Rita Saffioti 10 Things: Can't wait to have the Matildas back in WA this winter

West Australian14-05-2025

1. What a week it's been for sport, headlined by WA UFC fighter Jack Della Maddalena's stunning win in Montreal last weekend. It's the first time a West Australian has won a UFC world title. Jack's character, work ethic and resilience in bouncing back from injury setbacks is just incredible, and we are so proud of him.
2. It was WA Labor that removed the ban on the octagon when we came into Government in 2017. UFC is a professional sport followed by millions and millions around the world. We've hosted some incredible UFC events in Perth, which attract thousands of tourists and generates valuable money for our economy. Excited to have UFC back again later this year and next.
3. Also can't wait to have the Matildas back in WA this winter to play four international friendlies against Slovenia and Panama — three at HBF Park and for the first time, one in Bunbury at Hands Oval. A great opportunity for the South West to see the Tillies in action before next year's Asian Cup.
4. Of course, the redevelopment at Hands Oval in Bunbury has meant they are now capable of hosting big sporting matches, like the AFL game between North Melbourne and the West Coast Eagles and now the Matildas. Our Government has contributed more than $13 million to the redevelopment.
5. It was a privilege to launch the new WA Institute of Sport Para Sports Unit on Tuesday. This program will support our incredible para-athletes by reducing barriers, enhancing performance pathways and ultimately driving future success at Paralympic Games, particularly Brisbane 2032. Up to 40 athletes will be supported each year. Very proud to support this initiative.
6. Across the regions, we've announced some important cost-of-living relief for families. We're delivering on our $8 million election commitment to cut costs for regional students who attend Country Week — a popular annual sports carnival in Perth between regional high schools. This will save families up to $500.
7. As Sports Minister, I'm proud of the record amount we're investing into sporting infrastructure. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent supporting new courts, ovals, change rooms, leisure centres, lighting and facilities. This is the best way to keep young people participating in sport and help talented athletes reach their full potential.
8. There has been significant growth in grassroots rugby league across the suburbs. I visited the Alkimos Tigers' home ground last week where I learned their participation has increased from 40 to 400 in just eight years. To keep young people engaged in their chosen sport as they grow older, it's important they can see the future. Having our own NRL team gives them that.
9. The Perth Bears have clearly struck a chord with many West Australians and of course original fans in North Sydney. We know many of these fans will come to Perth to support their team, meaning visitation and spend in WA. This team will help bolster the growing supporter base in our suburbs and drive more tourism outcomes.
10. Our approach to support a range of sports and events is paying dividends. We're not about a one hit wonder (like Basil Zempilas' $2 billion Commonwealth Games idea). We're about supporting a range of events, with the likes of WWE, UFC, league State of Origin, international rugby union, the Matildas and Socceroos just an example of the events coming up in the next year to cater for everyone.

V8 Supercars: Supercars sophomore Ryan Wood claims maiden win at Perth Super 440, Brodie Kostecki improves

Supercars sophomore Ryan Wood has sparked emotional celebrations with his maiden race victory as local boy Brodie Kostecki showed signs he may be able to steal his first win of the year in Perth. Australia's premier motorsport championship made a well-behaved start to the Perth Super 440 at Raceway in Wanneroo, with not a single flag flown or safety car deployed. Wood barely put a foot wrong after starting second on the grid, capturing the lead 10 laps in before fending off a roaring finish from reigning champion Will Brown in the final five laps to salute in front of the West Australian faithful. Kostecki fell two places from his third-place start but showed major improvements after only managing 18th fastest in practice on Friday, a huge boost to his hopes across the weekend. Wood made the most of the outside line off the starting grid but was outmaneuvered into the first turn as pole-sitter Chaz Mostert held onto the lead. Kostecki left too much room for championship leader Broc Feeney on the inside to slip out of the podium places off the line. It forced the Perth boy to settle in behind him, and he steadily lost time in the dirty air while also fending off Will Brown and Matt Payne as they battled behind him. Mostert's lead evaporated on lap ten of 50, Wood side-by-side with him on the inside through turn seven before making the most of a better exit to capture the lead through turn one. Feeney was the first to pull the trigger on a pit stop, taking two new tyres in an impressive 3.6-second change on lap 22 and forcing Wood to react. The move worked perfectly for Feeney, Wood's rear tyres forcing a slow stop to leave the young gun on the race leader's bumper after his rejoin. The call to leave Mostert out past the halfway mark cost the Mobil1 driver; a slow pit stop dumping him out behind Kostecki in fifth. However, it was the best possible result for the fans as Mostert and the hometown hero renewed hostilities, going bumper-to-bumper and crisscrossing into and out of turns seven and one. In the end, Mostert's new set of tyres made the difference, Kostecki unable to win his spot back a second time. Red Bull teammates Feeney and Will Brown rubbed shoulders as the race reached the pointy end. And the reigning champion was given the green light to race Feeney, grabbing second with 12 laps to go before making a run at Wood that came up narrowly short.

UFC 316: West Australian MMA star Quillan Salkilld eyes Perth bout ahead of Yanal Ashmouz fight

Quillan Salkilld has plenty of reasons not to spend too much time in the octagon when he faces off against Yanal Ashmouz at UFC 316 in New Jersey on Sunday morning. Salkilld (8-1) is coming off an impressive 19-second TKO of Anshul Jubli in his UFC debut in February, with the right cross he landed stamping himself as a lightweight to watch. But the chance to feature on the Perth card which is scheduled for later this year is one the 25-year-old is eyeing off once he gets past Ashmouz (8-1). 'That's 100 per cent the goal. I heard the rumours (of Perth being) in September, so get through this one hopefully with no injuries or anything,' Salkilld told The West Australian. 'And I get back into camp and hopefully get onto the Perth card if it comes. 'I want to get as many fight as I can and just climb the rankings. There's nothing to specific right now, the long-term goal is to get to the belt and win the UFC championship, but at the moment it's just getting wins and great performances stacked under my belt.' Ashmouz — who is known as Red Fox — is a step up for Salkilld given the Israeli's experience and power, having claimed finishes in six of his eight career wins. Salkilld said he was wary of the many weapons that the 30-year-old brought to the table. 'It's his wildness on the feet, he throws some winging shots. That's always going to be dangerous,' he said. 'He's quite an athletic guy, so I don't want any of them to land clean. And his takedown is actually really nice, he's quite sharp with the takedowns. 'As long as I stay sharp and disciplined on the feet and use my range well and scramble like hell when he shoots I think I'm going to be just fine.'
