminal trespassing. Foreman said if people return after receiving a warning and a second-degree trespassing citation, they could receive a first-degree trespassing citation, which is a gross misdemeanor. Foreman said this isn't the first call they have received in regard to people being back at the site. He explained the spot has been a problem for the last handful of years, after the county trespassed people from the Moses Lake Sand Dunes. "Hiawatha homeless camp started attracting occupants around the same time that the county trespassed people from the Moses Lake Sand Dunes, a few years ago," Foreman said. "They continued to be a public nuisance and a public safety hazard. Then complaints of crime happening within the homeless camp and crimes being committed by occupants of the homeless camp — including burglaries, other crimes and several fires that started at the camp and threatened nearby property." The property is owned by the Colville Confederated Tribes. Foreman said the Colville Confederated Tribes reached out to GCSO asking for people to be removed from the camp. GCSO deputies, on May 7, showed up to the camp and trespassed on the people living on the land. Prior to the deputies' arrival to trespass people, Foreman said there were more than 50 trailers at the site. "It's the tribe's property and they asked us to help remove people by issuing trespassing notices to help them remove the trespassers from the property," Foreman said. "Last month and over the past couple of weeks, we've received reports of people starting to accumulate again back out at the Hiawatha site." Foreman wants to remind residents that nobody should be out at the property and the tribe has specifically asked for anyone found at the location to be trespassed. "We will continue to patrol the area and make sure if people are found at the property, if they haven't been previously warned, they will be given notice that they're on private property, they shouldn't be here," Foreman said. "If they are someone that we've issued a trespass notice to previously, then they were already warned, and they can be arrested for criminal trespassing." Foreman said if residents of nearby areas notice people located in this area, they should contact 911 and report it.

Former San Rafael paraeducator suspected of sexually assaulting student in 2023
San Rafael Police on Tuesday said they arrested a former paraeducator on suspicion of sexually assaulting a student in 2023. Police identified the suspect as 22-year-old San Rafael resident Isai Nicodemo Rodas. The alleged incidents happened in late 2023 while Rodas worked as a paraeducator, similar to a teacher's assistant, at Marin's Community School in San Rafael, police said. Police said they learned during their investigation that Rodas initiated inappropriate contact with a student, and he is suspected of sexually assaulting the student on at least three separate occasions off-campus. Rodas was 20 when the alleged sexual assaults happened, and the victim was 16, according to police. The Police Department became aware of the alleged incidents when the Marin County Office of Education contacted them on June 6 — Marin's Community School is a Marin County Office of Education program. The Education Office told investigators as soon as they learned of it, police said. Rodas left the MCOE in June 2024 and joined the San Rafael City School Board of Education in December. Police said that while he is part of the Education Board, he has never worked for San Rafael City Schools. There have been no reports of misconduct involving SRCS students, police said. The SCRS Administration and Board is working to suspend Rodas from his responsibilities indefinitely while the investigation is ongoing. Rodas was booked on suspicion of sexual assault with a minor with three years of age difference, child molesting and sexual battery, police said.
