Search efforts continue for 2nd day to find 5 missing on sunken fishing trawler
Search and rescue efforts were under way for the second day Monday after a fishing trawler carrying 14 people on board sank in waters off the southern coast, leaving five people dead and five others missing.
The Coast Guard said it was conducting an around-the-clock search to find the five people still missing, with the help of 21 patrol ships, four aircraft, three Navy ships and 15 private fishing boats.
Authorities were also carrying out search efforts around the sunken ship at 80 meters underwater using Remotely Operated Vehicles.
On Sunday, the 139-ton vessel suddenly disappeared from radar, before the Coast Guard located the ship hours later in waters 17 kilometers east of the island of Habaek, near Yeosu, some 315 km south of Seoul.
Five South Koreans have died, including the ship's 66-year-old captain, while the five missing are three South Koreans, one Indonesian and one Vietnamese.
Four other crew members -- two Vietnamese and two Indonesians -- survived.
The Coast Guard is looking into the cause of the accident as there was no distress call from the fishing trawler. (Yonhap)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The crew of a cargo ship carrying 3,000 vehicles to Mexico, including 800 electric vehicles, abandoned ship after they could not control a fire aboard the vessel in waters off Alaska's Aleutian island chain. Adak is about 1,930 km west of Anchorage, the state's largest city. The crew initiated emergency firefighting procedures with the ship's onboard fire suppression system. But they were unable bring the flames under control. 'The relevant authorities have been notified, and we are working closely with emergency responders with a tug being deployed to support salvage and firefighting operations,' Zodiac Maritime said in a statement. 'Our priorities are to ensure the continued safety of the crew and protect the marine environment.' The US Coast Guard said it sent aircrews to Adak and a ship to the area. The status of the fire onboard the ship was unknown as of Wednesday afternoon, but smoke was still emanating from it, according to the Coast Guard. Rear Admiral Megan Dean, commander of the Coast Guard's Seventeenth District, said in a statement that as the search and rescue part of the response concluded, the Coast Guard was working with Zodiac Maritime to determine how to recover the ship and what will be done with it. More than 80% of international trade by volume now arrives by sea, and the largest container vessels are longer than three football fields.

Lee to take oath of office at National Assembly
President Lee Jae-myung will be sworn in office and deliver an inaugural address at a scaled-down ceremony at the National Assembly on Wednesday, his office said.
