Ireland take pride in two-goal loss to European champions: ‘I'm so proud of our defensive effort'

Although the world number one's ran out 2-0 winners with goals from Joosje Burg and Yibbi Jansen, Hawkshaw was proud of the team's performance in the opening game of the EuroHockey Championship.
The skipper said: 'The Dutch are the best in the world, and they're the best in the world for a reason. But I am just so proud of the team for the defensive effort. To run down so many penalty corner attacks from one of the World's best dragflickers, I'm just so proud.'
Ireland now face France at 2.45pm on Monday in their second game of the tournament.
Hawkshaw said: 'We approach that game no different to any other. We have a solid defence and we want to maintain that. We want to get more out of opportunities on the ball, be more patient and build in attack, and grow into the game a little bit more.'

Wissa left the Bees' Portuguese pre-season camp after Toon's bid and threatened to never play for them again before talks with boss Andrews led to him returning to training. However, last season's 19-goal ace will play no part of their Prem opener and could miss the rest of the month until the window shuts or he gets his wish and heads to St. James'. Andrews, ahead of his first competitive game since replacing Thomas Frank, said: 'I have made a decision he is not [available]. "It has been a very disrupted pre-season - I think you're aware of that interest in Yoane. '[I'm] very clear on the situation. "As a head coach, I want Yoane in the building, to be a part of the first-team and the squad. "I see that moving forwards but I am very understanding of his situation. 'I have a very good relationship with him, and that will persist, but we have to focus on the players who are ready to play and perform on Sunday and I don't think Yoane's in that space. Brentford have lost Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United, Christian Norgaard to Arsenal and keeper Mark Flekken to Bayer Leverkusen this summer but have brought in England midfielder Jordan Henderson, goalie Caoimhin Kelleher and Dutch attacking midfielder Antoni Milambo. Mbeumo completes Man Utd move But Andrews claims despite the upheaval, it is only the current Wissa problem that has caused him any headaches. He added: 'The only one who really disrupts an ideal preparation is the Yoane Wissa situation. Is it ideal? No, it's not. Would the players like him to be part of the squad? Of course they would.' 5 5 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

‘He was everyone's dad' – Legendary horse trainer Bill Turner dead aged 78 after fracturing skull in ‘freak accident'

He will leave a huge hole in the sport Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LEGENDARY horse trainer Bill Turner has died aged 78 - with his devastated daughter saying: "He was everyone's dad." The famed handler passed away on Thursday morning - two days after fracturing his skull in an awful riding accident. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Beloved horse trainer Bill Turner has died aged 78 - two days after fracturing his skull in a 'freak accident' at his Dorset base Credit: Daughter Kathy confirmed his sad death live on Sky Sports Racing in an understandably emotional interview with Sun Racing's Matt Chapman, who said: "Everyone in racing will miss him." She described the incident with a young cob horse as a 'freak accident', saying: "I can't get round this injury doing this to him. "I've pulled him out from under horses, he's been up on roofs just last Sunday - that was him, you'd never change him. "Dad passed away about an hour and a half ago - we had the phone call while on the way to Chepstow races. "He slipped away this morning. "The messages and the support from everyone have just been absolutely outstanding. "I've tried to reply to as many people as I could but I'm so sorry if I haven't replied. "The love that man had - he wasn't just my dad, he was everyone's dad. "The people he helped all through his years. He was everyone's dad. "He would have preferred to be going flat out up the gallops with something like this. "But it was just a freak accident. He was holding onto a cob, not on top of a racehorse going flat out, which he thoroughly enjoyed." As recently as 18 months ago Turner said he was still riding out three lots a day - something he loved to do. Recalling his passion for racing and horses, he said how his late father would tell him: "Don't retire, because there are two chairs that will kill you – the electric chair and the armchair!" Turner, who was born in 1947 in the Shropshire village of Clun, has won the Brocklesby at Doncaster - the first big two-year-old race of the season - a record six times. A trainer for decades and jockey before that, he has two Listed victories to his name as well - and has never been afraid to try new things. One of the most bizarre was when he started training a zebra called Zebedee to run like a thoroughbred. Bought from a Dutch game reserve for £4,500 in 2009, Turner ultimately wanted to get the horse over jumps. But he had to settle for riding round his Sherborne base - much to the amusement of drinkers down the local who thought they had had a few too many when they saw him cantering past. Turner, who was described by the local newspaper as 'bonkers', said at the time: "I had always wanted to see if I could train a zebra like a horse and had tried for years to get one. "Then a friend in Belgium who knew I wanted one managed to find one and I brought him over. "He is only half grown and we've only been training him for a few weeks but it is going very well. "At first I thought I had bitten off more than I could chew because he saw everything as a predator. "I ride him with a saddle and I take him out to the village and the first time I did it a few people outside the pub ran back in thinking their beer was a bit strong." Turner's most successful year as a trainer came in 2012 when he saddled 29 winners and won just shy of £100,000 in prize money. He smashed the six-figure ceiling several times, including in 2006 when The Lord gave him the first of his two Listed wins with victory in the Achilles Stakes at Goodwood. More to follow.

Liverpool vs Bournemouth preview, team news and predicted lineup

Premier League holders Liverpool welcome Bournemouth in the new season's curtain raiser at Anfield as the Reds look to start their title defence strongly The Premier League season kicks off with holders Liverpool welcoming Bournemouth to Anfield on Friday night. The Reds will be looking move on from their Community Shield disappointment while the Cherries will be eager to test themselves against this season's favourites. Arne Slot got off to a superb start to life in Liverpool when he secured the club's 20th league title in their history last season at the first attempt since taking over from Jurgen Klopp last summer. Now the Dutch manager will be looking to add more silverware having lost to PSG in the Champions League, suffered a huge cupset at Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup and losing to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final last season too. The Reds have invested heavily this summer with the arrivals of Florian Wirtz for a record-breaking transfer fee alongside fellow Bayer Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong as well as Hugo Ekitke and Milos Kerkez to bolster the team's squad depth. The main question mark still remains in Liverpool's team will be who will spearhead the hosts attacking line-up as Alexander Isak's proposed transfer to Merseyside continues to be speculated ahead of the new season. Liverpool vs Bournemouth Ryan Gravenberch will have to wait another week to kick off his league campaign. The Dutch midfielder, who missed the Community Shield after the birth of his child, is suspended following his red card against Crystal Palace on the final day of last season. He could be one of up to three absentees for the hosts. Joe Gomez is almost certain to miss out as he continues to manage an Achilles issue, while Conor Bradley has a muscular problem and remains a doubt. Those uncertainties push selection focus onto midfield and full back. Curtis Jones stepped in at Wembley and produced a spotless passing display, completing 53 out of 53 passes to set a Community Shield benchmark. Even so, with fitness restored, Alexis Mac Allister is expected to operate at the base of midfield, offering control on the ball and bite without it. Andoni Iraola's side also have a busy treatment room. Enes Unal and Lewis Cook are working back from knee injuries. Ryan Christie (groin), Luis Sinisterra (thigh) and Justin Kluivert (calf) are at different stages of recovery. Sinisterra is trending towards involvement on Friday, Cook is due to rejoin team training but is not guaranteed to feature, and Kluivert is highly unlikely to play due to unforeseen "issues" with his rehabilitation. There is better news for the Cherries in attack. Antoine Semenyo, fresh from signing a new contract, is available and offers direct running and pressing from the front. Between the posts, former Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic is set for his Premier League bow in Bournemouth colours.
