Dramatic cut in parking spaces on new housing estates in Midlothian

Parking spaces on new housing estates and other developments in Midlothian are set to be dramatically cut in a bid to crackdown on private car use.
New parking standards for developers in the county reduce the number of visitor spaces required in new residential site from one for every two houses to no more than one for every 20 homes.
And they will reduce the number of spaces for users of new sports facilities with golf courses to be told they can have no more than two spaces per hole and any stadium built with over 1500 capacity allowed no more than one space for every 150 seats.
A report due to go before Midlothian Council's planning committee next week for agreement says the new standards have been influenced by the Scottish Government's goal of reducing private car use.
It says previous policy which advised developers the minimum number of spaces required for housing will be replaced with new rules setting out the maximum allowed.
It will reduce the number of visitor spaces at residential estates to just five per cent of the number of homes – one in 20 – in towns with rural developments allowed up to 10 per cent.
The report says: 'A consequence of the proposed new parking standards is that provision of car parking will be reduced across new developments,
including in new residential developments.
'The parking standard will apply across a whole development; it will therefore be incumbent on those developing proposals to accommodate the parking standards within the design of the whole development.'
As well as reducing the number of visitor parking spaces allowed, the new standards also require that 10 per cent of those provided have an electric charger in place, however to qualify for that in towns the development would have to have at least 200 new homes built.
The report says the new parking standards were put through a 'targeted consultation' which involved community councils, Homes for Scotland and internal sections of the council.
They cover new build larger stadiums which face a change of one parking space for every 15 seats to one for every 150 seats swimming pools being allowed a maximum of one space per 25 square metres when it used to be a minimum of one every 10 square metres and golf courses reduced from two and a half spaces per hole to two spaces.
Minimum cycle parking places and EV charger spaces will also be introduced across all new developments. Councillors will be asked to agree to the new standards next week.

Donald Trump has touched down in Aberdeenshire – with his children and grandchildren – ahead of crunch talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and First Minister John Swinney. The 79-year-old politician raised a fist aloft to gathered media representatives as he stepped off a military helicopter at his Balmedie estate. The US president has been on a four-day trip in Scotland, beginning with a stay at his Turnberry resort where he enjoyed some golf on Saturday. Combining pleasure with business, he met the President of European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen while there and agreed a new trade deal. He is now expected to have 'private engagement' with the prime minister before meeting First Minister John Swinney as well. A highlight of his trip, however, is the opening of the second Trump International Golf Links course, which son Eric previously said would be 'one of the best in the world'. The two leaders arrived at RAF Lossiemouth at around 6pm on Monday, following a busy day at Turnberry. During a press briefing there, President Trump backed North Sea oil and gas following desperate pleas from north-east business leaders for the billionaire's backing. The pair landed at the Moray airbase in Air Force One, and from there boarded the Marine One helicopter to the Menie Estate. The copter touched down on a helipad just yards from MacLeod House, the lodge at the resort named after the US leader's Scottish mum. Bagpipers from Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen greeted Donald Trump as he arrived in Aberdeenshire shortly before 7pm, with Keir Starmer by his side. Uniformed servicemen saluted the leaders as they stepped off the aircraft, while Mr Trump saluted back before raising a triumphant fist as he greeted onlookers. It came just hours after protestors gathered at Balmedie to demonstrate against the president, with police lining the beach to prevent any from climbing the dunes onto the golf course. As well as official business however, this trip appears to be a family affair for the president as Donald Trump's children and grandchildren were spotted arriving in Aberdeenshire too. Donald Junior was seen stepping off a US helicopter along with Eric and their spouses. The president's grandchildren Tristan and Chloe exchanged high fives with Donald Junior on the lawn. Guests there for the occasion included Scottish golfing great Colin Montgomerie, who is hosting the PGA Seniors Championship at Menie later this week. Aberdeenshire aristocrat and businessman George Aberdeen was on hand too to greet Donald Trump. Mr Aberdeen is the founder and managing partner of Kinrise, a UK real-estate company that works to revitalise historic buildings and bring them back into use. His family has been looking after the Haddo Estate in Tarves for more than 550 years. John Swinney will also join the two leaders at a private dinner on Tuesday night. A Scottish Government spokesman said the dinner would 'provide the First Minister with an opportunity to advance the interests of Scotland to the President of the United States'.

