Chitra Pournami fest: Arunachala Hills off limits for devotees
In a bid to prevent untoward incidents, devotees will not be allowed to climb the Arunachala Hills in Tiruvannamalai town during Chitra Pournami festival — to be celebrated on Sunday and Monday.
According to estimates, 25-30 lakh visitors are expected to visit the temple in view of the festival. Trespassing is banned at seven vulnerable locations on the hills, officials of the Forest Department, said.
'The ban will be strictly enforced. Forest teams have been deployed to prevent trespassing...,' Yogesh Kumar Darg, District Forest Officer (DFO), Tiruvannamalai, told The Hindu. Forest officials said that apart from the ban on climbing, pilgrims will not be allowed to enter the 14 km-long Girivalam Path around the hills, considering the safety of wild animals in the surrounding reserve forest — home to over 5,000 spotted deer. Such a move, they said, would also prevent accidental forest fires.
At present, the hills are divided into eastern and western parts, covering over 900 hectares. The western side, which spans 699 hectares, is a reserve forest and the eastern side, which spans 2.99 hectares, is a reserve land under the (Tamil Nadu) Forest Act, 1882. The reserve land is mainly used for tree plantation drives carried out by the Revenue Department.
Arrangements checked
Collector K. Tharpagaraj, along with Tiruvannamalai Superintendent of Police M. Sudhakar, inspected the arrangements for the festival. Among civic amenities, 20 temporary bus termini have been set up on the outskirts of the town to operate 4,533 buses. Around 165 shuttle services will be available between the termini and the town.
Traffic advisory has been issued for local residents. Those who have received special passes from the police can use cars and other vehicles within the town till 5 p.m on Sunday. Normal vehicular movement will resume at 6 a.m on May 13.
Helpline numbers — 9363622330, 9159616263 and 9498100431 —have been announced for people to contact during emergencies. Two field level hospitals, 56 medical teams and 50 ambulances, including 15 bike ambulances, have been kept ready. A total of 5,197 police personnel will be deployed during the festival.

IRCTC Tatkal ticket booking will require Aadhaar from July 1
The Indian Railways on Wednesday (June 11, 2025) announced new rules to the Tatkal ticket booking system. One of the most prominent ones among these is that Aadhaar-based identification will soon be mandatory to book railway tickets online. 'Effective from July 1, Tatkal tickets booked through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation's (IRCTC) official website and mobile app will be available only to users authenticated with Aadhaar,' a spokesperson of the Ministry of Railways said. The spokesperson also added that Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will become mandatory for all online Tatkal bookings from July 15. The Ministry has also made provisions for offline Tatkal bookings. 'Tatkal tickets booked at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and through authorised agents will require OTP authentication sent to the mobile number provided by the user at the time of booking,' the spokesperson said. This provision will also come into effect from July 15. The Indian Railways has also barred authorised ticketing agents from booking opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the respective booking windows, in order to prevent bulk bookings during the critical opening window. 'For AC classes, this restriction applies from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and for non-AC classes, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.,' the spokesperson said. Ahead of these changes, IRCTC had deactivated 2.5 crore suspect user IDs as part of a digital overhaul of its ticketing infrastructure, on June 4, 2025. 'Through the deployment of anti-bot systems and integration with a leading Content Delivery Network (CDN) service provider, the Railways has curbed unauthorised automated bookings by unscrupulous agents and improved the access of the website to the genuine users,' a senior Railway official said. '131 complaints of the suspicious users have been lodged with the cybercrime cell in the last four months.' South Western Railway to upgrade tunnel radio for safer operations on Braganza Ghats, one of India's toughest rail sections
In a significant move to boost safety and operational efficiency in one of India's most challenging railway sections, South Western Railway (SWR) is set to implement an advanced Tunnel Radio Communication System in the Castle Rock–Kulem stretch of the Braganza Ghats, located on the Karnataka-Goa border within the Western Ghats. The 26-km section cuts through the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is known for its steep 1-in-37 ruling gradient, dense forest cover, and iconic monsoon-fed Dudhsagar Falls. The line, which includes remote stations such as Caranzol, Dudhsagar, and Sonalium, serves both tourists and railway personnel. However, according to SWR officials, the lack of road access and a persistent 'radio black-out' inside the 16 tunnels on this route have long posed safety and communication challenges. Speaking to The Hindu, Manjunath Kanmadi, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of South Western Railway, said, 'We are installing a cutting-edge radio communication network that brings four separate railway communication channels — VHF, Locotrol, GSM-R and LTE-R — into every tunnel. This is being done using optical-fibre backbones, high-gain repeaters and leaky-feeder cables.' The total cost of the project is ₹12.21 crore, and it is expected to be completed by October 2025. Mr. Kanmadi explained that the system will ensure continuous communication between train drivers, guards, station masters, and control rooms, even inside the tunnels. 'This will significantly improve safety during operations in this ecologically sensitive and remote area. Maintenance teams will also be able to call for assistance instantly,' the he added. Radio system used in UK, Japan rail networks Officials say that the technology mirrors global best practices. SWR's approach is similar to those implemented in leading railway systems around the world. 'The UK's Crossrail (Elizabeth Line) has employed leaky-feeder cables and GSM-R for uninterrupted communication inside London's tunnels. In Japan, the Shinkansen network has tested LTE-R and 5G systems for ultra-fast, low-latency train control in tunnels. Metro systems such as the London Underground also use long leaky-feeder antennas to maintain consistent radio coverage. By adopting this world-class architecture, SWR is joining a group of railways using top-tier communication systems,' Mr. Kanmadi noted. The benefits of the project are that continuous radio coverage will enable quicker emergency responses in the event of a breakdown or landslip. According to officials, it will also allow better coordination between lead and banking locomotives, which is vital on the steep gradients of the ghats. Passengers will benefit from safer journeys, and staff will have a more secure and responsive working environment.
