Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing attack on the Yunus government and said that those who 'habitually threaten' India on the 'chicken neck corridor', should note that Bangladesh has two such narrow strips of land which are 'far more vulnerable'.
Sarma in a post on X said, 'To those who habitually threaten India on the 'Chicken Neck Corridor', should note these facts as well: Bangladesh has two of its own 'chicken necks'. Both are far more vulnerable. First is the 80 km North Bangladesh Corridor- from Dakhin Dinajpur to South West Garo Hills. Any disruption here, can completely isolate the entire Rangpur division from rest of Bangladesh.'
'Second is the 28 km Chittagong Corridor, from South Tripura till the Bay of Bengal. This corridor, smaller than India's chicken neck, is the only link between Bangladesh's economic capital and political capital,' he also posted on X.
It is important to note that India's chicken's neck, known as the Siliguri corridor, is a narrow strip of land, measuring around 22 km-35 km in width, that connects the northeast region with the rest of India.
For the neighbouring country, disruption in one of these 'chicken necks' will cut off the link between its economic and political capitals, and disruption in the other will isolate the entire Rangpur division from the rest of the country, Sarma claimed.

India has been looking at enhancing its cooperation with the Central Asian states of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in the last few years amid China's persistent efforts to expand its influence in the region. The conclave is expected to be chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. 'India and Central Asia, in each other's 'Extended Neighbourhood', enjoy close and cordial contemporary diplomatic relations underpinned by millennia old cultural and people-to-people exchanges,' the MEA said in a statement. The first India-Central summit was held virtually in January 2022. The mechanism of India-Central Asia Dialogue, at the level of foreign ministers, have taken this relationship substantially forward, the MEA said. 'The ministers will discuss further strengthening of relations between India and Central Asian countries with particular focus on trade, connectivity, technology, and development cooperation,' it said. Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Tuesday approved USD 800 million programme to strengthen fiscal sustainability and improve public financial management in Pakistan. 'India shared deep concerns regarding the potential misuse of ADB resources, particularly in light of Pakistan's increasing defence expenditure, its declining tax-to-GDP ratio, and the lack of demonstrable progress on key macroeconomic reforms,' they said. New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI) India had vehemently opposed ADB's decision to grant USD 800 million loan to Pakistan saying the fund could be misused for increasing expenditure on its military, government sources said. Earlier in the day, the Congress in a post on X quipped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi met ADB President Masato Kanda on June 1 and three days later ADB cleared the USD 800-million loan to Pakistan. Modi government's influence did not work on the IMF earlier and Pakistan got loan last month, the post said, adding that this happened even when the conflict between India and Pakistan was going on. Government sources said India expects the ADB management to adequately ring-fence the ADB financing, to prevent any such misuse. Pakistan's poor track record of implementation stems from the military's deeply entrenched interference in economic affairs, posing risks of policy slippages and reversal of reforms as has been witnessed in the past, they said. Even when a civilian government is in power, the army continues to play an outsized role in domestic politics and extends its tentacles deep into the economy, they added. Pakistan's policy of cross-border terrorism has led to a worsening of the security situation in the region and has significantly escalated macroeconomic risks for Pakistan, which also heightens the enterprise risks for the ADB, sources said. India also highlighted that the economic fragility of the borrowing country (Pakistan) poses credit risks to the ADB too, sources added.