Twice a year, the quiet idyll of a working farm in secluded woodland near the River Don is shattered by speeding cars as the Fintray Hillclimb roars into action. 2025 marks an incredible 60 years of the motorsport event, which has attracted generations of petrolheads to the former Fintray House estate near Hatton of Fintray. Hillclimbs are one of the oldest forms of motorsport, where drivers tackle uphill courses one by one against the clock with the winner being the quickest. Many of motorsport's finest like Sir Jackie Stewart started their competitive racing days at sprints and hillclimbs. The 1960s was an exciting era in British motor racing when Jim Clark and Graham Hill et al were scooping up trophies and titles galore. But back in Aberdeenshire, a new motorsport event was gearing up to launch. The Aberdeen and District Motor Club got recognition of their course on the old Fintray House policies as an authorised speed circuit. The relatively short 620-yard (567m) hill was only the third RAC-recognised hillclimb in Scotland. But it wasn't about the length. The track lead into a long right-hander where the climb began, followed by a left-hander which almost without warning turned into a 180 hairpin bend. With no camber, the track then followed a short straight before terminating in a hairpin right and sprint to the finish. The first official event was held on August 1 1965 in glorious sunshine and was opened by Scottish hillclimb champion Rae Fielding. A total of 68 competitors from motor clubs across Scotland took part in front of a crowd of more than 2000 spectators. Notable entrants that weekend included Aberdeen racing driver Willie Forbes who drove his Elva BMW, setting the fastest time of the day at 30.6 secs. He pipped Rae Fielding to victory when the latter had transmission trouble while competing. But hillclimbs weren't just the preserve of men, they attracted women too – and even husband and wife teams. At the inaugural Fintray Hillclimb, Fraserburgh entrants Jimmy Adams and Margaret Jack both competed in a 1275cc Cooper S. Jimmy was only six-tenths of a second behind winner of his class with a time of 38.2 secs, while Margaret took fourth place with 41.4 secs. The hillclimb's debut was so successful that the second event on September 26 1965 attracted 78 competitors across nine classes. Drivers came from across Scotland for the second round, which counted towards the Scottish speed championships. Competitors included super husband and wife duo Agnes and Gray Mickel. Both were well-known hillclimb enthusiasts and competed in many single-seater races throughout the 1960s and '70s in their 2.5l Cooper racer. Talented Agnes, from Glasgow, routinely raced (and won) against men in sprints, hillclimbs and rallies. Miss G Stewart of Paisley, a regular at Crimond sprint, also competed in the saloon class in her red Sunbeam Alpine. The hillclimb has continued to run at Fintray since the 1960s and remains the sort of event that lets spectators get close to the action. Grampian Automobile Club (GAC) established in the 1990s to keep the Fintray Hillclimb going, being the only event of its kind left in the north-east of Scotland. GAC hosted their first hillclimb May 1995 and has continued to run four events a year over two weekends ever since. When the cars aren't on the track, they're accessible in the pits for enthusiasts to admire and photograph. Safety features and the types of cars competing may have changed over the years, but the spirit of the original hillclimb is still very much alive and thriving in Aberdeenshire.

Japan's exports log biggest drop in 4 years as US tariff impacts intensify

TOKYO, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Japan's exports posted the biggest monthly drop in about four years in July, government data showed on Wednesday, as the impact of U.S. tariffs intensified, raising concerns about the outlook for the export-reliant economy. Total exports from the world's fourth-largest economy dropped 2.6% year-on-year in July in value terms, the biggest monthly drop since February 2021, when exports fell 4.5%. It was larger than a median market forecast for a 2.1% decrease and marks a third straight month of decline after a 0.5% drop in June. Despite the plunge in the value of exports, shipment volumes have so far held up as Japanese exporters have avoided major price hikes, said Takeshi Minami, chief economist at Norinchukin Research Institute. "But they would eventually have to pass on costs to U.S. consumers and that would further hamper sales in the coming months," he said. Exports to the United States in July fell 10.1% from a year earlier, with automobiles slumping 28.4% and automotive components down 17.4%. However, automobile exports fell just 3.2% in volume terms, suggesting Japanese automakers' price cuts and efforts to absorb additional tariffs have partly shielded shipments. The United States imposed 25% tariffs on automobiles and auto parts in April and threatened 25% levies on most of Japan's other goods. It later struck a trade deal on July 23 that lowered tariffs to 15% in exchange for a U.S.-bound $550 billion Japanese investment package. The agreed tariff rate on automobiles, Japan's largest export sector, is still far higher than the original 2.5%, exerting pressure on major automakers and parts suppliers. Exports to other regions were also weak. Those to China were down 3.5%, the data showed. Total imports in July dropped 7.5% from a year earlier, compared with market forecasts for a 10.4% fall. As a result, Japan ran a deficit of 117.5 billion yen ($795.4 million) in July, compared with a forecast of a 196.2 billion yen surplus. The outcome follows unexpectedly strong growth in gross domestic product (GDP) in the April-June quarter, separate data showed last week, fuelled by surprisingly resilient exports and capital expenditure. Economists said the strong exports growth in GDP data reflected differences in how the impact of price changes is factored in. Nevertheless, Norinchukin's Minami said that the Japanese economy has so far avoided the worst. "As the tariff deal has at least reduced uncertainties, the Bank of Japan is likely to resume rate hikes as early as in October," he said. ($1 = 147.7200 yen)
