Solar-powered coal mining gets a push
The Parsa East and Kanta Basan (PEKB) coal mine, operated by the Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd in Ambikapur district, about 330 km north of Raipur, has taken a significant step towards 'sustainable' mining with the operationalisation of a 9-MW solar power plant. This is the first direct application of renewable energy in India's coal mining sector. PEKB is a crucial source of coal for electricity generation for nearly 80 million consumers in Rajasthan. Developed by Mundra Solar PV Limited, the 9-MW solar facility established within the mine premises is expected to reduce nearly 400,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over next 25 years.
Bastar to host Central Zonal Council meet
The 25th meeting of the Central Zonal Council, held in Varanasi, declared Bastar as the next venue of the panel's session. This marks a significant stride in integrating India's remote and sensitive regions into the 'national development' discourse. Hosting such a high-level policy forum in Bastar stands as a powerful symbol of the inclusive and transformative governance, a government statement said. 'It is hoped that by the time the next Council convenes, Bastar would have witnessed decisive progress in the ongoing battle against left-wing extremism. The Bastar is set to redefine its identity not as a region of possibilities rather than conflict.'
Hindi to replace Urdu, Persian in police records
Chhattisgarh is set to replace Urdu and Persian words used in official records of the police department with Hindi terms. A list of 109 words have been provided with their Hindi alternatives, suggested to be used in place of the old words with an intent to simplify the vocabulary. The government cited Hindi as a 'convenient language' to understand, saying this will make policing communicative, accessible and transparent. On a directive by the state home department, the DGP has issued a letter to all district police chiefs asking them to change traditional Urdu and Persian words that were in use in police functioning with 'simpler' Hindi words.

‘Oppn sad that India progressing': Kangana Ranaut says vote theft charges are ‘tamasha'

BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Monday attacked the opposition, saying that the Congress-led INDIA bloc 'is sad as the country is progressing'. BJP MP Kangana Ranaut accused the opposition of indulging in corruption when they were in power.(PTI) Calling the opposition protest in the parliament over voter list revision in Bihar and alleged theft of votes 'tamasha (drama)', the Mandi MP said that the Election Commission reprimanded Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, for 'dishonouring the voters'. "Despite such reprimanding, they (the INDIA bloc MPs) did drama here today,' Ranaut was quoted by ANI as saying. Kangana Ranaut also accused the opposition of indulging in corruption when they were in power. 'So, you can understand that if they don't get power, they would not let any work be done. When they had the opportunity, they did corruption. Now, when the country is progressing, they are sad. So, the public is watching this, and that is the reason they won't be able to win any election," she said, speaking in Hindi. INDIA bloc planning impeachment motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar The Opposition INDIA bloc is planning to move an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, escalating its confrontation with the EC days after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the poll body of large-scale voter fraud. The move comes after Gandhi alleged 'vote chori' (vote theft) in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana, accusing the Commission of manipulating voter data to favour the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On August 7, he claimed that 1,00,250 'stolen' votes in the Mahadevapura assembly segment of Bangalore Central enabled the BJP's Lok Sabha victory, accusing the ECI of 'colluding' with the ruling party. Under Article 324(5) of the Constitution, the CEC can only be removed in the same manner as a Supreme Court judge, requiring a motion of impeachment by Parliament.

'Who was consulted?': Actor Prakash Belavadi tears into Bengaluru's tunnel road project in viral video

A video of senior actor and civic activist Prakash Belavadi sharply criticising Bengaluru's proposed tunnel road project has gone viral, striking a chord with many citizens concerned about the city's infrastructure priorities. In the video, Belavadi questions the very basis of the ₹ 19,000 crore underground road proposal. (X/@AapathBandhava) In the video, Belavadi questions the very basis of the ' ₹19,000 crore' underground road proposal. 'Who do you think you're accountable to? You've been entrusted with the power to serve the people's interests, not your own agenda,' he says, addressing the government. (Also Read: 'She got it all wrong': Kannadigas slam stand-up comic Aiyyo Shraddha over 'Mile Sur' satire on Hindi imposition) Watch the video here: He points to the long-delayed Pink Line of Namma Metro as an example of poor project delivery, noting that although it began in 2017, parts of it are still incomplete. 'Now you're proposing a 17.5 km tunnel and claiming you'll finish it in two years? Do you really have the capacity?' he asks. Belavadi also raises practical and financial concerns, questioning whether sufficient soil testing has been done and how rainwater will be managed inside the tunnel. He warns of the dangers of breakdowns in enclosed spaces and criticises the imposition of tolls that could make commuting unaffordable. 'If it costs ₹400 or ₹500 just to cross the city, who is this tunnel really for?' he says. 'If you can't go by bus, by scooter, or even by car, does that mean only car owners matter in this country?' (Also Read: Bengaluru's illegal buildings make up 70%, says DK Shivakumar after fire kills 5 in Nagarathpete) Calling the project elitist and unnecessary, he says the funds would be better spent finishing existing infrastructure instead of building a tunnel that benefits a small section of society. 'If you really believe this is a good idea, hold a free and open public consultation. If you ignore people again, we'll pray, if not to the people, then to the universe, that you never come back to power,' he concludes. The video comes at a time when the Karnataka government has approved the construction of twin underground tunnel corridors under a BOOT model. The estimated cost of the project ranges from ₹17,698 crore to ₹18,500 crore. The tunnels will run from Hebbal to Central Silk Board and from KR Puram to Mysuru Road, and will be tolled. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is expected to issue a global tender soon. While the government argues the tunnels will reduce surface congestion, urban experts and opposition leaders have flagged concerns around safety, environmental impact, affordability, and equity. Critics say the tunnels would serve only a fraction of Bengaluru's population while drawing funds away from more inclusive transport systems like the metro. Kejriwal slams BJP govt after fresh bomb threats to 3 Delhi schools

'Several schools in Dwarka, including Delhi Public School, Dwarka, once again received bomb threats today. Schools in Delhi keep receiving such threats repeatedly, but to date no one has been caught and no action has been taken,' Kejriwal said in a post in Hindi on X. The threats were sent via e-mail to the Delhi Public School, the Modern Convent School, and the Shri Ram World School – all in the Dwarka area – triggering panic among students and prompting evacuation of the premises. New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday lashed out at the BJP, saying its 'four-engine' government has failed to maintain law and order after three schools in the national capital received bomb threats. 'The BJP can neither manage Delhi nor maintain the law and order. The BJP's so-called 'four-engine government' has completely failed in Delhi,' he added. Senior AAP leader Atishi echoed similar views and said children and parents are living in fear. 'The series of threats to schools is not stopping. Once again, schools in Delhi have received bomb threats. What exactly is the Delhi Police doing? Children and parents are living in fear, but the BJP's so-called four-engine government has failed to provide them security,' she said on X. AAP leaders use the 'four-engine' term to refer to the BJP being at the helm at the Centre, in Delhi, in the MCD, and also 'controlling' the lieutenant governor's office.
