PV Sindhu vs Unnati Hooda at China Open, Head-to-Head, timing and more: In a generational clash, can the youngster pull off an upset?
Meanwhile, Unnati has steadily climbed the ladder and is India's No 3 now, ranked No 35 in the world. Unnati has had a decent year on the tour, finding her feet while competing at the senior level, as she reached the semifinals at Taipei Open, where she incidentally lost against Miyazaki, despite holding a decent lead in the opening game. She had also reached the quarterfinal at German Open, where former junior world champion Riko Gunji defeated her in a marathon.
In Lucknow last year at the Syed Modi Super 300, Unnati didn't know who she would be meeting in the semifinal when she was speaking to reporters after her quarterfinal win against USA's Ishika Jaiswal. But she had a fair idea as PV Sindhu was leading in her match. Unnati was excited about the prospect of the first meeting against the legendary figure of Indian badminton. 'I guess it will be Sindhu di, and it will be my first ever meeting against her,' the 17-year-old from Rohtak beamed. 'I am really excited. I have been in the Uber Cup team with her. She has achieved so much in her career, she is an idol for every young Indian shuttler.'
On the international circuit, Sindhu and Unnati have played just once: at Syed Modi Super 300 in Lucknow last year. Despite offering some brief glimpses of her talent, Unnati just couldn't land any sustained punches on Sindhu who won 21-12 21-9 in just 36 minutes. 'She was quite attacking,' Unnati recalled about that match. 'You got to have a very good defense to pick her smashes. But there is a chance. There are areas. I need to be strategically at my best.' Ashwini Ponnappa, India's doubles legend, was commentating during that match and felt that Unnati would have been better off not going for the lines repeatedly and instead of pushing too hard for winners, could try to keep the shuttle in play. In what has been very drifty conditions so far in Changzhou, that could well be the key for the youngster: to control the errors.
'I try to keep it same whether I'm playing No 1 or No 2. Stick to the plan. I'm not taking pressure to be the next Sindhu. It's my own distinct journey. I definitely need to achieve what they did, but I'm aware it will be a difficult journey. But uniquely mine,' Unnati Hooda had said in a recent interview to The Indian Express
The match is estimated to begin at 1.10 pm IST and will be played as the ninth match on Court 2. With only 8 matches on Court 2 scheduled for official broadcast, this match will be streamed live on BWF TV's YouTube channel.

754 and out – Shubman Gill ends stunning series 20 runs short of Sunil Gavaskar's record
Shubman Gill may have scored just 11 runs in the second innings of the fifth Test, after scoring 21 in the first, which may not be noteworthy numbers but they have brought to an end a stunning series with the bat. Gill has ended the series with a tally of 754 runs, which is the second highest tally of all time for an Indian in any Test series, only behind Sunil Gavaskar's 774 against the mighty West Indies in a five-Test series in 1971. Gavaskar had played only four matches in that series, having made his debut only in the second Test. Gill, meanwhile, has achieved this feat on his debut as India's Test captain. He is also just the third Indian to score more than 700 runs in a single series after Gavaskar and his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had scored 712 runs in a five-Test series at home against England in 2023/24. Gill's tally is also the second highest for a captain in any Test series, only 56 runs behind the record of 810 held by the legendary Don Bradman, who had scored that against England at home in the 1936/37 Ashes. Conversely, it is the highest score by any Indian captain in a Test series by a margin of of 22 runs – Gavaskar held the record previous for the 732 he scored in the six-Test series against the West Indies in 1978/79. Gill fell in the first innings of the first Test after going for a single that was never there. In the second innings, Gill fell off the very first ball of the second session, being trapped in front of his stumps by an inswinger from Gus Atkinson. The only Tests in which Gill failed to score centuries in this series were both in London – the third Test at Lord's and the fifth Test at the Oval. Gill started the series by scoring a century on his captaincy debut. He scored 147 in his very first innings as the skipper, followed by a score of eight in the second innings. Gill then made merry in the second Test, scoring a record 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second as he powered India to a 336-run win at Edgbaston. He then could only manage scores of 16 and six in the third Test and 12 in the first innings of the fourth before grinding out 103 runs off 238 balls as part of a match-saving effort with KL Rahul. Rahul and Gill batted out nearly 70 overs after which unbeaten centuries by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar helped India draw the match. This was followed by the 21 and 11 he scored at the Oval.

Akash Deep Slams Maiden Test Fifty To Script History, Joins Shane Warne In Elite List For Rare Test Record
Akash Deep frustrated England with the bat and scripted history after scoring his maiden Test half-century on Day 3 of the fifth Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval on Saturday. Sent in as a nightwatchman late on day two, Akash Deep resumed his innings at the score of 4 on day three and played an extraordinary knock in the first session, scoring 66 off 94 balls with the help of 12 boundaries. He was eventually dismissed by Jamie Overton towards the end of the first session with a short ball. Akash Deep's 66 is the second-highest score by an Indian nightwatchman in Test cricket. Notably, the highest score by an Indian nightwatchman is Amit Mishra's 84 against England, which the leg-spinner hit at the same venue in 2011. Highest Scores By Indian Nightwatchmen In Test Cricket 84 - Amit Mishra vs England, Oval, 2011 66 - Akash Deep vs England, Oval, 2025 54 - Chetan Sharma vs Australia, Adelaide, 1985 50 - Amit Mishra vs Bangladesh - Chattogram, 2010 After his fantastic half-century, Akash Deep joined legendary Shane Warne in an elite list. The 28-year-old became only the second man after Shane Warne this century to score a fifty and take a 10-wicket haul in England as an opposition player. Former Australia spinner Warne achieved this rare feat in 2005. Interestingly, there are only five instances of an Asian player achieving this double in a SENA country. Asian Players To Score 50 And Take 10-Wicket Haul In A SENA Series Akash Deep, IND tour of ENG, 2025 Chaminda Vaas, SL tour of NZ, 1994/95 Wasim Akram, PAK tour of AUS, 1989/90 Imran Khan, PAK tour of ENG, 1987 Intikhab Alam, PAK tour of ENG, 1972/73 After his impressive batting, Akash Deep has a golden opportunity to make a noticeable impact with the ball during England's second innings of the ongoing fifth Test at Lord's.
