Punchestown Festival day 5 tips: Robbie Power's selections for Saturday

Punchestown Festival day 5 tips: Robbie Power's selections for Saturday

After a cracking few days of action at the Punchestown Festival, the curtain comes down on the National Hunt season at the Co Kildare venue today.
The SBK Irish EBF Mares Champion Hurdle at 3.42 is the feature race and looks a good opportunity for Brighterdaysahead to return to winning ways in the absence of Lossiemouth after she was well beaten when finishing fourth in the Champion Hurdle.
She's got to leave that below par run at Cheltenham well behind her. That was definitely well below what she is capable of and that performance wouldn't even be good enough to win this race.
At the price she is, I'd be trying to avoid her and take her on with Jade De Grugy, who was second to Lossiemouth in the Mares' Hurdle at Cheltenham, and I think she has a good chance here against the favourite.
The Oaklodgelandscapes.ie Handicap Chase at 3.05 is wide open.
Gordon Elliott does well with his staying chasers. Fortunedefortunata won a Grand National trial at this venue back in February before finishing fifth in the Midlands National at Uttoxeter a few weeks later.
The ground drying out would be a big concern for him, but one I think has a good each way chance is Tom Gibney's Meyo, who is down towards the bottom of the handicap.
He was third at Down Royal on his last start and looks capable of running into a place again under Mike O'Connor.
JP McManus has three interesting runners in the Palmerstown House Estate Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase at 4.15.
The target for Canal End had been the Irish Grand National, but he didn't quite make the cut to get in and I'd have huge respect for him with Mark Walsh on his back for Peter Fahey.
But Majestic Force is the one I'm siding with to win for Henry de Bromhead and Rachael Blackmore.
She was a good winner when stepping up to three miles at Wexford in a beginners chase on her last start and in her first start this season in Cork she was second when beaten half a length by Spindleberry.
We've seen what Spindleberry has gone on to do and off a mark of 126 I think she will be very competitive.
The Ballymore Champion Four Year Old Hurdle at 4.50 is a fantastic renewal.

Willie Mullins is responsible for nine of the 12 runners and I'm going to take him on with Lulamba, who I thought was robbed by Poniros in Cheltenham.
I think he can get compensation here for that narrow defeat for Nicky Henderson, with James Bowen replacing Nico de Boinville in the saddle.
D Art D Art is one who is probably open to improvement in the Lawlor's Of Naas Handicap Hurdle at 5.25, but dropping back in trip would be a slight concern.
Wellington Arch is the one I like here for Jonjo & A J O'Neill, who won a handicap chase at this venue on Thursday with Petit Tonnerre.
Wellington Arch won a handicap hurdle at Aintree last month when beating Kopeck De Mee. That is strong form and he sneaks in towards the bottom of the handicap with a weight of 10-6 and I think he has a great chance.
The DAR Golf Construction (Pro/Am) INH Flat Race at 6.00 is a very interesting bumper and all eyes will be on Quantum Boy for Willie and Patrick Mullins in the colours of JP McManus.
He won a point-to-point by 40 lengths when trained by Jonathan Fogarty before changing hands and that was very impressive.
It will be interesting to see what he does on his racecourse debut.
Bet of the day - Lulamba - 4.50

'The best news' - Stephen Bradley proud as son Josh declared cancer free

Irish football's biggest hero of the week is undoubtedly Josh Bradley. The 11-year-old – son of Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen – got to 'ring the bell' at Crumlin Children's Hospital three years on from his devastating cancer diagnosis. Best wishes to Stephen, his wife Emma and three years has been abundant since the crushing news was revealed in 2022. 'Josh doesn't have to get chemotherapy anymore, so to get that news last week was the best news we've had in three and a half years,' proud Dad Stephen told the Irish Mirror before the team's charter flight left for the Azores on Wednesday. 'Yesterday, we went into the hospital as a family. 'All the nurses and all the nurses and doctors that looked after him for the last three and a half years were there because they're incredible." Bradley spoke of the ordeal endured by the family, outlining the guilt he sometimes felt returning to his job on the frontline of Irish management. 'One of the lowest points I've ever had was being away, maybe a week after he got diagnosed,' he said about a trip to Bulgaria. 'I didn't feel right at that moment in time, didn't feel like I should have been where I was. 'Now, you have the other extreme where we rang the bell yesterday and we're going away in the playoff game to possibly get through to the league stages. It doesn't get much better than that.'

Brother of tragic boxer John Cooney on running half-marathon for organ donation

The brother of boxer John Cooney, who tragically died after being injured in a fight, is running a half-marathon and raising funds for charity to 'make him proud'. The 28-year-old boxer from Galway died in February of this year, a week after a bout against Nathan Howells at Ulster Hall, Belfast. He suffered an intracranial haemorrhage and sadly didn't make it. His family were devastated by the loss, but found solace in the fact that John was able to donate five of his organs. The boxer's brother Aaron Cooney told the Irish Mirror: 'We were able to donate all of his organs due to it being a brain injury. 'Being able to do that showed us as a family what it is like to be able to give someone a second chance at life. It truly is a wonderful feeling. So I knew I'd love to do something to raise money for organ donation.' The 22-year-old will run the Belfast half-marathon on September 21 with his pals. They are doing it in honour of John and are raising funds for the Strange Boat Organ Foundation. The charity aims to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation and offers support to donor families and loved ones. Aaron continued: 'When my brother passed away a big life goal of his was to run a marathon, but with being a professional boxer it was hard to find the time to do the training while doing such a large sport and event. 'So when he passed I knew I wanted to do something big to commemorate his memory. The Strange Boat Foundation is based in Galway and has a commemorative park in Salthill, which is one of my brother's favourite places. 'He used to go for a lot of runs on the promenade and they have a little park dedicated to people who have passed away and donated their organs. It's a beautiful and peaceful park. 'At the moment, we are trying to get a bench for John in there. So when I found I could do the fundraiser for that charity, I knew it was the right direction.' Aaron has set up an online fundraiser on GoFundMe, and as of Tuesday €600 of his €1.6k target has been raised. His family are passionate about raising awareness for organ donation, as it gave them 'a positive in so many negatives'. He added: 'We knew that five people were given the chance at a second go at life and a healthy life. We always said whoever got his heart was going to live forever because it was such a strong beating heart. "Knowing that part of his body is living on helping other people gives us a lot of peace. We got a letter saying his heart went to a 45-year-old man, one of his kidneys to a young girl.' It will be the 22-year-old's first half-marathon, and he will be thinking about his older and dearly missed brother for the 21.1km. While John is remembered by many for his determination in the ring, his little brother says he was so caring and kind to everyone he met. Aaron said: 'The main thing is how hardworking he is. What a lot of people don't know is that while he was a pro boxer he was also working four days a week in a barber shop in Galway city and he owned his own barber shop while trying to create his pro career. 'There was always one thing people said- whenever they got their haircut that no matter how deep into his training he was and how tired he was, he was still the same really nice, caring person and always wanted the best for everyone. 'I try to live in a way that would make him proud.' Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here.
