Telangana denies PDS rice ‘illegal export'
VIJAYAWADA: In response to an article -- 'PDS rice scam uncovered in Andhra's Kakinada district' published in these columns on May 12, the Telangana State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited has clarified that there is no truth in the allegations reported.
It was alleged that PDS rice on the way to Kakinada port from Telangana was seized, which the corporation said is false and baseless.
The corporation pointed out that Telangana Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has flagged off a ship named MV Troung An on March 30 and rice millers in Telangana started delivering rice to Kakinada from February 9, 2025 onwards only.
Further elaborating, it said the paddy production in Telangana has increased tremendously, while milling and storage capacity have not increased proportionately in the state.
Hence, there was a need to explore long-term options for the regular offloading of paddy.
Given the circumstances, the Telangana government, with permission of the Central government, decided to export rice to the Philippines, which would fetch immediate revenue and also reduce the loan on the corporation, besides opening doors for the export market.

Telangana complains against Andhra Pradesh's Godavari-Banakacherla project
HYDERABAD: A day after Andhra Pradesh Irrigation officials met representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Telangana government announced it will strongly oppose the proposed Godavari–Banakacherla (G-B) project. On Monday, AP officials tried to address the Ministry of Finance's queries on the project. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Telangana Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy said the state had already lodged a formal complaint with the Centre against the project. 1.5 lakh ration cards to be weeded out
Hyderabad: Weeding out ration cards is normally fraught with political landmines for any state government that tom-toms its welfare-oriented initiatives. What if the Union government hands them a big list of ration cards that could be weeded out! The state government will only improve on the Centre's job of weeding out. The Centre, raising concerns over 'ineligible' people availing benefits through the PDS (Public Distribution System), is understood to have identified close to 1 lakh cards under which 'ineligible' people have been availing PDS benefits. That list has been sent to the state government. Armed with that list, the State Civil Supplies Department is now in combat mode to weed out all 'unused' ration cards. In remarkably quick time, the officials have identified over 1.5 lakh families which they failed to receive their share of the rationed items at least for the past six months. The Centre's list pertained to discrepancies such as persons having similar family details in rations cards issued by other States, death of the card holder, and persons obtaining ration card through fraudulent means. So, the state authorities have been directed to verify these cards. Now, the Civil Supplies officials have begun examining all cards and started making inquiries. The authorities have expedited the process, which is now in the final stages. District-level officials and mandal-level officials are conducting field investigations and recording the information online, official sources told The Hans India. It is believed that upon completion of this process, most of the cards in the list sent by the Centre are likely to be canceled due to the 'ineligibility' factor, whatever be the reason. As of now, from among the cards sanctioned by the Centre, about 80 per cent of the cards have been examined. It was found that 30 per cent of the cards pertain to 'ineligible' beneficiaries. It came to light that the beneficiaries of several of these cards have not been receiving rationed items for 6 to 12 months. This being so, the state government has approved the addition of 2 lakh new ration cards. The verification process is on and authorities aver that 'eligible' applicants would continue to receive ration cards upon scrutiny of the applications. Citizens who had applied through MeeSeva centers or public governance platforms are encouraged to track the status of their application. The government also announced that beneficiaries can collect three months' worth of subsidised rice at once in June. This move is expected to ease the burden on families and reduce congestion at ration distribution centers, the officials added.

Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly petitions committee suggests measures to curb PDS rice smuggling
Vijayawada: Assembly deputy speaker K Raghurama Krishna Raju on Tuesday suggested delinking NTR Vaidya Seva cards from white ration cards to curb smuggling of PDS rice. Raju, who is also the chairman of legislative assembly petitions committee which held deliberations in the assembly committee hall, said they will soon submit proposals to the state govt on the issue. He said linking every govt scheme to white ration cards has led to even those who do not need them obtaining these cards, resulting in the misuse of ration rice and large-scale smuggling. "Senior officials from relevant depts also agree that delinking white ration cards from the issuance of NTR Vaidya Seva cards would yield positive results. There are approximately 1.70 crore families in the state, of which around 1.48 crore have white ration cards. The state govt is spending approximately ₹5,100 crore on ration rice distribution without central assistance. Delinking of rice cards with health cards could save up to ₹2,000 crore," said Raju. He opined that redirecting these funds to education could pave the way for a brighter future for students.
