SC sets up panel led by ex-HC judge for Banke Bihari temple
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi also gave green signal to the Uttar Pradesh govt to proceed with the acquisition of land around the temple required for developing a corridor on the lines of the one built for the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi.
Without expressing any opinion on the legality of the state's ordinance for developing the temple and its surrounding as well as building the corridor by taking Rs 200 crore from the temple fund, the bench said it is for the Allahabad HC to decide the validity of the ordinance.
It requested the HC to decide the constitutionality of the ordinance within one year of fresh writ petitions filed against it.
Rejecting applications filed by pujaris and other interested persons objecting to suggestions for improving the temple functioning, the bench said, "We see absolutely no merit in these objections, at this stage, especially when we have granted liberty to challenge the ordinance before the HC."

After India suspended the Indus Water Treaty on April 23 in response to the gruesome Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian-registered aircraft. However, according to a local media report, Islamabad has suffered massive financial losses after the shutdown as the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) lost over Rs. 1,240 crore (PKR 4.1 billion) in over two months. According to ANI, Dawn reported the figure of losses, citing a statement by the Pakistan Ministry of Defence in the National Assembly on Friday. Furthermore, as per the report, the closure came into effect from April 24, when Islamabad withdrew overflight permission for all Indian-registered aircraft and those operated, owned, or leased by Indian carriers. The closure of airspace has backfired on the Pakistani economy. According to the Dawn, the revenue of PAA from overflying charges plunged between April 24 and June 30, nearly affecting 100-150 Indian aircraft daily and slashing Pakistan's transit air traffic by almost 20 percent. Meanwhile, the officials also claimed that the measures issued by Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) were for "strategic and diplomatic" reasons. According to the ministry's data, PAA's average daily overflight revenue in 2019 was 508,000 dollars, compared to 760,000 dollars in 2025, meaning the ban is costing Pakistan far more now than during the previous standoff, Dawn reported. Pakistan Airspace Closure Pakistan's airspace is open to all except Indian airlines and aircraft, and the ban has been extended twice and is now set to last until the last week of August. Furthermore, Indian carriers continue unaffected on other international routes, while Pakistani airlines are still barred from entering Indian airspace. Udaipur Files producer says he is receiving death threats after film's release
A day after Udaipur Files was released in theatres across India, producer Amit Jani claimed that he has been receiving 'death threats' over the film. In a X post on Saturday, Jani stated that he has been getting repeated calls from an unknown number, with the caller threatening to kill him with a bomb or shoot him. Jani added that the caller introduced himself as Tabrez, a resident of Bihar. In his post, Jani urged the authorities to register a case against Tabrez and arrest him. Last month, the Central government granted 'Y'-category armed security cover to the Udaipur Files producer in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. It came days after the Supreme Court allowed the producer to approach the police and seek protection as he alleged a threat to his life. Y-category security includes a detail of 8 to 11 personnel, including commandos, to protect the individual around the clock. Udaipur Files was released across India on Friday, August 8, after the Delhi High Court on Thursday gave the go-ahead for its release. It was initially slated for release on July 11, but faced many delays due to censorship and legal troubles. The Supreme Court had directed the Delhi High Court to address challenges against the government's approval of the film's release. Udaipur Files is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor, who was brutally killed in broad daylight in his shop in Udaipur, Rajasthan, by two men for allegedly sharing a social media post in support of former BJP member Nupur Sharma following her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed during a debate show on a private news channel. According to police reports from 2022, the prime accused, Mohammad Riaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammad, entered Lal's shop pretending to get clothes stitched before attacking him with a knife and slitting his throat. They recorded the brutal murder and circulated the video on social media, claiming responsibility for the heinous act, which triggered national outrage and raised serious concerns about radicalisation and communal violence. The accused were booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, besides provisions under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Initially, the case was probed by the Rajasthan police, but later the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over it. The trial is pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur. No Bihar voter to be removed from rolls without notice: Poll body to top court
The Election Commission has filed a fresh affidavit in the Supreme Court regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, stating that no names will be deleted from the list without prior notice to the individual and an opportunity to be heard. The poll body assured that it will strictly adhere to the principles of natural justice in the a matter of policy and in strict adherence to the principles of natural justice, no deletion of any elector's name from the draft electoral roll, published on 1st August 2025, shall be undertaken without issuance of a prior notice to the concerned elector indicating the proposed deletion and the grounds thereof, affording a reasonable opportunity of being heard and furnishing relevant documents, and passing of a reasoned and speaking order by the competent authority," the commission said in its electoral roll revision has run into legal trouble, with the Opposition alleging that the process, undertaken ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections, could disenfranchise lakhs of genuine voters, particularly from marginalised communities, by imposing stringent and arbitrary documentation requirements. To ensure that no temporary migrant from Bihar is excluded, advertisements in Hindi were issued in 246 newspapers...
